To think that people shouldn’t wear large squirts of very very potent perfume?

It’s the equivalent of listening to music and shite on loud speaker on public transport. Everyone around them has to suffer it.

I was actually wheezing and felt nauseous at the strength of someone’s perfume the other day and I couldn’t leave or move away from it.

FFS, why are people so self absorbed?

I like my perfumes to wear close to the skin so they don't intrude on others' spaces. It's quite hard now most perfumes come in atomisers, because you can't control the dose you get with one squirt. Some atomisers give you a tiny little pixie breath of perfume; others a massive hose-like dousing. If the scent is powerful, this can mean even one squirt is a squirt too many.

The old-fashioned non-atomiser bottles were better... you could put one little dab of perfume on a pulse point so only you and anyone close enough to hug would know it was there.

Perfumed body lotion has a much more subtle effect.

As we go nose blind very quickly to our own perfume. In mins to very max a couple of hours, I do wonder the point of wearing it at all if you can’t smell it and only those so close as to be hugging can. Unless you’re constantly being hugged by someone who you wish to smell it. I can’t see the point. For you you may as well not bother.

I don't go nose blind to my perfumes... they linger all day, close but pleasurably persistent. They are for my own enjoyment, not for others. If I found I was going nose blind to a scent I definitely wouldn't bother with it again.

You may smell them but perhaps everyone else smells them x30. That's the whole point.

Maybe if other people are that triggered they should just walk around with a peg on their nose. I wouldn't expect anyone else to change what they do/wear for me!

How do you feel about the smoking ban? Do you think it’s fine for people to smoke indoors in public spaces?

DrCoconut · 09/10/2024 18:40

@ObieJoyful me too. People who don't suffer migraines won't understand the sinking feeling you get when you're in an enclosed public space such as a bus and someone arrives absolutely stinking of perfume. Or worse still starts spraying it. There is just no need to douse yourself in the stuff or spray it in public. It's probably because I associate it with illness but I find the smell offensive and would 100% rather smell BO or weed than perfume (though smelling none of the above is better!) My workplace banned spraying perfume and asked people to be mindful about how much they have on in response to how ill it makes some of us, which is a huge bonus.

BurntBroccoli · 09/10/2024 19:25

I spritz perfume in the air and just walk through so it's not too strong.

If you’re not going nose blind then you’re wearing either incredibly strong perfume or a shit Ton of it, no way round it.

i can’t smell my perfume after a few mins, which is normal. I asked my daughter if she could smell Perfume on me or not, and she said yes, it’s quite strong.

so if you can smell it it’s what people are complaining about.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 09/10/2024 21:08

YANBU, I had to speak to one of my team about their perfume, it was so strong it overpowered every room they went in! And we are in healthcare! Awful for patients and staff who can’t move away!

No, not spraying while out. That is disgusting.

I mean dousing themselves excessively before.

Disgusting 😂

I have a total aversion to chanel no 5. I cannot abide it. It smells like musty old ladies to me (and I am not far off being an old lady myself).

I went to the cinema recently and the person in the seat beside me was doused in the stuff. She was only 25 or so. She reeked. I put up with it for the first half, scarf wrapped subtly round my face, then pretended to go out to the loo and came back and sat on the other side of dh, two seats away.

It is completely gross. Worst perfume ever.
