To be irritated by the way M&S display their jumpers

I'm currently stocking up on winter wear so have been buying jumpers.

Looking at M&S online for cardigans this morning and came away majorly irked by their models.

All I want to see is what I'm trying to buy. I just want the model to put the cardigan on, stand up reasonably straight and be photographed from various angles.

If you tuck one half of the cardigan into your trousers it makes it ruck up so I can't see how long it is, nor how it hangs.

Same with the sleeves, if you pull them over your hands or pull them up your arms I can't see how long they are.

Don't slouch in a chair or on the floor.

Don't pull the top of the garment up around your ears, maybe you're aiming at quirky, but I'm trying to see what it looks like being worn normally. I'm not going be wearing it yanked up around my ears.

And don't hug a bloody great bag to your chest because then all I can see is the bloody great bag.

Just needed to get that off my chest.

I find the majority of M&S jumpers are cut just too short for me, I’m average height. Plus they are so expensive for usually man made fibres.

Yeah, they're not great value for money, to be honest.

I bought a couple of lovely jumpers from Primark recently at half the price and one of those is woollen.

Probably last just as long as the M&S jumpers.

oh, and don't display them in the shop all folded up, I lost my shit in Uniqlo with that one!

I sometimes move the nicely folded things in Uniqlo a bit because I like to watch them being folded up again. 🙂

The way clothes are modelled online by M&S have been bizarre for a while now. Pretty certain I’ve seen a few models wearing large coats when they’re meant to be modelling the top underneath

And what’s with the shots of models leaping in the air and the like? 😵‍💫

Urgh all those rake thin women and soul less eyes staring at you like zombies.

Don’t go on the Toast website.Their poor models look as though they took one too many Valium with their matcha tea. I want to do the annoying “ Cheer up love, it might never happen” thing, but I think they are too far gone.

pigsDOfly · 15/10/2024 16:36

Had a quick look at the Zara website.

Those models do not look happy!

At least the M&S models look as if they're happy in their work, so I suppose that's something.

Don't get me started! It's not just M&S either, many companies use this tecnique. Always a bad sign when jumpers and other tops are tucked in or blowing back in the wind, or the model is leaning forward with her arms folded or lying down or stooping to pick something up. It means that the garment hangs badly or is an unflattering length or shape. I won't buy them any more without seeing them first.

😂

What struck me with the Zara models as well, was unhealthy they all looked.

Sad and unhealthy. Just what you need to make you want to buy their clothes.

Had a look at the Toast website, and you know what? I think the Toast models win. You're right they look completely out of it.

Although, can't say I blame them. The dresses they're wearing make them look as if they've escaped from a very depressing episode of Little House on the Prairie. And the shoes!

I was walking though the men's section of m&s the other day, and the mannequins were wearing patterned jumpers, with a second identical patterned jumper tied round their shoulders. I'm fairly sure they aren't sold in two-packs. Very strange way of modelling clothes, not sure many people are questioning what it would look like if they wore two together Confused

Ace56 · 15/10/2024 17:36

I agree that some shops have awful photos (especially Zara) which is why I do most of my shopping in person.

However I’ll have to disagree with you about M&S - just looked at their cardigans now and I can see how long every single one is, how it hangs, the shape etc. They also all have a pic of the item without the model in it which helps. What more do you need?!

If you go into Product details on the M&S website they give the back length (at least for M&S own brand items). I always check this because even when the model is showing standing upright with the jumper, etc untucked, the item may be longer on someone like me of normal height and not a 6 foot tall model.

LassoOfTruth · 15/10/2024 21:50

@Usernameno1234567 😂😂 oh wow the woman in McDonald’s. This is brilliant thanks!

They do this deliberately because the clothes are so badly manufactured.

This. As well as pinning the clothes to fit the models!

They have to pin the clothes to fit the shop dummies as they are rail thin. If they were human, you’d be worried for them.

My DM worked in M&S management in the 80s. Every single time she buys from there now she laments at the deteriorating quality of their clothes. Two sides of the cardigan not matching up etc. I think the wanky poses by the models are designed to obscure the poor quality at times!

Primark quality inflated prices.
I buy from there but I'm with your mum the current quality is poor and customer service pretty shocking in a lot of stores

NeverDropYourMooncup · 15/10/2024 22:09

But if they stood up straight, you'd see that you're being expected to pay fifty quid for something that stops three inches above your trousers in front and four inches behind, the sleeves end an inch above your watch and the hem looks like casting on was done by an over enthusiastic nine year old whilst a cat was dangling off one needle.

🤣

UtterlyOtterly · 15/10/2024 22:20

Blimey, I just had a look at the Zara website. The models all seem to be thinking "Wear Zara clothes and you can look as ill and miserable as me."

I am not a core Zara customer but nothing on that website made me want to purchase anything.

WhoStoleMySpoons · 15/10/2024 22:32

I agree, I spent ages looking for a warm cardigan on the M&S website, trying to see past the poses and half tucked in, crossed over, swung about, hidden behind a stray arm photos. What arrived in the post today is the ugliest most shapeless garment I've seen in years.

It looks ok if I hold it closed with crossed arms like the model, but that's a tad impractical in day to day life.

You've captured my thoughts in a nutshell 😂

StormingNorman · 16/10/2024 08:01

M&S cashmere was the most overrated jumper ever. I haven’t bought one in years but the sleeves were always too short. And I’m an average 5.5 and not blessed with long limbs. God only knows how they got them to fit the models in the photos.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/10/2024 08:08

I’ve got a M&S jumper on its way to me. I was puzzled and the photo was of the neck from behind and the model had her arms behind her neck.

it’s going to be hideous isn’t it. Sent a marks jumper back last week too.

Luddite26 · 16/10/2024 19:40

I ordered a large throw, a lampshade and a couple of tops and a few bits of kids. Lothes.
Today I received the throw tightly packed (fine) and a £35 top stuffed in the bag with it. Not on a hanger or in a plastic bag folded with paper. Literally screed up and stuffed in with the throw.
First world problem and all that but I'm really annoyed.

This is why you should actually visit the shops.

Pfft and be treated like shit on the shoe of the snotty staff they are managing to employ these days.
I have a catalogue of rudeness from 3 shops which I regularly use in my area.
I will say customer service in the Meadowhall Store is always good but I didn't have time to go there.
They could pack their expensive products better if they happily sell online
