Soft drinks without Aspartame

Roundthemoon · 12/10/2024 17:12

I was drinking diet soft drinks as I thought they were slightly healthier. Now I've been hearing a lot of bad reports about Aspartame, which is the sweetener that they use in a lot of these drinks.

It seems to be in so many drinks. And so many studies show that it's not good for us.

Has anyone found any nice drinks to drink that don't have aspartame in them?

She didn't realise until she went to a hearing specialist.

So now I definitely avoid tonic water, as I dont want to lose my hearing like my mum.

Exactly. Like everything , it's fine in moderation. Unless you're drinking gallons of diet coke every day then it's not a problem.

It still tastes nasty, can always spot if in a drink.

ConfusingPainAdvice · 12/10/2024 18:33

M&S own brand lemonade (last time I had some) was just sugar no sweeteners

Redhound · 12/10/2024 18:41

I live on Rocks blackcurrant (after Ribena went down) and for soft drinks it's proper Coke. I really miss Dr Pepper. I refuse to drink anything with sweeteners in for several reasons but it is hard to avoid now :(

Cawston Press rhubarb is lovely. Also fever tree drinks.

merrymelodies · 12/10/2024 18:45

I use unsweetened fruit juice and sparkling water. It's delicious.

Aspartame has been debunked sooo many times. At this stage it's almost been debunked as many times as vaccines giving autism. The problem is that people make money from scaring people. Please do not take advice from anyone who still peddles that nonsense.

Don't have any at all for a year then drink a diet soda and tell me how you feel.
Aspartame is a massive trigger for my Fibromyalgia pains and stomach issues and I'd advise anyone to avoid it like the plague. Same for MSG

What I've noticed is that if I have a drink with aspartame, I have less bladder control.

So if I drink water, and then I need to go for a wee, I can wait till I get to the bathroom, no problem.

If I drink diet coke, and then need to go for a wee, I have much less bladder control, I'm running to the bathroom, and nearly wetting myself before I get there.

It's definitely not good

Yeah but what if drink a lot. My mum used to drink a bottle of tonic water every two days.

She now has extremely bad hearing. She's lost a lot of her hearing.

If you look up lists of things that affect hearing, quinine is on the top ten list.

That’s not a lot at all.

CommanderHaysPaperKnife · 12/10/2024 18:52

I love Dash drinks. I subscribe and they're delivered to my home each month.

Has Stevia. Was gutted as I saw they did a cherry drink and I love cherry but can’t have it as it has Stevia. Dalston’s is very nice though.

DonnaBanana · 12/10/2024 18:58

Why don’t more drinks contain stevia? It’s really nice and natural too

Jojobees · 12/10/2024 18:58

Quinine toxicity occurs at a minimum of 3g. Most tonic drinks are around 83mg per litre. So she’d have needed to be drinking 4+ litres every day.
Also toxicity from quinine causes a sensorineural hearing loss which is reversible, and very rarely permanent.

It’s horrible and still gives me the migraines and vomiting.

eyespartyparty · 12/10/2024 18:59

Sainsbury's High Juice (Apple & Mango and blackcurrant) have no sweeteners, and are nice with fizzy water.

Most of the time though we just fizz water with the soda stream and add the bottled lime juice or lemon juice.

She did drink a lot. I'd say some days she may have drank 2 or 3 or 4 one litre bottles. They are very cheap in Tesco. And she liked the taste. And ironically we drank them because we thought tonic water was healthy.

Also it says online that more studies need to be done to find out if hearing loss from quinine is temporary, or permanent.

They haven't done enough research or studies to see if it causes permanent hearing loss.

I don't want to drink something that may even cause temporary hearing loss. So I won't be drinking tonic water again.

It's up to you guys if you want to. But the hearing specialist that we were talking to , has totally put me off it.

I actually think I am allergic to aspartame. I cannot stand the taste and it “furs” my mouth. If I have a soft drink I drink full sugar coke but would like some alternatives .

Similar here. Drinks with aspartame leave my mouth and throat feeling dry and sore. I have Rocks if I want squash, but usually just drink tea and water.

Jojobees · 12/10/2024 19:10

I can’t find a single reputable article they says the hearing loss from quinine toxicity is permanent.
Im part of a huge deaf network as my son has sensorineural deafness that’s genetic and permanent. No one has heard of permanent hearing loss from drinking tonic water… they told me of one person who was deaf from quinine treatment for malaria. But hearing returned once quinine treatment stopped…

I think if you look hard enough all liquid you could drink will have some harmful effects to someone.

flyingfar · 12/10/2024 19:13

Roundthemoon · 12/10/2024 18:54

By who's standards?

By the amount of quinine in tonic water but you’ve said she drank one bottle over two days and further on you are saying she drank up to 4 litres. Really?

Jojobees · 12/10/2024 19:14

You are quoting 2 very different amounts, earlier you say she has a bottle over 2 days and now it’s 4 litres every day…..

Skyrainlight · 12/10/2024 18:07

I've heard that too. So many obese people live on diet drinks.

Edited

Plenty of thin people live on diet drinks.

People are fat because they eat too much not because they are drinking diet coke.
