To have barged into someone?

I was getting off the train today. People tend to queue either side of the doors to then get on but a woman stood right infront of the doors, not giving me an opportunity to exit anywhere. I think she wanted to get on first. People's manners are bloody awful. As I walked off, I swore but also barged into her. I know I was BU now, but after a long week and battling mental health, I saw red. How can I help myself in future situations?

I know I need to manage my anger better. I will get help. It was just the way she wanted on first and so didn't queue but stood right infront of the doors to get on first.

How will you 'get help'?

taxguru · 11/10/2024 19:14

I do the same when walking down a footpath and there's a couple (or 3) walking side by side taking up the entire width of the footpath. Heaven knows what they expect me to do, maybe vaporise, but it's blindingly obvious they need to go into single file. If they don't, I just carry on and sometimes end up barging into them if they don't actually engage their brain! No, I'm not going to say "excuse me" - it's them in the wrong, and saying excuse me is very passive and making it look my fault I actually exist.

I could see as we were pulling up that she clocked the queues either side of where the door would stop and wanted on first so stood in where the doorway was.

Doesn't mean she was thinking of anyone but herself.

I maintain that saying excuse me to someone is the first thing to try.

GoldenLegend · 11/10/2024 19:25

I say 'Manners!' in my best Lady Bracknell voice.

Pandasnacks · 11/10/2024 19:30

I think deliberately barging into her and swearing is a bit much, she was rude, you were rude in response. Neither of you look amazing in this situation but there's also no harm done.

JohnCravensNewsround · 11/10/2024 19:38

Oh I get this all the time. I get off a train to London 1 stop before the end. So I'm getting off as dozens are trying to get on.
Most days I just say " let me off so you can get on"
Every so often I lose it and just launch myself into the middle of it.

Dick move. You dont touch people’s bodies, you definitely don’t hurt people’s bodies. Infant school stuff.

On top of that you don’t know if they’ve got chronic pain, had a recent op, are in a bad state.

Honestly if feels ridiculous typing this out to an adult.

That's as silly as OP. 'Touch people's bodies' is making it so much more than it is. And if they'd had a recent op etc they probably wouldn't be cutting the queue and prepared to push close to everyone getting off, and if they were it's their own fault!

FlippertyFlopperty · 11/10/2024 19:45

I'm terrified I'm going to get on trouble now.

What do you mean?

Just say excuse me and get off the train the same as everyone else next time.

Was this your first ever journey?

This sort of thing happens every single day on trains all over the world.

eurochick · 11/10/2024 19:49

I had this situation once and the woman actually punched me as I tried to get past her. I reported it to the station staff but of course the train had pulled out by then. 🤬

Ablondiebutagoody · 11/10/2024 19:53

I do it all the time. More often than not call them a prick too.

Get real!

You obviously have never commuted in the rush hour.

DappledThings · 11/10/2024 20:00

Anyone who doesn't follow the rule of letting people for the train first is fair game for a shoulder barge.

5128gap · 11/10/2024 20:01

No one queues for my train. There's always a huddle by the doors that separates to allow people off. Everyone is a bit pushy because there's not enough seats, it's an hour journey and its always hot as Hades on there. It really doesn't bring out the best in people. I stay calm by remembering that it's not the fault of the passengers that there isn't a better system or enough space and people are stressed and tired.

Bonjovispjs · 11/10/2024 20:20

I look them in the eye and say "you're supposed to let people off first" in a very loud voice, they soon move.

citysloth · 11/10/2024 18:05

This drives me mad too. I would have done the same, she shouldn't have blocked the exit.

This. Serves her right for being stupid and rude

CoastToCreek · 11/10/2024 20:25

I think there’s a lot of stress out in public. I agree the blocker woman didn’t follow the norm of letting people disembark first. Makes me realise that OP may have been at the front of the line to move off the train first otherwise someone else may have told that woman to move aside.

Not sure how many people are on the train or stepping off, it can be mayhem if you are the first. Join us at the back! I’m someone who waits for a clear path (let everyone else rush), and then I hop off the train or whatever else.

Sayoonara · 11/10/2024 20:36

Don't worry about it OP. Maybe she learned a lesson not to selfishly stand in the way.

I've commuted on the tube for decades. I just walk straight off and barge through anyone that is standing in the way, with possibly an excuse me, usually not. I've got 'right of way', they need to move. If they get bashed, it's their problem. There's no time for 'let me off so you can get on' etc, there is a shitload of people behind me trying to get off too.

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 11/10/2024 20:50

YABU for trying to use mental health struggles as an excuse. You did it because she pissed you off, not because mental illness makes people violent.

Icantbuystrawberries · 11/10/2024 20:53

No I would have done the same!
