You can use it without caring if they have it or not or believing they ‘need’ it. These arguments are all so desperate.

Not desperate at all. Merely highlighting the lack of thought or understanding on Labour's part. They have had years in opposition to research these ideas yet didn't even know that they would need to exempt state boarding schools!

Applebutt3r · 06/10/2024 09:03

Any child managing in a mainstream private school does not need an EHCP.

That sounds a lot like gatekeeping to me.

The article in my OP is, as of 9am on Sunday, the most viewed on the Guardian website, so that seems to suggest that actually a lot of people DO care, one way or another.

You tried to infer something that isn’t there.

And only the tiny percentage of the 7% paying private that won’t be able to afford the increase care.

Nobody else does.

Why can’t MN make a private education section and move all these threads on VAT.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/10/2024 09:07

Applebutt3r · 06/10/2024 08:50

It really isn’t. Very few care. And OP is trying to whip up a suggestion that it won’t happen which isn’t there .

Newspaper article is about dates re it happening- January or September.

I defy anybody to find that interesting.

Any thread that gets to 9 pages and going up surely implies that the subject matter is interesting to posters? How can it not.

We had kids at private schools but thankfully all through now. I don’t honestly think we could have afforded 3 x the vat and I find these discussions interesting from a slightly distanced stance. I really really hope that it doesn’t go ahead for the people who are in the position we would have been in.

And I like reading these threads, the more the merrier as far as I’m concerned.

Didimum · 06/10/2024 09:08

glasslightly · 06/10/2024 08:57

is this the standard of thinking/ critical analysis we can expect if all our kids are educated in now oversubscribed state schools ?

for what it’s worth I think private schools should ultimately pay VAT, but you don’t, no matter what political party you are, mess with children’s education. So you introduce it with proper notice, clarity on SEN impact, time for impacted local authorities to prepare and on a graduated basis.

it terrifies me that we as a nation seem to have fallen either for the politics of envy or for the Brexit style - do this and you’ll have thousands of new teachers. Remember how that worked for the NHS?

My belief in the policy does not equate to belief to how and when the policy is implemented. If this had been a genuine thread into the logistics of its Implementation then that would have been an entirely different thread. Except of course it has turned into yet another debate of the thing in the first place.

is this the standard of thinking/ critical analysis we can expect if all our kids are educated in now oversubscribed state schools ?

The belief that equality in education equates to better education for all and therefore benefits all of society? Then yes, I hope so!

The birth rate has been falling off a cliff edge since 2018 (at least) – state school oversubscription is quickly easing and will continue to.

Then scroll past and don't engage

Agree, it is always amusing what people deem other people will or will not find interesting.

This site is packed with information useless to me but I am glad people have the space to post it

Why not just hide it? It’s clear what the thread is about

Applebutt3r · 06/10/2024 08:40

Well numbers are dropping in applications for grammar and the vast majority couldn’t care less so crack on. Not everybody wants single sex, pressured education for their kids.

"Single sex"? Er not all grammars are single sex.

"Pressurised" or just suitable?

If you live in Kent then grammar schools are a big deal. But obviously Kent is only one county, and we all know you couldn't give a stuff about the minority. So I'll "crack on" but let's hope we don't see more threads about not getting into a good state school.

Because the fact our new government is floundering with it's shiny headline grabbing policy is extremely newsworthy. If you can't see that the lack of critical thinking over this affects us all - whether we are financially affected or not - then that's your choice. Scroll by.

But true.

Not floundering at all. Dates are being discussed.

Because Phillipson and Labour didn't bother to look at the logistics of implementation and now teachers unions amongst others are calling for it to be paused. That is floundering

Well conserving 90% of schools are rated good and above that’s not likely and let’s face it MN is a middle class Londoncentric forum with private aspiring parents. Not really reflective of uk society as a whole so I don’t think we should lose any sleep if there were.

Choosing an alternative date out of 2 isn’t floundering. Floundering is what we saw on a daily basis by the past Tory governments .

Ah yes the thorough and robust Ofsted grading system. Not flawed in any way is it?

Lol, ignore and scroll is the best option for something you are not interested in. It’s pretty simple - not directed at you by the way

Floundering is announcing it for Sept.25, then pulling it to Jan 25 and now reconsidering Sept 25 because quite simply you hadn't bothered to understand the complexities of what you are trying to do. Floundering is having teaching union telling you to stop, it is having accountancy firms that your maths doesn't add it. It is having diplomatic rows with France and Germany over the policy etc etc etc

Quite - I actually think they rub their hands with glee the moment the words "private school" and "VAT" appear.

Ah but you have the moral high ground with your virtue signalling don't you? If you are so concerned with state education then do a voluntary tax contribution to HMRC via direct debit.
