To think this was disgraceful?

Yesterday while queuing in a supermarket behind me two grandparents were with their grown up daughter and small Granddaughter around 6 . Every other word was the F word in front of the child and the grandmother answered her phone and was becoming more irate calling whoever it was on the end of the line a C* repeatedly. In front of her Granddaughter ! I was just cringing inside and thankful I didn't have my Grandchildren with me as they were not the sort of people you could politely ask to moderate their language.

I think it's disgusting to use that sort of language in public and especially in front of small ones . Ok , I appreciate we can all slip up occasionally, I've done it myself , but you could tell this was part of their normal everyday conversation. When did it become the norm to use the C word so casually and in front of small children? It just made my stomach churn 🤢🤮

Would you be happy for little children to hear racist words in the supermarket? Ableist words? Or is it just misogynistic swearing you're OK with?
This is the crux isn't it? When/where does offensive language need to be unacceptable?

Stop ear wiggng other peoples conversations and you won't be offended.

It was so loud and right behind me so I didn't have much choice but to listen to it .

They really don't think they are doing anything wrong.

I also think that for many people it's so deeply entrenched that they don't even realise they're doing it. Every single sentence is about going to the fucking shop to buy fucking bread for the fucking sandwiches and whether to have fucking cheese or fucking ham.

They’re just words. 🤷🏼‍♀️

That you use in certain situations/places and not others

Lidl methinks

How snobby!

Fail at what? I swear a lot. A lot. I still hold a professional job where I don’t swear at all.

Because you know when and where to use or not to use.

If it's normalised with children in public, how do they learn that?

Bignanna · 06/10/2024 13:40

Yet these words are freely used on Mumsnet, and though children probably don’t visit this site, a lot of it is unnecessary.

How true though and I was spot on. Rather be a snob than go into Lidl

Magicpaintbrush · 06/10/2024 13:46

I totally agree OP - I despise people who swear infront of young children, it's horrible. We all swear, but there's no need to do it infront of little kids. It's terrible parenting. I think maybe less bad infront of teens because the ship has sailed by then, but normalising swearing infront of four year olds is horrible. I saw a family with pre school age little girls, 3 or 4 years old, outside Dobbies the other week and the dad was 'fucking this, fucking that', both kids were crying, mum said nothing (maybe she was intimidated by him or maybe she didn't care, couldn't tell). I just thought what a shit father. And there's no point saying anything because you know full well it would lead to a load more angry swearing infront of the children. Horrible.

AHFBridport · 06/10/2024 13:46

If you're asking people whether they want fucking cheese or fucking ham in their cunt of a sandwich, what do you say when you're genuinely outraged/upset/frustrated?

I agree with PP that it's not about the swearing per se but about the total lack of social awareness and appropriateness some people have, and which their kids will also grow up without. And that puts them at a disadvantage in life.

I’m saying words have as much or as little power as you choose to give them. Words are not inherently vile or disgusting. And I think words like stupid or ugly are far worse than cunt or fuck.

Absolutely this.

I too can think of far far worse words than Cunt or Fuck.

I can’t agree with that. They’re aggressive words, they’re anti social and shouldn’t be thought of as the norm around young children. These are not words you want to teach young children or to hear them come out of young mouths, surely?

Maray1967 · 06/10/2024 13:56

ginasevern · 06/10/2024 12:58

Tell that to a prospective employer or try talking to an NHS worker or the police like it. I don't think it would end well - for you I mean.

Yes, this is the huge consequence of bringing up children to think that swearing is normal.

Both of mine can swear with the best of them - but they know the rules. Ok With mates- but not teachers, grandparents, employers, mates’ parents or police etc, and not in hostility against someone.

If a five year old hears that language all the time, that child’s future is significantly disadvantaged because they don’t know how to speak appropriately to people.

A tugs game? 😕

It's a common phrase here. When you watch rugby it is a high octane physical game, injuries are common.

VoteLabour · 06/10/2024 14:01

I went to Lidl yesterday and the people in the queue were pleasant and chatty.
I also went to Waitrose but nobody spoke to me there. Both in the same town.

I didn't hear any swearing.

If you never shop there, how do you know what it’s like? I shop in different supermarkets, Lidl is the same as any other, just good value.

Just to elaborate.
Soccer a gentleman's game played by thugs.

And GAA a thugs game played by thugs ,🤣
