To not know how to keep warm at the playground?!

sarahb083 · 11/10/2024 09:47

I don't want another year of freezing all winter at the playground! I have plenty of winter clothes for being out and about, but nothing that keeps me properly warm just standing around. What am I missing? I have a hat and gloves, a warm down coat, cosy socks, etc.

Please tell me how you stay warm at the playground!

Lots of layers!

Yes, but also in danger of being photographed and plastered all over the Dry Robe Wankers Facebook page.

What is a dry robe?

I need to google!

Oh my goodness...why so HUGE???

They look so cumbersome, literally like a tent.

AngelinaFibres · 11/10/2024 11:30

Thermals. M and S do lovely ones.

outforawalkbiatch · 11/10/2024 11:31

@oakleaffy because they're for getting changed under - designed for the beach/outdoor swimming

So not for walking in!
That's a lot of money for just getting changed under.

MERINO WOOL {get the men's tops} infinitely better than the women's. Thicker and warmer.

florasl · 11/10/2024 11:37

Fairfax and Favor Boudicca boots are excellent, proper sheepskin lining rather than a synthetic fleece, wool base layers.

Bamboozie · 11/10/2024 11:38

I agree about keeping your feet warm.
Whenever my feet are cold, it’s like the cold works it’s way up my body, even if I’m layered up well.
Wool socks worn with fleece lined boots or waterproof walking type trainers.

Don’t forget thermal layers.
Uniqlo do decent long sleeve thermal tops.

Cantbebotheredwithausername · 11/10/2024 11:40

You need something that covers your bum at the very least - but ideally really warm, windproof pants. Gore-tex pants with thick layers under will do. Skiing pants are better. Down pants are superb. I have a pair of down pants, bought in a very large size on purpose. I look like a doofus wearing them and everybody is laughing, but I'm warm. I hate being cold, so I'll take the friendly mockery any time.

Ftctvycdul · 11/10/2024 11:41

Fleece-lined leggings, thermal long sleeved top and two pairs of socks work for me

TheBunyip · 11/10/2024 11:47

is this as a teacher or with your own kids? i ask as if it's a teacher thing presumably you're not outside for extended amounts of time so 2000 layers is impractical? i have a didrikson coat which is an absolute revelation in being light, comfortable, easy to fling on and oh so warm

if it's your own kids, pub train them instead 😁

Resisterance · 11/10/2024 11:48

I have to spend 6 days a week on the football pitch and have low blood pressure so get really cold. I feel you.

I wear the following-

Acai thermal leggings (only buy when there's a sale on though as they're not cheap. Sale on now btw)
acaioutdoorwear.com/collections/outlet?campaignid=2078496697&adgroupid=162105759586&adid=699742318524&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwmaO4BhAhEiwA5p4YL-M6n0tHouyWsX2eiHwTi7eX6zYqqkpHtiaerA6FLts6i088Ze_qTBoCjZUQAvD_BwE

Uniqlo heat tech thermals have changed my life. I live in these from October to April now. They have a few different versions from really ultra heat tech to less so... so make sure you get the right ones

www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/women/innerwear/heattech-thermal-innerwear

Also uniqlo down gilet which packs up really small

www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/women/innerwear/heattech-thermal-innerwear?path=%2C%2C37323%2C&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwmaO4BhAhEiwA5p4YLywx3wyjx63pSDMKxy6tm0scBtzp5UuA9bwEGbJwec8avAngzMvBKRoC7lYQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Sorel Torino boots... game changer! I bought my nearly new from vinted so much cheaper that way.

Didrikson winter coat. Useful as its not huge so i don't feel like a fat bloater in it.

Thick men's socks from tk maxx

Fingerless gloves from Turtle Doves. They have an outlet store on Ebay which is much cheaper!

Touloosia · 11/10/2024 11:51

How long are you standing still/sitting in the cold for?

I've always thought I was a cold person but I only wear thin leggings and jumper with a coat - sometimes a hat and gloves if it's realy frosty and cold. I honestly can't imagine wearing all of the things described here (that isn't faux amazement, I'm actually starting to think perhaps I'm not such a cold person after all!)

I also keep moving - I don't like standing it sitting still very much.

Wexone · 11/10/2024 11:56

Merina wool tops - Uniqlo amazing ones
Long duck down puffer coat - not Polyester - you need natural materials to keep warm. Polyester does not retain heat
Thermal underwear including long sleeve tops and leggings - Marks
Body warmers - Go to horsey shops they do fab slim ones
Socks and boots - Not runners
Layers of natural fibers not bulky so you can still do stuff

Marblesbackagain · 11/10/2024 12:00

Don't stand, move, I used to so slow jog laps so win win.

GanninHyem · 11/10/2024 12:04

Movement, run around with your kids.

Differentstarts · 11/10/2024 12:08

A hot drink

ballybooboo · 11/10/2024 14:13

The advantage of having a kid in your 40s is that perimenopause has meant a lifetime of feeling freezing my internal temperature is definitely up a notch, not helpful in the summer, but comes into its own in the winter!

Or just join in with the kids, I've just got one so they like me to be swinging and sliding with them Grin

MoneyAndPercentages · 11/10/2024 09:51

Proper lined boots! This was the game changer for me, nothing else worked 🥶

Agree. Snowboots are the way forward. If my feet get cold, I get cold.

ThatAgileGoldMoose · 11/10/2024 14:19

BOOTS. Thick soles. Hiking socks inside them.

Get a heated waistcoat with rechargeable battery pack ,(or that used a phone spare battery pack). They start from like £25 on Amazon. Wear that over your jumper and under your coat. Wax lyrical to everybody about how wonderful it is.

People have realised just how darn warm abd comfy they are and are wearing them for everything though. And you are advised to size down from your usual size if you don't need to get changed under it so that it's not quite so bulky. If you're worried about fashion maybe not for you but if warmth is your priority...

Also there are a billion different brands doing them now so you don't have to go with the original pricey brand.

glastogal · 11/10/2024 14:26

NorthantsNewbie · 11/10/2024 09:51

And little hand warmers for in your pockets. You can get rechargeable ones, or single use ones which activate in the air. Or those snap ones which you boil up but I can never get them to work.

I have rechargeable ones and I love them for playgrounds/playgroups/school pickup

LindorDoubleChoc · 11/10/2024 14:32

YABU. How silly.

Coruscations · 11/10/2024 14:42

A pair of thin socks inside your thick socks inside sheepskin lined boots.

JustWalkingTheDogs · 11/10/2024 14:44

Heated jacket and leggins. They run off a battery pack and for em is the only real way of keeping warm
