To ask if you are still avoiding covid?

I know it’s everywhere but are people still avoiding seeing friends / family if they know it’s definitely covid? Or is no one worried anymore?
I feel like I wouldn’t want to put myself in the line of fire knowingly as it’s made me bed bound twice - not seriously ill or anything but like a flu - but I don’t know if I’m over the top about it given that it’s now just everywhere in the community anyway.

@TeenLifeMum careful there, your privilege is showing. £12 is a big amount to some (a lot of) people, especially those who might need to take unpaid days off if they're sick.

Oh fuck off - I’ve not even bought one, just saying they are available as a previous poster claimed they weren’t as available as covid. I think they’re the same price. You’ve absolutely no clue about my financial position to claim I have privilege! I also know you can spend £100k on a car - doesn’t mean I can afford one.

God, people really want a fight don’t they?! I currently have a nasty virus presenting like covid but haven’t tested. I don’t see the point of wasting money. I know I’m ill and I know I’m contagious.

Daisy03 · 02/10/2024 15:04

Yep, having chemotherapy at the moment so will try to take precautions to avoid wherever possible

OrdsallChord · 02/10/2024 15:05

TeenLifeMum · 02/10/2024 15:01

Erm… it’s quite clear surely? The previous poster in the thread commented flu tests aren’t as available as covid and I was stating that’s not the case as that was false information. Covid and flu are very similar protocols in a hospital setting. Just felt that was useful information for people rather than looking for an argument.

It wasn't clear, no, as you replied to my post about there being no such thing as real flu and the likelihood of transmission. But thank you for clarifying. I also hope it will be useful information.

@Growlybear83 I'm sorry but when it costs so much to stay home, I'm going in to work.

Me too. Staying home with a sniffle won't pay my bills.

For me covid is a high temp over 38 degrees and no energy to walk to the loo (which is just an en-suite), if it was a “sniffle” I’d be in work. My sick record is low and I can even work from home, but this has floored me.

itwasnevermine · 02/10/2024 15:09

TeenLifeMum · 02/10/2024 14:42

I currently have a bad virus which feels similar to when I had covid in 2022. It’s a cold plus flu symptoms. I was on a work from home day yesterday and by 1.30pm I couldn’t work. My temp was over 38 and I couldn’t read my screen. I’ve been bed bound with no appetite. I feel totally floored by it. This might not be covid but whatever it is, I won’t be spreading the germs in the same way I’d be cautious with a sickness bug. Totally understand some people don’t get sick pay but I genuinely cannot work, I can barely walk to the en-suite for the loo and even with the ability to wfh, I’ve got no ability to focus enough to be effective.

If I can go out of bed, I can get to the office. I'm paid that way.

You replied to someone else and I joined the thread you created by doing that. Apologies for confusing you. I didn’t even attack you or say anything negative. No idea why your responses are so negative.

that's really terrible for you and I do feel sorry for you. it must be awful. But that is not the case for most now, and I am afraid the great majority of the working population cannot and will not change their actions on the off chance they come across someone who very unfortunately reacts to covid like you. If only there was a way to help you get through it easier...

bostonchamps · 02/10/2024 15:14

@TeenLifeMum I've just checked for you, and Covid tests in Waitrose (so the nicer end of Covid tests Wink) are £2.10. I've done that search via the app, and I also searched for flu tests and they don't have any where I am, which is quite central London so not exactly out in the stock with limited stock. That's not fighting you, that's just correcting you. HTH.

Thindog · 02/10/2024 15:17

Just had it last week. Never felt so ill for two days, still testing positive a week later! No sense of smell or taste still
I have had many colds and flu but this is really a very nasty virus. Not just a cold. Avoid if possible.

I agree and have 3 dc who have had colds of varying degrees since they went back to school. I think it’s unreasonable to expect people with mild symptoms to isolate but it’s also annoying when people describe it as a sniffle. Even dd1 was off school a day and she usually struggles on through.

I don’t test but I am pretty sure I had it last year. Yep, it was grim. Coincided with a 3 day conference. Just got through hour by hour. Have never looked forward to the weekend so much 🤣

Nannyfannybanny · 02/10/2024 17:30

Oddly enough,my GS was coming to stay tomorrow DD just rang to warn me they're not well. It's one thing being outside, another quicky popping in a shop, another being at very close quarters with someone definitely poorly. A lot of people have had COVID asymptomatically. I know I haven't because Im in a COVID trial at queen Mary's university, have been for 4.5 years and sent blood tests off.

YourMommaWasASnowblower · 02/10/2024 18:49

I just assume people have colds now, rather than covid. But I still avoid them if I can. I don’t want to willingly catch any bug. I hate coughs and colds.

HIVpos · 03/10/2024 00:55

Dotjones · 02/10/2024 13:41

Yes I would try to avoid catching Covid and do my best to avoid passing it on. Same as I've always done with colds, flu and other illnesses that might spread easily. It's basic human decency to take precautions to avoid infecting other people.

Next thing people will be saying HIV isn't a death sentence anymore so it doesn't matter if you don't tell a partner you've got it before you have unprotected sex, they'd just need to take a bit of medication each day if they contract it from you.

This isn’t a good comparison since the vast majority of people in the UK who are living with HIV are on effective medication and are unable to pass the virus on to their partners - whether they chose to tell them or not

DiscoBeat · 03/10/2024 01:06

Yes I would avoid it and would also stay at home if I got it. I tested today actually (negative).

DragonGypsyDoris · 03/10/2024 10:58

FasterMichelin · 02/10/2024 13:23

I work in healthcare; it's rife at the moment.

People needing to live a normal life is also rife, and must be balanced with panic about covid.

Tel12 · 03/10/2024 10:59

Yes definitely.

BlueySchmooey · 03/10/2024 11:20

The panic by some to ignore the impact of covid or be post-covid must be balanced with reality.

BlueySchmooey · 03/10/2024 11:21

Sorry that was to @DragonGypsyDoris

IcedPurple · 03/10/2024 11:47

I wasn't worried about getting Covid 4 years ago, so I'm certainly not worried now.
