For context: I'm 36, mum of three (youngest is 2.5), work four days a week.

Im also someone who needs a lot of sleep.

So... introductions over. I'm in bed for 8/8.30 and asleep 8.30-9 every night. I then get up at 5.30/6 with my toddler.

Aibu to ask your age and when you go to sleep?

Mid 40s. In bed by 9.30pm asleep by 9.35pm. Wide awake at 4am (no matter what time I go to bed).

ItTook9Years · 14/10/2024 11:51

47

Between midnight and 2am most nights. Am up between 7 and 8am on weekdays and much later at weekends.

obsessedwithfreshbread · 14/10/2024 12:02

As others have said I'm so surprised at how early some of these bedtimes are..
I'm 44 - I've barely finished life admin by 9 - if i went straight to bed I'd feel I had no time to relax and spend time with DH and DSC
Usually go to bed around midnight and up anywhere from 6-9 depending on Schedule for that day!

My daughter has activities twice a week that don’t finish till 9:30pm, and every other week my train back from work doesn’t get me home till gone 10:30pm!

What life things? Because usually a lot of my evening (especially now it's getting darker) are spent just watching TV or reading, so genuinely curious how other people fill their evenings.

I'm involved with running a couple of voluntary organisations that meet in the evenings, I watch TV with family, do household chores, read, dog walk in the summer. Just usual non-work life things. DD routinely finishes work at 8.30pm so we often eat late too.

choixduroi · 14/10/2024 12:23

48 and in the week about 12.15 get ready and asleep by 12.35, up at 7. Weekend bed at 1 at up at 9.

ItTook9Years · 14/10/2024 12:31

Work more than full time, including 2 weeks a month away from home. Doing a degree, school governor x2, I often work at night if I’ve take. Time during the day for medical appts etc. 42 phone calls to pharmacies so far this month in search of my ADHD meds.

I need days to be 27 hours, really. I try to carve out a couple of hours family TV time a week but otherwise don’t watch TV myself.

PattiSmithsPattis · 14/10/2024 12:36

Early 50s. Chronic insomnia. I never know if the sleep meds are going to work, and if they do, how long for.
So I am definitely in bed by 10, but usually nearer 9.
But I can sleep for 2 or 3 hours and then be wide awake. I absolutely hate my brain 😞

EveryKneeShallBow · 14/10/2024 12:45
  1. Bed between 9.30 and 10.30 asleep within 30 minutes. Wake naturally around 3 am usually awake for an hour or so, cup of tea, MN, then sleep again to about 6.45. More tea and daily puzzles and WhatsApp messages with friends. Get up about 8.00.

If you're youngish and going to bed at a time when a lot of people are still getting home from a long commute (8pm) or having dinner, you might want to see your dr.

Needing 11 hours sleep is not good for anyone (unless recovering from an illness.)

You might need testing for diabetes or anaemia if you need to sleep from 8.30pm.

The only people I know of who admit to going to bed by 8-9pm are radio presenters who have to be in the studio for 5am and on air by 6am.

I get the odd day when I'm absolutely wiped and in bed at 9pm but it's unusual
My netball matches are on until 9pm so I wouldn't get to play those if I went to bed so early!

RaininSummer · 14/10/2024 12:59

62 nearly and work full time. In bed by ten to read and lights off 11.30 midnight. Wake up twice in the night normally and up at 6.45am.

BusySittingDown · 14/10/2024 13:01

41, I go to bed at 9 and usually read for an hour or watch TV. I usually wake up naturally between 5-6 am. I sleep like the dead.

I'm constantly bemused by friends who complain that they don't sleep well but are up messaging on WhatsApp at midnight! Put your fucking phone down, you idiot! Blue light disrupts your sleep patterns and keeps you awake.

beamoflight · 14/10/2024 13:15

Mid 40s. Go to bed/ sleep at 11-11.30pm. Wake around 6am. My sleep quality has improved massively since starting HRT.

Alina3 · 14/10/2024 13:30

MrsLBrown · 14/10/2024 11:49

But that means you have no evening.

Are you working shifts where you need to get up very early?

