To have reservations about a friendship with a woman who refers to Israel's actions in Gaza as a genocide?

I like this woman a lot, but we have very differing world views, specifically her belief that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

We work at a university and were coming back from lunch together when she commented that she was pleased the protestors hadn't come back. I agreed, noting how nerve wracking it must have been for Jewish students on campus to run the gauntlet of pro-Palestinian / anti-Zionist posters in the encampment.

We'd been talking about the American election over lunch, and I thought we'd agreed that Kamala Harris was the better candidate for her views on climate change, if nothing else, but then my 'friend' commented on Biden/Harris sending arms "to support the genocide" and I was left kind of speechless.

Am I being unreasonable to feel unsure about continuing this friendship?

I would not be friends with someone who used the word genocide to describe the targeting of Hamas and the civilian casualties that have happened.

It is not the same as happened in Rwanda for example.

It’s pretty shit ‘targeting’ that kills thousands of kids

Also:

”Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007 after a violent conflict with the rival Palestinian faction, Fatah. This takeover followed Hamas’ victory in the 2006 Palestinian Legislative Council elections, which led to tensions and clashes with Fatah, culminating in the Battle of Gaza. Since then, Hamas has maintained political and military control over Gaza, while Fatah governs the West Bank. The international community, including the United States and the European Union, does not recognize Hamas’ government in Gaza and supports the Palestinian Authority led by Fatah”

Is this a joke?

If somehow it isn’t, then you really need a history lesson!

“In 2005, Israel undertook a unilateral disengagement from the Gaza Strip, which involved withdrawing all Israeli security forces and dismantling 21 settlements in Gaza and four in the West Bank. This decision, led by then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, aimed to improve Israel’s security and international standing by reducing friction with the Palestinian population. Over 9,000 Israeli settlers were evicted, and the disengagement cost Israel approximately $2 billion.”

So Hamas exists in large part BECAUSE Israel gave back “occupied” territories!

I don't think many people actually know any history of the area. They just repeat what they've heard on social media 🙄

No, Russia is bombing the shit out of Ukraine, 12 million people are displaced internally and externally, and where are the international protests?

Protesting for what exactly? There is no impetus to protest for Ukraine in the UK as there little to no support for the Russias invasion within the international community. As a matter of foreign policy, the UK support Ukraine. This comment just shows your ignorance as to the purpose of the protests which I suppose you think are just a bunch of anti semetic terrorists having a party?

But in 2009 the UN still considered both Gaza and the West Bank occupied, there are illegal settlements in the West Bank, and Israel still don't recognise the Palestinian state

The UN is a disgrace!

Netanyahu’s speech there was powerful.

I wonder OP what words or phrases would be acceptable to you instead of Genocide.

Makes no difference. Palestinians were there, owned land etc. zionists had no right to massacre them.

So are you saying the UN are wrong, Gaza is completely unoccupied? There are no illegal settlements?

All this shit because of a made up book

Yup, or rather several takes on the same book. They can’t all be god’s chosen people … they being the various religions that is.

Why haven't Jordan and Egypt insisted on their lands been given back? Because its not their land, its Palestinian land and they, unlike Israel, accept that

So, just because the igf hasn't quite killed 2/3rds of population, it isn't attempted genocide?
Shall we return to definitions when that proportion is reached?
It's the principle, not numbers

Is your use of 'igf' deliberate or a typo? If deliberate, what is your intention?

@Toothpegs

"To protest whom, Putin? Our government supports Ukraine, who is there to petition to?"

Boycott Chinese goods, seek further sanctions against Iran, protest for greater Government support for Ukraine.

By that said because there are no Jews involved and it's Christian's killing Christians so no one cares. Much like Pakistan forcibly deporting 1 million fellow Muslim Afghans across the border to Afghanistan so no one cares.

Indeed, where’s the outrage for Muslim on Muslim violence?

Well there was no Israel either. That didn’t exist alongside the Ottoman Empire. Seems a bit strange to insist Palestine doesn’t exist when it was created by the same mandate that created Israel.

The West Bank and Gaza were park of land allocated to Palestine under the partition. I have no idea how Egypt and Jorden feel about Israel occupying them.

Can I check I’ve understood correctly “Look over there, whilst we kill them all, then STFU because they deserve it.”

Does it not seem a little odd that there is so little outrage at Pakistan's treatment of Afghan refugees? It's barely reported on.
