To have reservations about a friendship with a woman who refers to Israel's actions in Gaza as a genocide?

Oodiks · 07/10/2024 22:28

I like this woman a lot, but we have very differing world views, specifically her belief that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

We work at a university and were coming back from lunch together when she commented that she was pleased the protestors hadn't come back. I agreed, noting how nerve wracking it must have been for Jewish students on campus to run the gauntlet of pro-Palestinian / anti-Zionist posters in the encampment.

We'd been talking about the American election over lunch, and I thought we'd agreed that Kamala Harris was the better candidate for her views on climate change, if nothing else, but then my 'friend' commented on Biden/Harris sending arms "to support the genocide" and I was left kind of speechless.

Am I being unreasonable to feel unsure about continuing this friendship?

Israel should also be accountable for illegally occupying Palestinian land, that's also terrorism, also you can't compare Russia/Ukraine with Palestine as no one is bombing the shit out of Russia for their actions are they, their children can sleep safely in their beds, as they should be able to

No, Russia is bombing the shit out of Ukraine, 12 million people are displaced internally and externally, and where are the international protests?

I would not be friends with someone who used the word genocide to describe the targeting of Hamas and the civilian casualties that have happened.

It is not the same as happened in Rwanda for example.

Support for Hamas in Gaza increased after October 7 last year.

Palestinian poll shows a rise in Hamas support and close to 90% | AP News

How did they conduct the poll.
Because in a country that is rubble with air filled of carcinogenic asbestos...I wonder how someone managed to conduct a poll.
Was it at the hospitals that aren't there.
Or was it at the churches that no longer exist.
Maybe at the refugee centre that got set fire too.
Silly me, must have been at the paediatric ICU unit where the babies where left to rot and eaten by maggots.
Must be the old fashioned way... Door to door
Oops forgot to add there are NO DOORS because there are no house.
Would also Love to know how the poll was conducted

Do you have links/sources to share on this? I saw one study from the Pew Research Centre from last year that said Hamas enjoyed majority support in Gaza and the West Bank and another from the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research from this year that said much the same including that if an election was held Hamas would defeat the Fatah party.

If the Palestinian people genuinely don't support Hamas why aren't they working with Israel, or the international community to remove them? That would be an absolutely monumental step towards peace but from what I've read it seems that more Palestinians agree with Hamas and their views than don't.

This, thank you.

This, thank you.

Wake up
The Christians in Palestine have been killed and thrown out of their lands since the 1948 nakba.
Their was no hamas then.

BibiSuzanne · 08/10/2024 18:08

I cannot believe what I'm reading in here. Changing the narrative to Palestinians working with Israel to get rid of Hamas!!! Seriously. Hamas exists because of Israel. Because Israel wouldn't give back the occupied territories. Bloody hell.

What a completely sane question
At least you have sense.
It's funny

The problem is there are no journalists in Gaza so we can't speak to the Palestinians and absolutely anything can be said about them without rebuttal. 'Polls' such as this go towards justifying slaughtering civilians.

Really, not expecting such responses?

This, thank you.

So WHAT?! They’re being killed in their tens of thousands by ISRAEL, and their focus is supposed to be on political reform within Palestine?

Does Israeli’s hatred of Palestinians and Hamas justify October 7th? NO.

OhDearMuriel · 08/10/2024 18:27

@Oodiks
Two wrongs do not make a right, and there's no doubt that Israel is committing horrendous war crimes.

I think you and your friend would be better off avoiding each other.

To protest whom, Putin? Our government supports Ukraine, who is there to petition to?

The difference is the government IS supporting ukraine, they host Zelensky, they give them
money and arms. Ukraine is being supported and were given legal routes to safety.

They do have a clue, they're being disengenuous.

1dayatatime · 08/10/2024 18:42

@Toothpegs

"To protest whom, Putin? Our government supports Ukraine, who is there to petition to?"

Boycott Chinese goods, seek further sanctions against Iran, protest for greater Government support for Ukraine.

By that said because there are no Jews involved and it's Christian's killing Christians so no one cares. Much like Pakistan forcibly deporting 1 million fellow Muslim Afghans across the border to Afghanistan so no one cares.

So explain the rise in antisemitic attacks since October 7th?

Maybe you personally don’t hold all Jews responsible for Israel’s actions, but it’s clear others do and that should be a concern.

So what are you wishing for? That we in the west just support what’s happening in Gaza/Lebanon in order to protect Jews in the UK from retaliatory action? Look at what’s being visited upon Arabs there and understand how disproportionate your argument is.

OctoberOctopus · 08/10/2024 18:51

Vintagevixen · 07/10/2024 22:33

Yes I'd proceed with caution. I don't agree it's a genocide either, but those who do are fanatics. They won't listen to ANY other points of view.

This.

Many don't know the history on both sides.

They parrot soundbites from tic toc. Avoid.

Glitterybee · 08/10/2024 18:54

As an Irish person I will ALWAYS be pro Palestine

Britain invaded Ireland and then was instrumental in the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

Ever heard of the black & tans? Maybe educate yourself on what they done in Ireland before moving onto Palestine.

I think you’d be doing the person a favour by ditching them as a ‘friend’

Our government isn’t supporting and arming Russia- quite the opposite.
So what would we be protesting?
I don’t understand what you don’t understand about this.

Another tiresome argument just because the masses on here disagree with you.

YourLastNerve · 08/10/2024 19:01

Attacks on Jewish people, synagogues etc in the uk, as separate from anything around for eg a pro Israel march or protest, are clearly anti semitic.

Criticism of the State of Israel for genocide in Gaza/Palestinian territories? Not anti semitic.

Even if some actions are in response to those of Hamas/Hezbollah (who clearly are also guilty of atrocities) - two wrongs don't make a right. Neither side can be exonerated for their actions here by claiming its any form of measured or proportionate response.

Is this a joke?

If somehow it isn’t, then you really need a history lesson!

“In 2005, Israel undertook a unilateral disengagement from the Gaza Strip, which involved withdrawing all Israeli security forces and dismantling 21 settlements in Gaza and four in the West Bank. This decision, led by then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, aimed to improve Israel’s security and international standing by reducing friction with the Palestinian population. Over 9,000 Israeli settlers were evicted, and the disengagement cost Israel approximately $2 billion.”

So Hamas exists in large part BECAUSE Israel gave back “occupied” territories!
