To ask if you are still avoiding covid?

I know it’s everywhere but are people still avoiding seeing friends / family if they know it’s definitely covid? Or is no one worried anymore?
I feel like I wouldn’t want to put myself in the line of fire knowingly as it’s made me bed bound twice - not seriously ill or anything but like a flu - but I don’t know if I’m over the top about it given that it’s now just everywhere in the community anyway.

FFS

yes, we are still avoiding covid and anyone who knowingly exposes others to covid or any other serious infectious disease is an asshole.

some of us have vulnerable household members.

Some of us turned out to be especially sensitive ourselves, even when not predicted. I’m 5 months in and still not fully recovered. I had an oxygen monitor at home because of DD’s asthma and it’s why I got to stay home watching my o2 sats hover just above the level needing to be admitted. I spent 3 weeks barely able to sit up in bed.

I agree. So sorry about you having long Covid. It's terrible.

SummerSnowstorm · 02/10/2024 01:54

I'm avoiding it if possible. Though also avoid any bad cough/cold/sickness bug etc in the same way.

HeliotropePJs · 02/10/2024 01:55

I avoid any contagious illness, if I can. I don't know if I've had Covid, yet, but I'd rather not expose myself unnecessarily, same as I avoid the flu and even colds unless there's a very good reason to risk catching it.

Tangwystl · 02/10/2024 02:04

Catsmere, I got six boxes of five tests on Amazon for $80 a little while ago

coxesorangepippin · 02/10/2024 02:08

I never think about it

smooththecat · 02/10/2024 02:10

I feel really fucked off if people risk making me ill, Covid or no, I don’t want to catch your shit and lose a week or so.

I don't really know anyone who tests for it anymore so I (and they) wouldn't have a clue if they had Covid.

Also, even if I did test, I have to go to work with it if I'm well enough.

I have it atm, I really only tested out of curiosity as otherwise I would have just thought it was a very bad cold, it doesn’t feel like when I had covid back in 2021. I don’t really know many people who test now. If we didn’t have any tests in the house to catch my eye I wouldn’t have thought to go and get any.

I had to check if my work has any policies, we don’t any more but it feels a bit weird to think of going in to work when I know I have it! Not an issue at the moment tho because I’m too rough to work anyway. But I think a lot of places where I live basically say it’s fine to come in if you feel well enough.

I do feel bad tho - I flew to London, went to lots of crowded places including the tube, restaurants, and a concert, then flew back so was then in a busy airport and a tiny plane. I didn’t start showing any symptoms of anything until the third day of my trip and I didn’t know it was Covid until I got home but I think I must have had it the whole time and so may well have passed it on. But I just had no idea. I haven’t even heard anyone mention Covid in ages where I live, I just don’t think it’s on people’s radar anymore.

Thanks! I shall get my next boxes online. Only bought this one in a hurry because of hearing Mum had it and needing to check pronto (and of course the one I had at home expired long ago).

QOD · 02/10/2024 02:31

Yeah and I’m having major surgery in January so am isolating from 27/12 as I’m not risking Covid or a cold or flu as it all goes to my chest

Birdscratch · 02/10/2024 02:38

JC03745 · 01/10/2024 23:59

No- I wouldn't be seeing family/friends if I knew I had covid! Same if I had a cold/flu, D&V or any other contagious illness!

Surely that is common sense, whether the other person is vulnerable or not, to not see people when ill???

I thought it was common courtesy to avoid close contact with other people when you know you’re ill. It seems that for some people, like regular handwashing, it was a concept they only became aware of during lock down and they’ve quickly forgotten all about it.

SquigglePigs · 02/10/2024 07:11

We do our best to avoid it but with DD at school there's only so much you can do.

My DDad is still ill 2 years later from long covid and covid put my DMum in hospital over the summer. Plus I'm also vulnerable so I'm quite wary of it.

I'm not hiding though. Life still needs living.

Overthebow · 02/10/2024 07:14

We don’t test anymore or know anyone that does, so I wouldn’t avoid friends because of covid as I wouldn’t know if they had it, but I do and always have done avoid friends who are properly unwell. Not talking about a sniffle but full blown cold.

