Soft drinks without Aspartame

Roundthemoon · 12/10/2024 17:12

I was drinking diet soft drinks as I thought they were slightly healthier. Now I've been hearing a lot of bad reports about Aspartame, which is the sweetener that they use in a lot of these drinks.

It seems to be in so many drinks. And so many studies show that it's not good for us.

Has anyone found any nice drinks to drink that don't have aspartame in them?

I can’t find a single reputable article they says the hearing loss from quinine toxicity is permanent.
Im part of a huge deaf network as my son has sensorineural deafness that’s genetic and permanent. No one has heard of permanent hearing loss from drinking tonic water… they told me of one person who was deaf from quinine treatment for malaria. But hearing returned once quinine treatment stopped…

I think if you look hard enough all liquid you could drink will have some harmful effects to someone.

Just to clarify about what you said about toxic quinine levels.

You said a toxic level of quinine is 3g.

You said that most tonic drinks have 83mg of quinine per litre. So that If someone drank 4 bottles it would be at a toxic level.

There would definitely have been days where my mum would have drank 4 1 litre bottles of tonic water.

That was her main drink. She bought it cuz she thought it was healthy.

You said it reaches a toxic level at 3g. How toxic is toxic? What does it do at a toxic level do you know?

Jojobees · 12/10/2024 19:17

Toxicity occurs at a minimum of 3g so she’d need to chug 4litres without passing urine.
Not a cumulative 4 litres, as her kidneys work and she passes urine meaning the concentration of quinine in her system is never going to be 3g

I don't drink stuff with artificial sweeteners as it tastes like shit and makes me thirstier.

Full fat Coke and the cherry variant have no sweeteners if you want an occasional fizzy drink. Unfortunately Pepsi added sweeteners to their standard Pepsi last year so had to cross that one off the list.

Asda do a high juice with no sweeteners, apple and mango flavour. It has a label on it saying sugar not sweeteners, as they also do a sweetener variant of it.

Judellie · 12/10/2024 19:20

Rubicon Rose lemonade has no aspartame apparently - the sweetener says sucralose, don't know if that's better or worse than aspartame?
I only drink tap water, tea or coffee or, very occasionally, cranberry juice, so no expert.

At 83mg a litre where do you get that 4 litre bottles is 3g.

QueenBitch666 · 12/10/2024 19:22

I buy Rocks or dilute fresh juices with water
For the gym I put fruit t bags in my water bottle and fill with water being mindful that some fruit teas have added sweeteners

It's not me that said it, if you go back and look.

I repeated it to another poster.

It’s horrible and still gives me the migraines and vomiting.

It gives me the shits, I hate it.

WhamBamThankU · 12/10/2024 19:27

Some of the aldi fizzy mocktails like peach Bellini (I believe) or their blue raspberry pop don't have aspartame. Haven't checked them all so you'd have to look.

M&S own brand lemonade (last time I had some) was just sugar no sweeteners

It still is , someone pointed this out on here last week and I was delighted

tellmeitsnotjustme12 · 12/10/2024 19:31

Cawston or Dalston cans are lovely. The Dalston Rhubard is my favourite. I also buy the Rocks brand diluting juice for kids and that’s nice with sparking water added for a treat.

Roundthemoon · 12/10/2024 19:31

No more sweeteners for me!

How old is your mum @Roundthemoon ? Some people get hearing loss associated with old age due to no particular reason.

I mean, why bother posting anything new. May as well search on MN as someone has bound to have asked... and whilst we're at it, let's not bother with MN as we can Google everything.

Robinsons Fruit Cordials are pretty good but they do have Stevia in them.

WickedWineWitch · 12/10/2024 19:38

There's also good kombucha now - I like the Hip Pop CBD one from sainsburys (cherry flavour).

I buy mostly normal sugar squash from Asda now and add to sparking water

Every regular squash, from Asdas, as well as all the other supermarkets, contains sweeteners, unless you buy those expensive, brand versions.

Ladyof2024 · 12/10/2024 19:42

You could just drink sparkling water and then find something to flavor it with, for example squeeze a fresh lime or lemon or get something like strawberry cordial, or food flavoring?

Another way is to make a strong fruit tea infusion and then dilute that with fizzy water.

MargaretBetts · 12/10/2024 19:42

We have a soda stream to reduce plastic waste as we like fizzy water in our house. We add nice cordials or lemon, berries etc if we want more than plain water.

Mr Fitzpatricks are nice.

These drinks have at least 2 kinds of sweeteners.
