How far away are you from your parents?

Driving time wise?

Currently live abroad, but want to move back to be closer to my parents, now they’re getting a little older. We’ve seen a great job for Dh (my job is much easier to find in every area, Dh’s not so much) it’s 30 minutes drive from my parents, is this close enough? I was hoping to be close enough to just nip over when needed and for them too, is 30 minutes a bit far or average?

10 mins from my Dad & step mum, 30 from my Mum & her partner, 5 mins from FIL & his partner, 5 mins from MIL

Out of those, I see my Mum most

Howmanycatsistoomany · 06/10/2024 19:10

According to Google Maps, 605 miles, including the English Channel.
Not far enough.

ViciousCurrentBun · 06/10/2024 19:15

No longer with us but it was a four hour drive minimum. For DH his Father retired to Spain and MIL who is the only one still with us it’s three hours.

PonyPatter44 · 06/10/2024 19:17

I live just over an hours drive away from my mum, and 2 hours from Mr Pony's family. It's a real ball ache when it comes to helping out with aging parents, although we are both tied to our current location through work and there's no getting away from this.

AspirationalTallskinnylatte · 06/10/2024 19:18

6-7 hours depending on traffic, about 4 hours on public transport.

yeesh · 06/10/2024 19:18

We live in the town next to the city i grew up in, so we’re about 10 mins from my mum & about 20 from my dad. We both work in the city though so drive there most days. In-laws moved about an hour away for cheaper housing.

StressedQueen · 06/10/2024 19:20

About a 1 hour drive from my parents. Quite a bit further than I would like but we still find time to do things together on weekends. DH's mother is about a 5 minute drive but we hardly see anything of her 🙄

sunshineandshowers40 · 06/10/2024 19:20

2 miles- 10 minutes drive. 30 minutes sounds ok, if there won't be loads of traffic.

Sesma · 06/10/2024 19:22

Mine and DHs are dead, I'm old, but DS is about two and a half hours away from us

Femalefootyfan · 06/10/2024 19:32

Two and a half hours drive from my Mum, which is starting to concern me a little as she’s early 80’s and lives alone, although she has an excellent neighbour who is also a long term friend. I try to visit every 6 weeks or so for 2/3 days as she’s not really able to travel by train to us and she doesn’t drive. She’s pretty independent and reasonably healthy and financially has no worries.
We’re four hours drive from MIL who also lives alone. We visit her every 6-8 weeks for a couple of days at a time but worry less about her due to her having close family very close by.

SevernWonders · 06/10/2024 19:34

3 minute drive, 10 minute walk - I stop in on my way home from work most days to deliver anything needed / do bits and pieces around the house etc which is needed more and more due to age.

PFB lives a 15 minute drive away - visits once a week.

DH's parents - 8 hour drive, 1 hour 30 flight - see them every couple of months - very hard being so far away from them as they get frailer in their late 80s.

ncncncncncnchhh · 06/10/2024 19:37

Sadly about 8 or 9 hours from DF. I wish he hadn't moved.

AdeloreSmore · 06/10/2024 19:38

30 min drive from mine and 4 hour drive from the in laws. I know which feels less of a worry as they all approach 80!

ChairmanMeowww · 06/10/2024 19:39

No idea, my Mum put drugs before us and I've no idea if she's alive or where she lives, she took off one day. Dad was a waste of space and also no idea where he lives.

Auburngal · 06/10/2024 19:43

3-5 mins away

RickiRaccoon · 06/10/2024 19:45

I think 30 min is a good distance. We're 10 hours' drive from my parents and 3.5 hours from ILs. It makes it difficult.with small kids.

letiton · 06/10/2024 19:46

About 20 minutes by car and a 10 minute walk to DH's parents.

Strokethefurrywall · 06/10/2024 19:48

I'm 5000 miles away but if I were to ever move back I'd want to be walking distance. But that probably because I've been so far away for so long...

LivelyGoldOrca · 06/10/2024 19:49

7 hours

Spacecowboys · 06/10/2024 20:50

Less than a five minute walk from my parents. Was five minutes drive to in laws but they are deceased.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 07/10/2024 03:53

A ling way ... heaven abd earth

Pipsquiggle · 07/10/2024 04:19

If you want to 'pop' in, I would say 30 mins is the maximum driving time. If you want to 'pop' in multiple times per week, I would live closer.

I live 4 hours from my parents. My brother and sister live 1 hour away and 1.5 hours away respectively. There is never, ever any popping in, we plan our trips.

BeatsAntique · 07/10/2024 04:49

About 5,000 miles from mine, about 800 miles (12h drive) to one of my DP’s parents and about 1,300 miles (a day and a half’s drive) from the other in another direction!

Cobblersorchard · 07/10/2024 04:58

1.5hrs
Easy to go there and back in a day. I don’t want to be any closer really as I’d feel under pressure to visit more!

sanityisamyth · 07/10/2024 05:02

2 hours from my mother and 6 hours from my dad.