If I went to bed at 8, I'd sleep for 7 hours and be awake at 3am. (And not go back to sleep.)

Edited

My child goes to bed between 6-7pm. I get up early (6am daily) and pack a lot into my days. I am pretty content with 1-2hr of an evening before bed, and then getting plenty of sleep for the next early morning. I don't really feel this 'but you don't have an evening!' thing, I'm more of a morning person.

I will happily stay out later for meals out with friends, gigs, events etc. but if I'm home with nothing else on I'll usually head to bed around 8pm. Sometimes 7pm, sometimes 9pm. If it's earlier than 8pm though I will read and chill a bit before going to sleep. Love it.

Alina3 · 14/10/2024 13:32

I find it interesting that people are judged for waking up too late (not on this thread as that's not what it's about, but it's definitely a thing!) but also judged for going to bed too early. Sleep is important, it's fundamental for many people. If you're not getting a good night's sleep you can feel shocking the next day. Sadly sleep seems to have become something that is seen as optional and getting enough of it seems a bit indulgent. It shouldn't be a surprise that we're all different with different sleep needs and health challenges and work and life patterns.

RedPony1 · 14/10/2024 13:36

Jeeez!! So many people in bed at the time i'm eating my dinner!
When do you do adult things?!!

I'm not home till 8/8:30pm and eating around 9/9:30pm every eve. Watch some TV then bed around 11/11:30 pm.
Up at 5:30am Mon - Fri and 7am at weekend.

No children, just horses and dogs!

000EverybodyLovesTheSunshine000 · 14/10/2024 13:38

48
Working full time
2 kids
10pm if possible!

Theoldwoman · 14/10/2024 13:38

54, lights always out at 9:30pm, I go to bed whenever I want to, the more I want to read, watch a show , the earlier I go.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 14/10/2024 13:39

I am 57 and go to bed around 11pm. I get up at 6am. Sometimes I stay up later to spend time with one of my young adult daughters if they are around. Or if I have work to do. I struggle to stay awake later than midnight.

Yesterdayyesterday · 14/10/2024 13:51

Bed around 11.30pm/12am. Up between 7 and 7.30am on weekdays, maybe 8 at the weekends.

Am always tired when I get up in the mornings, but not at all tired in the evenings. My body seems to be programmed opposite to how society is run.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 14/10/2024 14:54

65 and 10 pm. If dh is away then its long hot shower, hot chocolate, a snack and in bed for 8 with a film.
I retire next week and said "ooo I can stay up till 2 watching films" he said "but you won't though"

Jaehee · 14/10/2024 15:00

I’ve never been able to do the watching TV in bed thing. I don’t have a tv in my room so it would have to be laptop which is rubbish, and I struggle to get comfortable. I like to get into bed with the intention of sleeping rather than treating it as an extension of my living room. When I read in bed, I read lying on my side in the dark until my eyes feel heavy.

BeatsAntique · 14/10/2024 15:21

@Alaimo I leave the office between 6 and 7pm on days I have a commute (3/5) to avoid the traffic but about every other week I go to after work drinks or meet a friend for dinner. I go to see a lot of live music and DP and I go to the cinema once a week. I go to the gym or an exercise class three times a week, and also have book club on a weekday evening every other week. I do my chores, grocery shopping, life admin etc on Saturday mornings so I have the rest of the weekend free.

GameOfJones · 14/10/2024 15:56

I'm 36 and a creature of habit. Upstairs at 10.30pm and in bed by 10.45pm to read a chapter of my book so lights out and going to sleep normally some time after 11pm. If I really get into my book and read more I like to be asleep by midnight. If I'm very knackered I skip the reading and am asleep by 11pm. Up at 7am every day so I easily get 7-8 hours a night which feels perfect.

I never go to bed before 9pm unless I'm really ill. I'm surprised the number of people saying they do on here. The only people IRL that I know go to bed before 9pm either are shift workers or have M.E!

SlashBeef · 14/10/2024 17:28

I don't understand the "you don't have an evening!!" people when they follow that up by saying they just watch TV Confused
I find tv to be absolute shite. I'd rather be getting 9 hours sleep and going to work feeling good than watching something just so I've "had an evening".
