To be irritated by the way M&S display their jumpers

I'm currently stocking up on winter wear so have been buying jumpers.

Looking at M&S online for cardigans this morning and came away majorly irked by their models.

All I want to see is what I'm trying to buy. I just want the model to put the cardigan on, stand up reasonably straight and be photographed from various angles.

If you tuck one half of the cardigan into your trousers it makes it ruck up so I can't see how long it is, nor how it hangs.

Same with the sleeves, if you pull them over your hands or pull them up your arms I can't see how long they are.

Don't slouch in a chair or on the floor.

Don't pull the top of the garment up around your ears, maybe you're aiming at quirky, but I'm trying to see what it looks like being worn normally. I'm not going be wearing it yanked up around my ears.

And don't hug a bloody great bag to your chest because then all I can see is the bloody great bag.

Just needed to get that off my chest.

This is why you should actually visit the shops.

Our M&S doesn't have the stock - unless you want a beige anorak with novelty trims over a micro mini and a crispy cropped jumper with slogans on. No tights, mind, clearly nobody wants those when they can have the above.

God yes! I was looking at coats earlier and not one of them was on a model. Just photographed flat. What the hell does it look like on? No idea.

pigsDOfly · 18/10/2024 12:04

Sorry I haven't been back for a while. Wasn't able to get online yesterday.

BruceAndNosh Thank you for that photo. Absolutely does nail it, especially with that nasty bit of rag on her head😂

Who wouldn't feel the epitome of stylish in that get up.

Anyway, the two cardigans I ordered came this morning and as they look really horrible on me, they'll be going back.

And no, there's no point in visiting the nearest store. As NeverDropYourMooncup says, they have no stock. I was there last week looking to buy jumpers and there was nothing, it's all online.

I was in MnS with DH a few months ago, and was browsing. When I went back to him he was straightening the clothes on the mannequins, as someone had pulled one side of the tops out, leaving one side tucked in. He thought he was doing the staff a favour. He tidies the shelves in Aldi too. I might start going shopping on my own, but that is probably his plan.

Looks like a still from Oliver Twist.

Petrine · 18/10/2024 12:23

I agree. I hate the stupid poses M&S have online with models splaying their legs apart… coupled with descriptions of the clothes which are totally inaccurate - so ‘column dress’ when it’s clearly flared, ‘pleated’ when it’s gathered, ‘waisted’ when it’s empire line, etc, etc. Oh and the surly aggressive looking models.

Please send your DH round to me immediately @Lincslady53 .
There is much tidying of shelves to be done at wingedharpy towers.😉

I can put up with the weird stance poses if they'd just give me the crucial measurements ie. Width from pit to pit, length of garment from back neck to hem and sleeve length from pit to cuff.
I'm sure they'd get fewer returns if they did this.

Evilartsgrad · 18/10/2024 12:42

pigsDOfly · 15/10/2024 16:23

See, that's exactly what I want. Just some straightforward photos of what's on offer.

And the better sellers will give measurements, idea of fit etc

I agree that some shops have awful photos (especially Zara) which is why I do most of my shopping in person.

However I’ll have to disagree with you about M&S - just looked at their cardigans now and I can see how long every single one is, how it hangs, the shape etc. They also all have a pic of the item without the model in it which helps. What more do you need?!

Well not that awful cardi for a start! I'm only 63...

MilesOfCarpetTiles · 18/10/2024 12:57

I have a really specific bugbear that is pretty rare - long hair on the models obscuring the neckline of a top/dress. Usually you can see it in at least one picture but I've definitely come across ones where you never see the full thing.

Also: Vinted sellers who never have a photo of the whole thing. The top bit on a hanger, the bottom hem.

MilesOfCarpetTiles · 18/10/2024 12:59

StormingNorman · 15/10/2024 21:52

This. As well as pinning the clothes to fit the models!

That used to annoy me too. If you want the clothes to look like they fit like that, design them to fit like that!

That picture isn't a good example though - it's half open/pushed over!

Sjdjb · 18/10/2024 13:27

At least M&S have moved on from styling everything with the model standing stiffly in black court shoes with every outfit. Like ripped baggy pale wash jeans and some poor woman standing there in a pair of K Shoes courts. So ugly.

What is going on with the model's feet and shoes?

We don't even have M & S shops to visit now.

The clothing M & S stores in Dorchester, Poole and Bournemouth town centre have all been closed over the last few years.

Petrine · 18/10/2024 13:58

I have quite a large store reasonably close but whenever I go I find my size (10) out of stock and only large sizes on the rails (size 18 and over).

When I can be bothered to mention it to a member of staff I’m told that it can be ordered to the store… well yes and I could order it to my home but that’s not why I came in person to the store. I want to see the item and try it on.

applestrudels · 18/10/2024 14:02

ASOS are like this and it drives me up the bloody wall! in some of the photos, the model is swinging around so much that half the dress is out of the frame of the photo.

M&S do give measurements on their website if you go into product details.

Don’t go on the Toast website.Their poor models look as though they took one too many Valium with their matcha tea. I want to do the annoying “ Cheer up love, it might never happen” thing, but I think they are too far gone.

They’re modelling the Toast customer experience - they’ve paid £200 for an ugly sack dress made of viscose. It’s block printed by some piss-poor artisan in India though, so crack a smile love!

Wasn’t it the witches in the Roald Dahl story who had feet like that? Good to know Zara is catering for customers with very specific needs!

I was in Peacocks at the weekend. Some bloody nice jumpers in there.

Areolaborealis · 18/10/2024 14:38

YANBU. Some of the photography seems a bit low effort just now (not only M&S). I shop online mostly for kids clothes and I'm surprised how many photos show the model in clothes that don't even fit properly and seem to be a size too small especially in length. The models often look utterly miserable which doesn't help sell the product to me.
