To have reservations about a friendship with a woman who refers to Israel's actions in Gaza as a genocide?

Oodiks · 07/10/2024 22:28

I like this woman a lot, but we have very differing world views, specifically her belief that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

We work at a university and were coming back from lunch together when she commented that she was pleased the protestors hadn't come back. I agreed, noting how nerve wracking it must have been for Jewish students on campus to run the gauntlet of pro-Palestinian / anti-Zionist posters in the encampment.

We'd been talking about the American election over lunch, and I thought we'd agreed that Kamala Harris was the better candidate for her views on climate change, if nothing else, but then my 'friend' commented on Biden/Harris sending arms "to support the genocide" and I was left kind of speechless.

Am I being unreasonable to feel unsure about continuing this friendship?

Some great examples of propaganda here.

Nothing in that post was propaganda.

Maddy70 · 09/10/2024 17:57

Well it is actually the definition of genocide

You need to say you dont want to discuss politics and move the conversation on

I know, especially the suicidal Palestinians who chose to get blown to bits.

But they do choose to die as martyrs

LetThereBeLove · 09/10/2024 18:00

Personally OP I couldn't remain friends with that person. Most people who believe as she does do not want to discuss/hear an opposing opinion.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians and their children, have not chosen to become martyrs.

anotherlevel · 09/10/2024 18:04

@LetThereBeLove So you're telling me the IDF were thoughtful and had the Palestinians best interest at heart when they asked them to evacuate to a safe area? Do you believe that?

Notaflippinclue · 09/10/2024 18:07

Someone said most people are against Israel - well Palestine and Iran are (that is Hamas and Hezbollah) - rest of the world nah unless they are Islamists - ask yourself why the nations of the world aren't declaring war on Israel

It was always about land. How dare you turn it around and blame the Palestinians for staying. How can you not see the injustice? So we are supposed to give our land and walk away with nothing. Should we have left meals on our tables? You disgust me.

And it's not just the Palestinian land they're after but Lebanon too. I've seen videos of settlers reading their children books about the land in Lebanon and how it's not ready for them yet but it will be and how nice of a place it is. Of course it's about land and Oct 7 has been the best excuse for them to use to grab it.

BibiSuzanne · 09/10/2024 18:24

Also we didn't hate a religious group. The Nazis did. So just stop changing the narrative.

From someone who says Palestinians choose to die as martyrs
Did you see the list of the dead. It takes nine minutes to play in age order the first minute or so are all under one. Not sure they have that level of comprehension

OP I wouldn't be able to be friends with you anyone who chooses to be the person that looks the other way would not be someone I would choose in my circle.

I don't believe my fear of Islam is irrational.

Would you live in Iran, where women are under house arrest and forbidden from speaking or laughing in public?

You're confusing the religion and the government.

My dad was born in Iran and moved to the UK when the Iranian Revolution happened, because like a big majority of people, he didn't agree with the government's policies on basically anything. Doesn't mean he stopped practising his religious beliefs.

If it's about land, why then did you suggest the Palestinians were the ones to move? If you watch The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon had the fantastic idea of moving the promised land to the Mojave Desert, He would even put on a spread.

The post referred to suicide bombers.

I hear plenty of those, mostly on Mumsnet.

Are you all speaking with one voice? The post didn't say suicide bombers and was referring to the slaughter of Palestinians as though they were throwing themselves under bombs.

Given land ???!!! Israel were given land and it wasn’t enough. So they stole more and established illegal settlements. Destroyed communities and disenfranchised Palestinians.
