To not know how to keep warm at the playground?!

sarahb083 · 11/10/2024 09:47

I don't want another year of freezing all winter at the playground! I have plenty of winter clothes for being out and about, but nothing that keeps me properly warm just standing around. What am I missing? I have a hat and gloves, a warm down coat, cosy socks, etc.

Please tell me how you stay warm at the playground!

How cold is it and why do you have to stand still? I’m in a country where it can be -25 during winter, I work outdoors quite a lot and I’m not cold. Proper gloves or two pairs of gloves. Thermal trousers. Proper shoes and socks (two pairs). My problem is that my phone battery goes down to zero when it’s cold. 😅

Winter2020 · 11/10/2024 10:42

All I can add to everyone's ideas is a hot and filling breakfast such as porridge.

MotiRoller · 11/10/2024 10:44

After spending Dec. 25 in the first year of lockdown (when Xmas was cancelled) freezing my fucking tits off in a playground I invested in ski clothes. I don’t ski but they have been well worth it.

TeamPlaying · 11/10/2024 10:46

Properly warm boots. I wear Ugg style boots from Costco. Keep my feet toasty warm through the winter! Everything else is great, but for me it’s my feet that make the biggest difference.

TheCoolOliveBalonz · 11/10/2024 10:47

Wool!

imisscashmere · 11/10/2024 10:49

I have thermal base layers, snow boots and a very warm winter coat. I DGAF what I look like. I’m warm.

bluecomputerscreen · 11/10/2024 10:50

a thermos for your Brew

LivingDeadGirlUK · 11/10/2024 10:51

If you are able to not sit down then don't, a cold bench will suck all the warmth out of you.

LifeofBrienne · 11/10/2024 10:55

Fleece insoles, knitted tights or leggings under jeans (we tend to wear 3 layers on the top half, only one on the bottom). Thermos flask with a hot drink.
The problem if I layer up really well for standing around in cold weather is if I then go into a shop or on the tube I feel I’m going to pass out!

MrsBobtonTrent · 11/10/2024 10:56

Hiking boots with an added fleece insole. Good socks.
Fleece-lined tights under jeans when particularly cold.

Harumaki/torso warmer
Vest, t shirt, jumper, coat.
Double gloves - fingerless underneath, mittens on top.
Scarf. Hat.
I started wearing one of those tube things that go around the neck and pulling it up over my lower face to try and keep covid masks on. Gamechanger in winter as it kept my nose warm and stopped draughts down my neck. Still use them now on particularly cold days.

I swear by a gilet

GreenTeaLikesMe · 11/10/2024 10:58

How old are your kids? When mine were very little, I had to hover about a foot away. From about 3.5-ish, I started power walking circles of the playground while keeping an eye. Obviously does not work for really tiny playgrounds.

TheWrongBus · 11/10/2024 10:59

Consider getting ski/snowboarding trousers. I have some plain black ones that aren’t particularly bulky so don’t stand out as being skiwear but do have a decent layer of insulation.

And 100% thermal leggings, total game changer! Hubby is now a convert too.

When skiing in very cold weather I wear: normal socks, thick tights, thermal leggings, ski socks and ski trousers. And a similar number of layers on top. Toasty!

capelmustard · 11/10/2024 11:02

Layers as others have said - lots of thin layers keep you much warmer than a couple of thick ones. I like the M&S heat gen

No gaps to let draughts in, a neck warmer or thin scarf that fits neatly inside the collar of your down coat.

Sheepskin insoles with a metallic base. I buy boots a size bigger and pop in the insoles. Thermal tights from M&S.

Hat that covers your ears.

Rechargeable hand warmers from Amazon, a brilliant invention

bigdecisionstomake · 11/10/2024 11:06

Proper wool socks are your friend OP - a bit itchy but if you can get over that they are a game changer.

Proper lined boots! This was the game changer for me, nothing else worked 🥶

This! If you have warm feet then genuinely I find it keeps me all warm. Works the opposite way if I’m overheating it because I’ve got warm socks or boots on.

tinygigolo · 11/10/2024 11:12

Ooh, like a PP I feel like an expert in this from Winter 2020/21 when there was nothing else to do but freeze your bits off in muddy playgrounds! For me sorrel boots and a floor length duvet coat were the game changers. Don’t go for uggs unless you’re well out of the little kids stage and can supervise from a far distance.

LikeABat · 11/10/2024 11:13

Lined boots and knee length socks if not wearing tights/leggings under your trousers. You can get lined winter trousers for walking which may help. Make sure the outer layers are windproof to reduce wind-chill.

Hoplolly · 11/10/2024 11:14

Stay at home with a warm cuppa? I hate playgrounds at the best of times.

Attelina · 11/10/2024 11:17

For watching sports where you have to stand still as a spectator, being a flattened cardboard box as it insulated you from the cold ground.

You need a dry robe. Yes, you’ll look like a wanker. But you’ll be a warm wanker.

Edited

Yes, but also in danger of being photographed and plastered all over the Dry Robe Wankers Facebook page.

Any recommendations for boots please I'm in the market for some new ones. I wear jeans and leggings so ones that will go with both. Thanks

I was recommended 'Bareback' leather and goretex boots by a friend last winter.

They are so comfy and completely waterproof!
Not cheap but so much better than soaked feet.

They are a tad 'heavy' for very long hikes, but superb for dog walks.

I haven't had cold or wet feet since buying them.

The size is ''true''..I have wide feet and a high arch.

Move about more!

I have Raynaud's. That actually doesn't help.
