How much do you need to earn for 3 kids?

Allthegoodnamesaregonegone · 07/10/2024 09:58

When you don’t live in London and have very average expenses?

for arguments sake, I googled and saw the average mortgage is £1400
average heating for 4/5 people is £200 a month (British Gas website)

assume no ‘bad debts’ and no private school

id love another kid, if possible, but I do see on here often on the cost of a third and that being a large factor, so I’d like to understand what is the amount people think you need to earn pre tax to live comfortably with 3.

good on you 🙏

not my cup of tea but certainly that shows you’ll be able to get an abroad holiday for your budget!

speedmop · 07/10/2024 18:42

ah and when they are teens, you absolutely don’t want them missing 3 days school op

speedmop · 07/10/2024 18:43

i really don’t think you should be pricing up your holiday on the basis of your teens missing school. They won’t want to and you won’t want them to.

speedmop · 07/10/2024 18:43

right dinner!

FeedingThem · 07/10/2024 18:47

We're on just under 50k combined with a singleton and twins. Neither of us drive so public transport costs. Holidays are with friends so very inexpensive. No foreign holidays for other reasons. I do buy lots of stuff on Vinted but as much as a preference as anything. We have a nice life, just not fancy. West Midlands, below market rent.

tbh I think 2 days one side of half term (pre y10 isn’t the end of the world) as long as the rest of their attendance is ok but accept that’s a judgement call.

ideally those wouldn’t be my hol destinations either would like warmer but to illustrate last min deals, those are some workable options for me, there are others if you want to spend more and works for summer hols too, but I’m a deal hunter.

We have 3 kids, 7 5 and 2. We earn 65k jointly before tax etc..mortgage is £900. We do OK but havent been abroad as a family only UK holidays 2x per year, but mainly because we have done bits to the house and can't fathom getting three on a plane 😂

LegoHouse274 · 07/10/2024 19:07

We are expecting DC3 imminently and earn about £50k combined. We obviously don't and won't have a lavish lifestyle but a nice enough one.

Upschittscreek1 · 07/10/2024 19:09

I feel like you already know the answer to this, you appear quite well off and quite intelligent. So OBVIOUS things are will you need a bigger house and car? you know how much your childrens expenses are nowso add those BUT how many children will be teenagers at the same time? teenage boys eat a lot! also teenagers clothes are much more expensive not just because they want labels but just because they are bigger. My friends son is really tall and was in mens size shoes by year 7 and his school shoes alone were really expensive. Also in secondary school they go on a lot if trips and they go abroad (your choice obvs) and those trips can be £700 plus. But you sound like you have a fair bit of cash and are just worried about if you'll still be able to afford nice holidays which I'm sure you will be able to.

Car no (im sure at some point it will need to be replaced but it can take 3 across in the back) house, probably could work but in the short term.

my first are only 2.5 years apart so they’ll be teens and at uni together

Kids get much more expensive as they get older, when they get to 14 they are basically adults.

I have neve felt so skint as I do now and I have 3 between 13 and 17. We bring home 7k per month after tax and pensions but our mortgage is 2k and we have one in private school plus they all have expensive hobbies.

How much are your fees for private?

i looked at them and then decided it was cost prohibitive as it was £3k a term.

6k per term. I only send my daughter as she was so badly bullied at state I didn't have much choice.

My older two are at state and fine there so I don't think private school is an essential ti have three kids!

That’s terrible for her, I was badly bullied too, it sucks! I hope she’s settled in well at her new school and the people are far more pleasant!

£3k a term?!

Our prep was £5.5k a term
secondary is £8.6k a term

Whereabouts do you live op?

I’d rather not say on the thread, not London and not the south. This was just one, the cheapest one, aside from some faith schools that are that much for the year, most were a lot more expensive

They were Islamic schools, they seem to be much cheaper than the Christian schools but are open to all faiths and perform equally well
