AiBU to detest a raffle?

They're always won by the person who can afford shitloads of tickets (or worse, by shear luck), by the people who could just walk out and buy the booty anyway? Am always sat there like a chump, having scraped the cash together.

I know. Tell me I'm over-reacting! I'm in my fifty- second year and counting down the things I suddenly have zero tolerance for. And it's for charity. (Hard hat donned.)

Better than a raffle.... a tombola! No waiting to find ot if you've won. Love a good Tombola. The spin of the drum. The picking of the folded up tickets....

Oh the baking-yes!
The last time I did it for my dcs school, it cost me a fortune and took quite a long time. Only for me to rock up to school and see my bins being sold for 5 pence each!
I actually said us that all you are charging?
That was the last time I baked for the school.

5p is an insult... we do 50p for a simple bun, up to £2 for the fanciest! The simple stuff often sells quickest

I love tombola's too.
When I was in primary school, I won a bottle of Baby Cham in a tombola. They let me have it too (was in the 80s) 😅

I used to have to run large raffles. They made good money and some of the prizes were really good.

One thing I used to do occasionally, (which is technically fraud) was rig it so the people who were nicest to me or most deserving won. I'd sell them at the start of a concert, draw in the interval and get the mayor to announce at the end, then give out the prizes on their way out.

I didn't do it every time and I never did it to benefit mates or myself- I promise! But if someone wasrmean or rude, their tickets fell into the bin. And the lovely lady who scraped all her coppers together to buy a strip...won that luxury hamper fair and square by pure chance 👌

Sethera · 03/10/2024 18:49

I don't buy a ticket unless I genuinely want the prize. It sometimes miffs ticket sellers if I point out that I have no use for a giant teddy bear, spa day voucher or giant bag of Haribo sweets.

gototu · 06/10/2024 18:53

Wow, so many great raffle stories- who knew? @RamsaySnowsSausage, you seem like my kind of raffle-seller.

The only raffle I've ever won in my whole life was an Easter egg at school when I was 11. I reckon the only reason I won was because I was off that day so my unlucky aura wasn't present 😆

@gototu i love a raffle but I'm fairly lucky too.

Maybe try being positive and your luck may change 😁

ahemfem · 08/10/2024 18:35

If you're scraping the cash together for a raffle you shouldn't be entering your financial priorities should be elsewhere

Desmodici · 08/10/2024 18:56

I'm 48. I've only ever won one raffle.
I won a bottle of wine.

It was alcohol free. 🤣

gototu · 08/10/2024 20:56

@Desmodici feeling slightly more positive now I've met someone more unlucky than me😁

I read that to mean actual cash OP is carrying.

SweetnsourNZ · 09/10/2024 00:06

I remember in the 80s kids winning bottles of wine in the school galas spinning Jenny. No one batted an eyelid. Now we can't have alcohol on school grounds.

They used to do that at my kids' school as well. I only made cakes for them once, when I saw how cheaply they were selling them.

I thought this was going to be about Raffles Hotel in Singapore

sorrythetruthhurts · 09/10/2024 01:39

I feel like I have the most luck at raffles when I buy a few tickets in batches, as in you buy a few...go away....go back later once a bunch more numbers have been sold and buy a few more. I know it's statistically still the same but for some reason seems to work better for me.
