To think sometimes people use words without fully understanding them?

There were a few examples in my previous AIBU thread. Including, but not limited to:

Genocide
Antisemitism
Zionism
Ethnic Cleansing

These are strong trigger words for many people, myself included, but I think they are often misused and/or misunderstood.

Thoughts?

Say what?

I know, it’s an abomination that ignoramuses have this power over the dictionary, but I’m afraid it’s true.

"I literally died!"

Is a figure of speech.
They literally don't mean literally @InfoSecInTheCity

Sorry for causing you such a pericombobulation.

Disinterested when they mean uninterested
Incredibly when they mean very
Empathy when they mean sympathy

BagettesCheesey · 10/10/2024 21:07

Can you be a bit more pacific?

DinosaurMunch · 10/10/2024 21:10

Ignorant when they mean rude

I had a colleague who did everything "vicariously" without a clue what it meant. The most common one was "don't mind me while I vicariously dig into this <whatever food she had>".
She also overdid it exercising vicariously at the gym, and so on... 😂

Have you got examples?

Well take the current hurricane Milton

someone might say
“the situation in Florida was exasperated by the storm surge.”

when they should say

“the situation in Florida was exacerbated by the storm surge.”

There's when there are is needed. It's everywhere.

I blame Levi's ads of the early 80s when I first noticed this:

There's rivets and there's Levi's rivets.

The utter utter bastards.

ect instead of etc

that’s another one where a knowledge of Latin would help! 🙄
because etc is short for ‘et cetera’’
meaning ‘and the rest’.
