Why are teachers so rude?

I will preface this by saying I do not have kids and therefore my last interaction with teachers was when I was at school. I'm not going to let my teenage years cloud my judgement.

I have recently taken on a job that involves visiting schools (think cleaning supervisor, but not) I spend a couple of hours walking round with the team, talking about challenges, reviewing paperwork and doing a general checks. I don't have to interact with the teaching staff at all (thank god). But I find them so rude. They think nothing of just butting in mid conversation, no "sorry, I can see your talking, could I just ask X a question" they just start talking. They stare with a frown constantly and consistently. They don't thank you or the children for holding doors open for them. And they never smile back if you smile at them...

It takes me back to being at school all those years ago and now I wonder if it wasn't just me hating the place. I wonder if the teachers were all like that too.

This isn't an isolated incident. I travel to many schools and they are all the same...

A lot of teachers have a victim complex which is annoying.

Could you explain what you mean?

Lyannaa · 12/10/2024 12:08

Oh yes I can explain what I mean.

They think that they should never be challenged. They think that the challenges they face in their job are worse than people have in other jobs. They don't appreciate the perks of the job. They often are not teachers because they wish to inspire their students and do not see why they should try.

I come from a family of teachers and I have 4 children so I am more than entitled to my opinion. And it does not apply to all teachers but certainly it does to some. and seems to be a sort of toxic thread throughout the profession itself. The good teachers are truly amazing though and have the ability to change the lives of their students.

Doesn't sound like a victim complex to me.
Teachers are challenged often. Do they like being challenged by people with no experience in teaching? No. No expert would.

The challenges in teaching are sometimes worse than in lots of jobs. Not always, and not worse than in all other jobs. I have never heard a teacher say they were (though other people love to interpret it this way).

There are indeed shit teachers and amazing teachers. The vast majority are somewhere in between. Just like in all jobs, in fact.

You're right that there is a sort of toxic thread through teaching though. It's created by underfunding, a crisis in lack of support for increasing numbers of children with SEND and traumas, and an excessive workload, leading to disastrous recruitment and retention levels. Lots of teachers leave. The rest stay (because they like the actual teaching bit but either can't afford to quit and start another job from the bottom and/or have never done anything else.

The problem with teaching is that everyone went to school so therefore feel like they know what goes on in teaching. That's when they don't like to be challenged. You may have teachers in your family but if you're not there day in day out then you won't know what goes on. Can you give an example of these challenges?
No one denies that the holidays are a perk of the job so could you also give an example of another perk? I saw colleagues miss important events at their own children's school as they were not allowed the time off. I saw people miss weddings and even funerals of family / friends because you can't just take a day's leave. I saw colleagues with and without children paying through the nose for the holidays because they can't go on the Thursday and come back on the Tuesday etc. I see teacher after teacher taking in boxes of stationery because the budget for that didn't cover what they need. I've seen teachers go in when they're not well because work had to be set and sometimes that's harder than going in.
I've been left a good few years now so sorry if some of my examples are out of date. Please do enlighten me as to which perks I'm missing out on

What a horrible post. Maybe you are the problem. Teaching is not a nice profession to be in anymore, constant observations, no proper breaks and people being constantly rude. Maybe you are rude and don't realise.

I know, don't blame me - I didn't vote for the Tories. But nobody should teach because they need the money if they aren't up to the job.

Whoever said teachers shouldn't be challenged - that's ridiculous. Some teachers shouldn't be there. Standards have slipped so that now people who are not qualified are in posts they should not be.

CrayonCritic5 · 12/10/2024 17:44

Your post shows your complete lack of understanding of the relentless stress and pressure of a teaching job. Maybe if teachers had their workload halved and their pay doubled, they’d have the capacity for pleasantries.

Lyannaa · 12/10/2024 19:14

They certainly should be paid far better than they are. How can the best and brightest be attracted into the profession otherwise?

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 12/10/2024 00:13

This is a really weird statement. What evidence is there to suggest that Strawberry was the problem?

I had a very similar experience when I was teaching - worked with some incredible teachers and some who were not nice people at all and should not have been teaching.

People who state that they find everyone else rude….,

At no point did I say I found everyone else rude. Just a few of the teachers I have worked with. I actually said multiple times that it wasn’t all of them. Many if not most teachers are lovely but some do the job for the wrong reasons and seem to enjoy looking down on others. I was treated awfully in my last teaching job by a select few teachers and it really effected my mental health. Maybe stop telling people that they’re the problem in situations you know nothing about. It really doesn’t make you look intelligent.

But that isn't what strawberry said. Did you miss the sentence, "It's not all of them by any means" ?
