To have reservations about a friendship with a woman who refers to Israel's actions in Gaza as a genocide?

I like this woman a lot, but we have very differing world views, specifically her belief that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

We work at a university and were coming back from lunch together when she commented that she was pleased the protestors hadn't come back. I agreed, noting how nerve wracking it must have been for Jewish students on campus to run the gauntlet of pro-Palestinian / anti-Zionist posters in the encampment.

We'd been talking about the American election over lunch, and I thought we'd agreed that Kamala Harris was the better candidate for her views on climate change, if nothing else, but then my 'friend' commented on Biden/Harris sending arms "to support the genocide" and I was left kind of speechless.

Am I being unreasonable to feel unsure about continuing this friendship?

If you watching Israel murder scores of Palestinian children and women, blowing up schools, hospitals, churches and mosques does not amout to genocide to you, then you need to look deep inside yourself. Israel has been doing this for the past 76 years it has occupied Palestine and expanded even when the UN asked it to stop. If you were living in an open prison that is Gaza, would you not fight back against the apartheid regime that has occupied your land? The fact that Israel does not want a 2 state solution should tell you all there is to know about them.

Fight back? Is that what October 7th was to you?

Who did the people at music festival oppress? The woman who were raped, the children who were kidnapped and murdered?

Who have the thousands of Palestinian children oppressed?

No one presumably. Doesn't really answer my question though.

To answer your question, the people at the Nova festival were as innocent as the dead children of Palestine.

It's currently alleged genocide as it's under investigation. However Israel have been found guilty of Apartheid and there are open plans for ethnic cleansing.

A modest estimation of deaths in Gaza is over 40,000 and that includes thousands of children. Thousands of Palestinians are being held in Israeli prisons with no charge and there is evidence of torture and rape.

Don't be disingenuous, that's not a modest estimate, it's a wildly inflated estimate, that does not differentiate between combatants and civilians, provided by Hamas (hardly a neutral observer).

Meanwhile, what apartheid, Arabs hold positions in the Israeli government!

That's Afghanistan.

It's true that I mixed up women's rights in Afghanistan and Iran; in one they have no rights, in the other they have a few.

It's ironic you're calling people disengenuous. It's a modest estimate because the UN have estimated that thousands are buried under rubble.

As for who is Hamas, it doesn't seem as though Israel care given their genocidal intent. We all know this is about getting rid off the Palestinians either by death or by driving them into Egypt. Let's not pretend otherwise.

The Apartheid is in Palestine. It's been said for years that what the Israeli government has been doing in Palestine is Apartheid due to the way the Israeli settlers and Palestinians are treated. It was found by the ICJ in July that legally it's Apartheid.

Given that Israel killed more women and children than Misogyny last year, I don't think they should be shouting about feminism.

As if they're fighting a feminist war!

People like the OP are calling it “self defence” when the state of Israel kills some 20 times more innocent children, women and other civilians! So why is it “self defence” on behalf of one side, and “terrorism” on the other? Meanwhile one side have a vastly greater capacity for harm, have killed and displaced so many more people , continue to illegally occupy the others’ land, cut off their access to aid., Etc .
Why are some lives seen as more valuable than others?

I’m sorry OP that you’ve got so much hate in this post.
What Hamas have done to Israel is outrageous. Israel had every right to fight back. Israel gave civilians notice of these attacks on Gaza, allowing them to flee. Many chose not to, despite safe havens being offered up away from Gaza.
Hamas terrorists brought the deaths upon their people themselves. They chose to host their command centres in civilian hospitals.
People referencing the UN’s statement of genocide seemingly are unaware of the UN’s reputation when involved in the Israeli-Palestine conflict.
How people on here can be so anti-Semitic is terrifying. Just recently I attended a talk on the holocaust and the fear I witnessed around this modern day atrocity was heartbreaking. I stand whole heartedly with Israel and the Jewish community.

@Fullrecoveryispossible How kind of israel to give Gaza a notice to flee. Then bombed the hell out of them when they fled to the DESIGNATED SAFE HAVEN. Also why should Palestinians flee to another country? The whole reason for this 76 year situation is that Palestinians do not want to give up their land.
Do we watch the same news? Or are you tuned in to Hasbara channel.

This post is the equivalent of blaming a woman for wearing a short skirt .

Flee where??
What safe havens. The refugee camps they bombed.
