To have reservations about a friendship with a woman who refers to Israel's actions in Gaza as a genocide?

I like this woman a lot, but we have very differing world views, specifically her belief that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

We work at a university and were coming back from lunch together when she commented that she was pleased the protestors hadn't come back. I agreed, noting how nerve wracking it must have been for Jewish students on campus to run the gauntlet of pro-Palestinian / anti-Zionist posters in the encampment.

We'd been talking about the American election over lunch, and I thought we'd agreed that Kamala Harris was the better candidate for her views on climate change, if nothing else, but then my 'friend' commented on Biden/Harris sending arms "to support the genocide" and I was left kind of speechless.

Am I being unreasonable to feel unsure about continuing this friendship?

I'm much less tolerant of opposing views than I used to be. However my best friend and I are on total opposite ends of the spectrum on pretty much everything. She's incredibly right wing. But she comes from a different background and I understand some of her reasons for being that way. However we know when it's time to call it a night, or not to discuss politics after wine 😂

Same to you. Take your toxic views and keep them to yourself and keep yourself away from your ' friend'. You clearly have absolutely no intention of taking on anyone's views as you continue to push your own agenda. The voting speaks for itself.

I like my freedoms, and I like Western values such as equality, and freedom of speech.

Yet only for certain people because not all people are equal. You support perpetrators of Apartheid who have denied millions of people those freedoms.

It's still unacceptable to Israel and the West, and their substitute state seems more likely to be Islamic than secular, but it does not any longer support slaughter or expulsion of the Jewish population. You may say they still support this by their actions - I couldn't disagree. But why lie about what their charter says? If you are willing to say things you know to be untrue it throws doubt on everything else you say.

There isn’t any justification to keep sending bunker busting bombs prohibited for use by international law in urban areas to a government that has a been using every one of these bombs you already gave them all year on urban areas and brazenly says they have no intention of stopping.

Whether or not it is a genocide, it is definitely aiding and complicity in war crimes. That alone should be enough for Harris to object.

If thousands of people say you’re a criminal, it also doesn’t mean you’re a criminal.

Thousands of people like you saying that Israelis committing genocide doesn’t mean that they are committing genocide. They have to actually commit genocide.

Over the time that Israel has existed the population of the areas that you refer to as Palestine has increased by about 5 million people. This is a very odd situation for a genocide don’t you think? How can you explain it?

Secondly, Israel has massive military superiority over the Palestinians. They could if they wanted to wipe out the Palestinians in a month or less. Why haven’t people with a genocidal intend done this yet?

On top of that, why did the Israelis go to such great length to avoid killing civilians? Why do they drop leaflet in areas telling people that they’re going to bomb that area.

Why do they call the cell phones of people in the area? They’re going to bomb and tell them that they’re going to bomb that area?

Why do they provide medical care to injured Palestinians as I’m sure you know the architect of the terror attack on October 7 was treated for cancer in an Israeli hospital. Ironically, the surgeon who treated him had his nephew killed in the terror attacks.

Israel has also provided food and Other supplies for people in Gaza.

This also brings me to another point. If they were committing genocide, why are they only focusing on Gazza and leaving all the Westbank Palestinians alone?

What is the eventual plan for this genocide? Are there documents I can view such as those that existed in Germany? Are there concentration camps full of people being gassed daily?

And finally, what about the Arabs who make up 10% of the Israeli population? They have the same rights as Israelis and are treated just like any other citizen. These people if they moved south would be considered Palestinians so why Israeli happy to live with them why aren’t they throwing them out if they want to commit a genocide?

Nothing about the current situation supports the idea that there is a genocide happening. It’s a fantasy created by people who hate the existence of a Jewish state. I struggle to understand why there are people who hate this state but there are millions of them. It may be some misguided notion of oppress and oppressed, but it’s funny that it’s always the Jews who seem to be on the receiving end of this hate.

It may be good for the American economy though, they're not greatly disturbed by the slaughter of any foreigners. Even us if it came to it.
