Neighbour reported my cousin’s car as abandoned

Hi y’all . So a cousin of mine went to Spain last week and she left her car legally parked outside my house . This morning I had someone come in from our local borough to say that the car was abandoned. I was so shocked and lost for words . The lady who came in was just doing her job and I mentioned it was my cousin’s car and that she is on holiday . So I know for sure it was my neighbour who reported as she has never taken a liking to us . I am black by the way and she cannot fathom that I am a homeowner in the neighbourhood she is in and she already told other neighbours that she suspected that my husband must be 'doing something illegal to afford that house and car '. Will I be unreasonable to call the borough and ask who made the call or I should let it go ?

Where, anywhere within the OP's posts are there any actual proof of racism. All you have is that 'she thinks' she is experiencing racism based on third party gossip.

She doesn't have to prove shit to you. She lives this daily, discreet and overt racism are a part of her life. The fact that you feel she should provide you with evidence of the rascism that's been received, as the op said, wow!

You may be seeing racism where there isn't any. Most neighbours gossip. When your not there they talk about you, when she isn't there it's her turn to be talked about and so on. Don't sweat it.

Someone’s complaining about her neighbour and you’re so sure it’s not racist without knowing either of them. You should ask yourself why you’re so quick to defend the other person.

I can't see it likely that the council would give you the name of the person who reported it as abandonned. My experience of dealing with the council if it's basically an information black hole, nothing comes out.

However, if you think it's part of a racially motivated pattern of behaviour to harrass you (rather than her being a interfering cow) I would definitely ring the council to ask how they handle such problems and who you should be talking about to register your concerns. I don't know if it would be the council or non-urgent crimes unit of the police who'd be best placed to advise.

Amybelle88 · 15/10/2024 23:39

If it's racially motivated, report it.

SpiggingBelgium · 15/10/2024 23:49

My question still remains should I call the borough yes or no .

No. They won’t tell you anything, and I don’t really understand why you think they would.

stanleypops66 · 16/10/2024 00:10

If you live where your user name suggested then a malicious call to the council is very likely to be racially motivated. I would certainly call the council and get it logged that it was malicious and that you feel there may be racial element,

stanleypops66 · 16/10/2024 00:11

Then possibly the police, given how black families have been forced out of their homes there in the past few months.

FrauPaige · 16/10/2024 01:11

And perhaps a medium term relocation plan to a more affable locale if issues persist

How long are cars allowed to park on your street?

on ours they can’t be parked overnight, so a car left while someone went away for a week would definitely draw attention.

Most streets have no parking restrictions. Your street is the oddity.

Sethera · 16/10/2024 08:00

It was clearly malicious - any normal person would knock on the door and ask if you knew anything about the car parked outside your house before calling the council to report it as abandoned. I think you should flag it with the council as a malicious call, then you will have an audit trail if the neighbour tries anything else.

The person who came in had a uniform with the logo of the borough and same on the van she came in with . So I know for sure she came in from the borough .

No lanyard?

I used to do this for my boss sometimes and didn’t wear a lanyard. No one working in environmental services yard did. Lanyards were for the non uniform office workers. The head to toe uniform and work van weren’t questioned tbh I’d just take photos and if it was untaxed a letter would go on and it’d be towed after seven days if not moved.

I'd definitely contact the council and get them to note the malicious/nasty racist element that you suspect is behind the call about the abandoned car. Even if it was abandoned, it's on your private land so nothing to do with the council. It sounds as though the call that was made was exaggerated to the point that they felt they needed to follow up.

I once worked for the council in this area and we’d go out and have a look and take photos pretty much in response to every complaint. Mainly I dealt with following up flytipping, deciding whether it was council responsibility (Six feet of road mainly or on council land) , abandoned vehicles often in lay-bys, as well as delivery/ collection of bins. Your out and about anyway and it’s a quick job.

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 16/10/2024 09:13

That's great service @Lovelysummerdays nice to know that sort of thing was taken seriously and followed up.

Mylifeiswrecked · 16/10/2024 10:27

As someone who lives in Northern Ireland.

The council in Northern ireland come out and place a sticker on a car to say you have 14 days to move it or it will be seized. They do come out quickly.

Whether it was racist or not is hard to confirm but assuming the neighbour saw the person leaving the car there, taking suitcase etc out of it then they probably could tell the person didn't live in the immediate area. They presumably would also have been aware of whether they were of a different ethnicity than the person who reported it.

Northerner Ireland is much smaller than England and definitely isn't short on racists and interfering neighbours.
