AirBnb not cleaned - AirCover experiences?

Hi
i have arrived at an AirBnb and it is not cleaned from previous guests - think unmade beds, wet dirty towels everywhere, stuff in sink, no sign of the “welcome goodies” referred to.
I immediately contacted host with pics and they apologised and said the cleaner would be there soon to sort it out and “work around me”. I have 3 kids 5 and under to get to bed including an overtired baby going mental now.

I hadn’t got as far as thinking about resolution, we just need somewhere to sleep tonight but the host said “I’m so sorry and we will offer you 10% off your next stay”.

AIBU? My next stay?! This area is a tourist spot but I am here for a specific reason not likely to come back. And 10% feels very little for this inconvenience?

I calmly explain that didn’t sound suitable to me but left it there. AIBU? Should I try to resolve this directly or via Airbnb, does anyone have experience of this? In my mind having this first night refunded is more like what I had in mind.

That's a really difficult start to a holiday. Especially with kids.

I think you're supposed to call Airbnb if an issue like that arises, as they often have alternative holiday places. You've been unlucky-I've done a ton of Airbnb and never had an issue.

I'd definitely expect a refund on the first night!
Personally I always go via Airbnb or the platform but if they proactively offer some cash then fine. But otherwise I prefer it all above board in the app so I can use them for additional leverage

That is such a one star service. Hence why air bnb are rubbish.

You say this like air BnB is a big corporate running all the sites. Air BnB is merely a platform like booking.com that enables individuals to list their properties.
The vast majority are excellent, but like anything there will be a few poor ones. Equally there are poor guests I had some turn up 2 hours early and then act very entitled when I was still cleaning when they arrived.
OP give an honest review and be honest about your stars. It will contribute to their rating and if there average drops below 4.8 they will loose their superhost status.

We had a bad experience with booking.com that really put me off. I feel much safer with air b and b and the review system is usually pretty accurate in my opinion. We always go for high ratings consistently and have never been let down. Booking. Com feels a bit more random

I've had too many issues with Airbnb, I won't use them plus there's the issue with using buildings that should have permanent residents. I only use booking.com for hotels and proper b&b's as in ones that are mini hotels basically.

Uncleaned, no towels, no power, heating not working, but worst of cancelling long standing bookings 2 weeks out when it's too late to find anything else and flights paid for. Airbnb central office are useless saying it's the hosts fault, yes but how do you enforce them to behave reasonably

Mrsgreen100 · 11/01/2025 18:50

Sounds like the cleaning person let them down
as a host I would be mortified and treating you to a dinner out and refunding the whole stay or at least one night and cleaning fee

doneandone · 12/01/2025 10:35

Did you come to an agreeable resolution op?

Caroparo52 · 20/06/2025 17:45

Airbnb are just an advertising and booking platform. They do not care inspect the properties. Sounds like a genuine mistake but do not accept 10% off next visit. You should ask for 1 night and cleaning fee reduvmction minimum.
