To not know how to keep warm at the playground?!

sarahb083 · 11/10/2024 09:47

I don't want another year of freezing all winter at the playground! I have plenty of winter clothes for being out and about, but nothing that keeps me properly warm just standing around. What am I missing? I have a hat and gloves, a warm down coat, cosy socks, etc.

Please tell me how you stay warm at the playground!

Long Covid has changed me from an always cold woman to a woman who isn’t always freezing and complaining. If that hadn’t happened I would definitely have been wearing a DryRobe as part of my Winter Childmining Uniform, in addition to heated gloves etc etc.
They are excellent for watching sports etc especially when it’s so wet and windy.
However, I do so love this video from GLC, ☺️😉😆

I walk down that hill almost every day.

I’ve spent many a night at the football. It’s great fun standing there in -5 in February. My kit for the winter months from top to bottom: thermal top from Uniqlo (their HeatTech range is excellent and affordable), fleece top, then a good wind proof waterproof. Even if it’s not wet, wind proof is key. Generally speaking you get what you pay for in terms of quality. I like Rab and Patagonia for brands. Also a hat; super important, ideally a fleece lined beanie.

Then thermal leggings from Uniqlo; again inexpensive and a game changer. You can put them underneath whatever trousers you normally wear.

Then thermal socks. That’s enough for me with trainers or boots.

Close fitting base layer tucked into your knickers. I've officially turned into my mother.

unmemorableusername · 11/10/2024 17:57

A coat made from animal.

It's unethical but it works.

OhMaria2 · 11/10/2024 18:02

You need lined hat, it's a real game changer.
Boots that don't transmit cold into your feet!

sheldonRockz · 11/10/2024 18:04

Thermal leggings were a game changer for me, and thick therm socks with boots - m&S did some great ones - think they were tenner a pair (maybe for 2) but definitely worth the price.

Oh I don't know if anyone's said this yet! .. but I have this electric gillet thing! I loooooove it! Stick the battery in and your whole upper body warms up nice and toasty! Battery lasts about 3 hours on max heat and about 6 on a lower heat setting! I'm tempted to buy another battery so when I visit mil I can wear it all day!!! (her house is freezing in the winter!) Battery is a plug in to charge thing! But you can swap it for another while first is charging.

I highly recommend! I don't think mine looks that nice, I should have bought a slightly different style! But I mostly wear it outside under a coat when dog walking or when watching the children run around at a footy match or something!

(I hate being cold! I have all the gadgets!! An electric blanket at night time! A foot warmer for when I'm working! And about a million hot water bottles!!! This gillet is the best thing for walking around outdoors!!)

ohreallythatisveryinteresting · 11/10/2024 18:06

I used to be at the park in February for HOURS. North face artik parka. Still going strong 10 years later.

always hat, Wool scarf, gloves, now rechargeable hand warmers.

I also have electric gloves ! They are amazing

I think knee length socks and thick soled boots make the most difference if you’re having to stand around
Then a coat that goes down to your mid thigh, or even warmer, your knees.

I used to take a pair of cheap waterproof trousers for everyone for playground visits or watching sport.

Means little ones can go on the swings or slide or bimble around on the grass even if it’s wet.
And adults can sit on a damp cold bench, or on the ground with little ones if you need to, and you are still protected from the worst of the cold or wet or wind.
And when you leave you can just take them off and shove them back in your bag for next time because they fold up small and light - I’d definitely be uncomfortably hot walking home in lots of layers, and end up having to carry half of them.

Thank you! So many great ideas in here.

The Uniqlo heattech leggings are fab - so thin I used to wear them under my tights at work.

dry robe best thing since sliced bread.
You'll look like a tit but I wouldn't be with out mine now. Also fantastic for walking the dog on cold rainy days

I agree re dry robe. tRhe only people who say you look at tit are those who can’t afford one. In my experience.

I’ve just had an ad flash up on FB for new Oodies fleece joggers, same material as their massive overcoat things! I didn’t look at price as I’m not interested but I’m sure that there will soon be lots of copycat ones on the market.

CrikeyMajikey · 15/10/2024 03:36

Dry Robe. Scarf. Hat. Sheepskin gloves. Muck Boots or other neoprene wellies.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/10/2024 06:40

Wool hat, gloves, baselayers, socks.
Not just wool looking, but actual wool rock fabrics. Very warm.even when wet.

I live in a country where it gets colder that UK (around 0 most of the winter) and I've never been cold in this Jojo coat (just take the mid panel out and it's a "proper" coat). I normally layer with a Boden sweatshirt (lots on eBay) and thermal polo if really cold.

The only thing that keeps my feet warm are some tall leather boots I bought from Ugg a few year ago, in a size bigger and with their thermal socks inside.

BrimfulofSasha · 15/10/2024 11:09

Thermal long sleeve tops, they don’t have to be sports ones. M&S do normal T-shirt looking ones. Also gloves and a hat. If your extremities are cold you will be. Secondly, do you go straight from a car to a playground? If so park five minutes away and get a brisk walk in to get the blood pumping

Soozikinzii · 15/10/2024 11:17

I've got reiker fur lined boots, which I must admit I was grumpy about when they were delivered . I hadn't realised they were fur lined when I ordered them online . But they're a game changer! So warm.and comfortable.
