For context: I'm 36, mum of three (youngest is 2.5), work four days a week.

Im also someone who needs a lot of sleep.

So... introductions over. I'm in bed for 8/8.30 and asleep 8.30-9 every night. I then get up at 5.30/6 with my toddler.

Aibu to ask your age and when you go to sleep?

37 with a toddler, go to bed at 9.30/10 most nights except one weekend night when I know my DH is on wake up duty and I go to bed about 11.30.

What life things? Because usually a lot of my evening (especially now it's getting darker) are spent just watching TV or reading, so genuinely curious how other people fill their evenings.

I watch TV and read when I'm in. I have a couple of hobby groups that meet once a month in the evening, and am a member of a charity group that meets once a week in the evening. I occasionally go to the cinema or theatre or meet friends for a meal out as well.

If I went to sleep at 9 pm I would be wide awake at 4.

If I started needing to sleep for 10 hours every night I would be going to the GP for a blood test.

Thepeopleversuswork · 14/10/2024 07:18

52 usually in bed by 10, asleep by 10.30 to 11. Up at either 5 or 6 depending on whether I am running.

I know a lot of sleep is good but I couldn’t go to bed at 8pm. It would mean having no time to decompress after work (honestly I am often still working at 9). I don’t understand how people cope with not having an evening.

GreyCarpet · 14/10/2024 07:19
  1. Go to bed 9.30-10.30pm but have often fallen asleep on the sofa before that.

Up at 6.30am for work.

I rarely go out on a week night but, if I do, I still aim to be in bed for 11.

coffeesaveslives · 14/10/2024 07:20

I go up to bed around 9-9.30 but don't go to sleep until almost midnight. I read or watch TV or scroll social media.

I'm 35. Up at 7-7.30 during the week.

Yeah me too. I think it’s good to focus on getting good sleep but 10 hours a day is too much unless you have a chronic condition. Too much sleep makes people listless and apathetic and isn’t good.

RampantIvy · 14/10/2024 07:21

I wonder if most of the early to bed posters watch TV in bed?

We don't have a TV in the bedroom.

Londonrach1 · 14/10/2024 07:21

40s. Go up with dd and in next room to her. In bed 8.30 am.... asleep either 8.30 or 10 depending on how tried I am... usually 8.30. I'm just in bed from 8.30 reading

No TV in bedroom. In fact I rarely watch our one TV downstairs.

Wimbledonmum1985 · 14/10/2024 07:24

Baffled at those going to bed by 8/8.30 - don’t you miss having an evening? I’m not even a night owl myself by a grown adult in bed at 8pm just seems odd.

I am usually in bed around 10 and up at 6.30.

thehourwaslate · 14/10/2024 07:26

I’m astounded that so many people go to bed before 9pm! Even 10pm seems very early to me. Do you not watch tv? I’ve always thought of 9pm as the start of the main programmes. I know nowadays most programmes can be watched at any time, but it still feels like 9pm onwards is prime viewing time!

38, bed around midnight, up at 7:30am on weekdays, 8:30/9am on weekends. 3 children, eldest is 5, youngest is 5 months.

I mean each to their own but I agree it seems odd and self defeating. I would have thought any health benefits you would get from having more sleep would be cancelled out by having no quality downtime after you finish work or put your kids to bed…

I agree.

I'd be wondering if I was ill if I needed to go to bed at 8.30 every day.

That isn't 'normal' in my experience of family and friends.
If you have children and especially teens, they'll still be up and around.

I'm not a night owl at all. My ideal bedtime is anywhere from 10-11ish. 11.30pm would be 'late' for me. I tend to wake up around 6am but get up around 7am.

28 - bed at 8-8.30 weekday
Weekend - try my best to stay up longer but conk out on the couch

HelpMeGetThrough · 14/10/2024 07:54

52 (OH is 55), we went up at 7:30 last night. Saturday was just before 9pm.

It all rock and roll here!

Wells37 · 14/10/2024 07:55

45 about 10pm

Do you get interrupted sleep at night and get up very early?

My evenings are spent doing hobbies, seeing friends, going to the gym or running club, running DS to activities, cooking, housework, watching TV, reading etc. If you're in bed at 8pm how do you do any of that?

DustyMaiden · 14/10/2024 08:10

I’m 62 , go between 10 and 11 get up at 8 . Been retired 10 years. I used to go at 3 or 4 get up at 11. I wanted to have a morning rather than a long evening watching TV.

Liveheretoo · 14/10/2024 08:28

Such a good thread and I am genuinely surprised how early people go to bed.

MouseofCommons · 14/10/2024 08:36

50 and bed at 9pm. Up at 6:30 in the week. My sleep isn't brilliant as I have too much on my mind.

Except Fridays and Saturdays when I can usually get to bed by 7:30pm and have a proper rest until about 7am, it's bliss.

More than 7 hours makes me sluggish. And if I woke at 7 and went back to sleep until 8, I'd wake up feeling more tired than I did at 7.

cinapolada · 14/10/2024 08:41

Crikey I'd feel like I was missing out on life with some of these bedtimes! If I'm tired, 10pm, but normally closer to 11. I'm 36, kids are well beyond the early morning stage, normal office job, I don't feel tired very often.

Thepeopleversuswork · 14/10/2024 08:41

@Jaehee

Me too. People really fetishise sleep and of course getting enough is important but based on anecdotal observation when people have to get into bed at the first opportunity it’s usually a sign that something isn’t right. I think people sometimes become addicted to sleep.

Sleeping from 8pm to 7am, unless you are ill, just isn’t necessary and is probably doing more harm than good.

Ah here, that’s just bizarre. You’ll be dead long enough.