OrdsallChord · 02/10/2024 07:17

The issue doesn't arise in my life. Most people I know aren't testing, and the one who is would need to be ill and therefore wouldn't come out anyway.

Willyoujustbequiet · 02/10/2024 07:20

AllAboutNiamh · 02/10/2024 00:02

MN is bizarre in that it has a little pocket of people that still fret about Covid almost 5 years on, and appear to test still.

In RL, most people have gladly consigned it to memory.

No. Real life includes vulnerable and disabled people who are still very much affected.

It must be nice to have the privilege to be so dismissive.

SummerScarf · 02/10/2024 07:21

I have covid for the third time at present. So far it’s not so bad as the first two but I’m still knocked out and not really able to get out of bed. I live alone so I’m not seeing anyone but even if I feel better I’ll isolate for a few days.

I don’t do anything to avoid catching it (other than trying not to get too close to visibly sick people) but I did test. I work in reasonably close quarters with hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people in an average week and many or most of them are elderly or otherwise vulnerable, so I and my colleagues do test when we have cold or flu type symptoms, and we work from home or take sick leave rather than spreading it.

MovingTooFast121 · 02/10/2024 07:23

I’m not going out of my way to
see anyone who is unwell with anything.

rzb · 02/10/2024 07:32

I'm unsuccessfully trying to avoid it. I'm more successfully trying to limit how far I spread it when I have it.

I have children in schools, so with the current focus on attendance, it's highly likely that my kids will get covid whenever it's in the classroom, and that I will also get it.

When I had covid recently, I ensured I'd had a couple of clear tests before returning to the office the following week. My team can work remotely pretty much as effectively as they can in the office, but individually we're less effective when ill.

As it's relatively easy for me to take steps to limit spreading illnesses, I do so, but I appreciate this isn't the case for everyone.

Funnywonder · 02/10/2024 07:34

We are very conscious of Covid as my son is immunosuppressed due to his medication (which is permanent.) So we do test as he is eligible for anti virals. But we have always been careful, even before Covid and before DS2 was diagnosed. We have generally tried not to pass on our viruses where possible and would never have been too happy if someone turned up for a visit coughing and spluttering. DP has cough variant asthma and colds and other upper respiratory tract viruses have a tendency to move into his chest. If we both catch the same thing, I'm over it in a few days, whereas he is still coughing weeks later. Obviously you can't avoid every bug, but you can be sensible.

It's not that Mumsnet is 'bizarre' @AllAboutNiamh, it's just that some people have been dealt a shit hand. Lucky you being able to forget all about Covid. And not having to give a hoot about anyone else. Must be great👍

Princessfluffy · 02/10/2024 07:53

I had it last month. I cancelled everything in my diary until after I had tested negative again. It was very annoying as there were classes I had paid for and events I'd bought tickets for plus I was unable to help a friend who had had surgery or go to the dentists.

It's not something I want to pass around though.

KnottedTwine · 02/10/2024 07:54

Well I wouldn't know "it's definitely covid" as I don't have any tests and am not planning on buying any. I wouldn't go out of my way to infect friends or family if I was unwell whatever the ilness. Covid isn't being treated any different in that respect.

Sallyingon · 02/10/2024 08:20

I've got COVID at the moment. It's awful. It's my third time having it and I really don't want it again. I am thinking to pay privately for a vaccination as I won't qualify for one.

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 02/10/2024 08:22

I’m due to visit my elderly aunt in her care home tomorrow so I’m going to test tonight, just in case.

MouseofCommons · 02/10/2024 08:25

Yes. I've had it twice in 18 months and it's hugely disruptive.
I've got something nice coming up so I'm avoiding indoor gym and busier shops for a few days in the run up.

ooooohnoooooo · 02/10/2024 08:35

I avoid it if I can. Avoid Ill people generally. Wear a mask in public transport.

Will have the covid and flu jabs again soon. Take vitamin D

Low immune system so manage risks as much as I can.

I have a close friend with long covid. It's devastating. A healthy active woman now a shell of her former self. Absolutely heartbreaking. I'll avoid that risk as much as I can.

Peonies12 · 02/10/2024 08:38

I don’t know anyone who tests anyway? You can’t avoid getting sick unless you never leave the house. It’s part of life like colds and flu.
