Menopausal itching?

StonwEd · 14/10/2024 13:25

not really an AIBU as I know I’m not but I’m being driven mad by itching.
It’s all over my body but the worst is in “sweatier” places, pits n bits etc.
Has anyone experienced this? 111 just said to see a pharmacist which I will after work, just wondered what remedies people have found.
Or could it be something more sinister and I should actually see a Dr? Feel fine otherwise.
I’m 45 btw!

Yes! I'm peri menopausal and it's alllll over me. Particularly my eye lines. It's driving me crazy. Antihistamines that contain Loratadine stop it but they make you drowsy

Serencwtch · 14/10/2024 16:41

Eurax or lanacane creams work really well for me.

Redbushteaforme · 14/10/2024 16:56

Bear with me: Weleda nappy cream is now your friend for sweatier places. It has zinc in it, it soothes irritation, and it prevents/treats fungal infections. A little goes a long way.

I used to need antihistamines regularly to calm the itching down but very rarely need them now since starting to use the cream.

Total gamechanger for me since I started using it. I needed it everyday to start with but now only need it if itching starts, and a day or two of using the cream sorts it out again. Hope it works for you.

I had this in peri-menopause. It gets so bad it almost takes your breath away & drives you mad. Of course you should checked out to make sure there's no underlying cause.
I found that having a cool/cold shower would calm it down a bit. Also antihistamines. I take a supermarket own brand or Piriton or Piriteze. Never noticed them making me drowsy. Mine used to flare up during the night so I would imagine antihistamines that make you drowsy would have been a good thing.
Don't have your bath or shower overly hot, I found that made it worse. Now I'm 58 it's not nearly so bad. I still get a bit of itching every now & again, so I never go anywhere without them.
It's one of the symptoms that's not talked about so much and people are not always aware of it as much as hot flushes etc

Onthecarpet2002 · 14/10/2024 17:08

On the plus side I never really suffered with anything else. Never felt the need for hrt, hot flushes or anything. My friends who've had all this never had bad itching like this. Apart from the itching, menopause passed me by, I hope it's the same for you xx

I changed to Wild deodorant during peri. That absorbs excess moisture so pits and bits. Moisturising my skin has also made a huge difference, I use Cetaphil or Bioderm if I'm feeling fancy. Margaret Dabbs for itchy feet. Things settle down once you reach meno, but if you're only 45, you've a few years yet.

Oh my god my people!
I’ll try everything suggested here, it’s made me feel so normal!
Thanks for the recommendations for creams. I’d thought of antihistamines but they really affect me (happy to give a go at bedtime tomorrow though!)
Other than this and sore tits for about 3 weeks out of 4 I’m coping with peri ok I think but the itching is just unbearable 😢

The itchy feet underneath is the worse thing for me

That’s actually one bit that’s not so bad for me.
Armpits however are another fking story 🫣🫣🫣

My sil has had this a few years now. Urticaria is her diagnosis.

Barney16 · 14/10/2024 21:11

I had this until I started taking HRT. Then it stopped. If I'm late sticking on an HRT patch it starts again. It's horrible. I don't have any practical suggestions but I very much sympathise.

My lower arms suddenly itch like I’ve been bitten by thousands of mosquitoes and the only thing that helps is to use a bristle brush to scratch! The worst though is my eyes itching- it comes out of the blue and feels like acid in my eyes but I can’t scratch them and no eye drops or salt water rinses help at all. It’s so annoying

EEMAW · 14/09/2025 12:32

OMG! Just came across this thread - I’m 47 and have just started Vagifem - and I’m itching all OVER! It’s driving me mad!! I look like I have fleas! I’m scratching like a monkey!! Please tell me it gets better?! Any remedy suggestions greatly appreciated! X

I get itching in my armpits and my calves.

I’ve changed to a natural deodorant called Fussy and after about 6weeks I’m no longer itchy and I’ve been lathering my legs in cream morning and night which has helped a little, it’s so frustrating.
