Neighbour reported my cousin’s car as abandoned

Hi y’all . So a cousin of mine went to Spain last week and she left her car legally parked outside my house . This morning I had someone come in from our local borough to say that the car was abandoned. I was so shocked and lost for words . The lady who came in was just doing her job and I mentioned it was my cousin’s car and that she is on holiday . So I know for sure it was my neighbour who reported as she has never taken a liking to us . I am black by the way and she cannot fathom that I am a homeowner in the neighbourhood she is in and she already told other neighbours that she suspected that my husband must be 'doing something illegal to afford that house and car '. Will I be unreasonable to call the borough and ask who made the call or I should let it go ?

I think the point some PPs are making is that there is no way someone from the local council would carry out a home visit to check that a car which is taxed and insured and parked on a private driveway to see if it abandoned. That just wouldn't happen.

It would if the complainant didn't disclose that it was parked on a private driveway. They may have implied it was on the road.

Too many holes in this story...

OP obviously enjoys a little bit of stirring.

Edited

Too many Americanisms too.

SilenceInside · 15/10/2024 20:48

@ReadingSoManyThreads of course, you're right that the neighbour probably just lied about the location of the vehicle. Pretty stupid of her when it's so easily checked.

bergamotorange · 15/10/2024 20:48

One possible (possible, I wasn't bloody there!) joining-up of the OP's rather disjointed updates would be:
The car was outside the OP's house
The neighbour doesn't know whose car it is
The neighbour knows whose parking space it is
The neighbour reports the car but does not include the fact it is on a private space
The council responds

Would have seen that driving by no need to stop and have a chat about the car.

They'd have checked it was taxed/MOTed etc first to avoid a wasted journey though, surely?

BiscuitlyBoyle · 15/10/2024 20:49

So the car was legally parked on your property and not on the street? If it was on the street I wouldn’t think twice except to perhaps think that the neighbour was being over zealous. However, it’s parked on your property? I’m amazed that the council came out.

Yes indeed this is what my local council would do I think.

M2BANTRIM · 15/10/2024 20:50

I made the decision to post this question if I should or should not contact my borough about a report being made about a legally parked car on my property . The post was not made to make a debate about race or fake up a story out of boredom . This happened and I am asking strangers on the internet whether I should ask the borough directly why a house call was made and who reported the vehicle . That’s all I was asking but there are some people who are getting triggered and trying to gaslight me which is so uncool . You don’t have to respond if you don’t believe my story and those who offered helpful advice thank you

Things must be different in NI, certainly in my part of England there's no way the council would come out for a taxed legally parked car after any length of time

bergamotorange · 15/10/2024 20:35

Do you generally have a problem accepting that racism exists?

No. I have a problem with claims of racism with nothing at all to back it up.

Do a subject access request for details of the complaint and see what you find out.

However be aware that they have to respect the data rights of a complainant even if where a complaint is malicious.

If you feel you are being subjected to malicious behaviour, start to keep records and when you have relevant info then report any harassing behaviour.

Wellingtonspie · 15/10/2024 20:52

No because I don’t think you will get any answers. People have to be able to report genuine issues without fear of repercussions.

If you wanted to you could call state you believe it’s malicious and that it’s Susan across the road and that if they continue to get complaints via her you wish to open up a case with the police for harassment.

Also then declare such neighbour dispute if/when you sell.

PeloMom · 15/10/2024 20:53

We haven’t had issues with our neighbours (they’re British) and they did the same when my BIL parked his car for a few days in front of our house. What’s this thing w people reporting stuff that doesn’t concern them and has zero impact on them??

I am surprised you require people to 'back it up' when it is something that happens all the time.

What does this post even mean? 'British people' isn't just white people.

Wow @ATenShun you need me to back up claims of racism that I experienced ? Wow just wow .

@Pandasnacks I said British as is it something cultural and typical in Britain.

AmberAlert86 · 15/10/2024 20:57

Perhaps you could ring up council on the pretense of asking if the person that visited today was definitely a council worker? And then it can lead to enquiring if they can tell you who made the complaint as it seems so strange that someone would pay attention to the car parked in your space. Also you could explain that you have a tricky neighbour, and ask them for advice on what your next steps should be.
I hope you have CCTV, also hope your front garden and Xmas decorations are nicer than hers just to rub her nose in!

redwinechocolateandsnacks · 15/10/2024 20:57

You can only report a car as abandoned if it does not have an MOT or insurance. Also the car generally has to be abandoned on the roadside for a number of weeks.

Where, anywhere within the OP's posts are there any actual proof of racism. All you have is that 'she thinks' she is experiencing racism based on third party gossip.

NC10125 · 15/10/2024 20:58

Ignore the car issue and the comments.

But make it your life’s work to encourage other black families to move into the neighbourhood every time a house is for sale. Extra points if it’s the house right next door to hers!!!

I am surprised you require 'proof'.
This is not a court of law.
What proof would you be wanting to see on an anonymous thread? Confused

The council won’t be able to tell you, but you should tell 111 a that a suspected racially motivated malicious report has been made about you/your address - sadly these numpty knuckle draggers like to escalate things and this may be the start of a series of harassment
