Dog came to our house viewing

Memberberry · 01/10/2024 20:21

Our estate agent brought a potential buyer round to view our house today who turned up with their dog. I saw them on the front door ring camera carry it in to our house but when I checked the back garden camera I could see it walking on our carpet!

We have a 5 year old and a 5 month old and it walked all over where the boys play (luckily most of their things were put away for the visit) and the estate agent knows this.

The dog also was carried into their bedroom and held above our baby’s cot.

if this hadn’t annoyed me enough when asked about it the estate agent lied and said the dog was carried the whole time. When I told her we can see it on the ring she said she’d make a note that no pets would be allowed on future viewings and that’s it ok as the dog didn’t go to the toilet in our garden.

I don’t think I’m being unreasonable but just wanted to gauge opinions before I speak to the agent properly tomorrow and whether that’s normal behaviour or is as bizarre as I think it is.

I can’t wait until this lunacy of taking pets everywhere ends.

Yeah I think some people don’t realise that a lot of people are grossed out by dogs and they’re the ones calling the OP OTT or voting YABU.

People tolerate dogs in parks or even coffee shops and trains or whatever, but home is usually someone’s safe space where they have certain expectations of being able to control the environment and feel completely comfortable.

Tbh I’d probably bring the steamer out and give the carpets and furniture a steam clean if that happened to me 😅 and I don’t care who thinks that crazy. We get told we need to accept dogs everywhere. I’ve seen them increasingly in trains, gyms, libraries, cafes, restaurants, theatres etc and now we are expected to suck it up when they’re in our home? Heck no.

Even some dog owners find all this objectionable

HighHeelsOnCobblestones · 02/10/2024 00:56

Absolutely unacceptable. My son is severely allergic. It's bad enough there's so many public places we can't go anymore, the one place he should be safe is his own home! It doesn't matter how small the dog is nor does it matter if it's carried; dog allergens are present in fur/skin/saliva and are airborne. He's had severe reactions without even touching a dog or its fur. I'd be furious with the agent for lying, we'd need to know. I'd be finding a new agent.

Ger1atricMillennial · 02/10/2024 01:12

Agree with others both on the dog front and on the EA lying to you.

Dog could have been tied up outside for 15 mins.

So disrespectful and would really wind me up. I’m shocked there’s currently 13% who have voted you are being unreasonable!! Who are these people 😂

OP didn't tell the estate agent that she didn't want pets along for house viewings, so it's on her.

If you have stipulations you need to use your words.

Does the OP also need to stipulate people aren't allowed to smoke in the house? Have a bath? Light it on fire? Have sex in their bed?

Common bloody sense should still matter.
You shouldn't have to tell anyone not to bring a dog in your house uninvited.

FiveShelties · 02/10/2024 01:25

Over the years I have moved 11 times and always had a dog. It has never occurred to me to take a dog to view a property and would be really annoyed if anyone came to view my home with their dog.

RedRobyn2021 · 02/10/2024 01:26

I was an estate agent for 10 years and find it crazy someone would turn up with a dog for a viewing in the first place, definitely wouldn't have allowed them in the house with the dog. I also have a dog.

RedRobyn2021 · 02/10/2024 01:27

@sorrythetruthhurts

lol this is ridiculous

KRealLife · 02/10/2024 01:31

I'd be really cross too.

I think you'll get dog lovers coming on the thread saying yabu, but I for one would be as annoyed as you or more. I'd give notice to the agent and use a better one

Even dog lovers must be aware of the health risks if anyone living in the home has a severe dog allergy. It's insanity to take one into someone's home without checking.

I'm a dog lover and I don't think this is acceptable. I doubt many people think it is, dog lovers or not.

Cherrysoup · 02/10/2024 07:17

Speak to the boss at the agency. The lying would wind me right up. wtf is wrong that people have to bring their dog to a house viewing? That’s a first for me!

AutumnTimeForCosy24 · 01/10/2024 23:04

it's an odd thing to do, just turn up with your dog, but given it's a handbag dog, not a Newfoundland they probably don't think of it the same way.

Given they were carrying it, the EA probably couldn't see the harm in allowing it.

maybe the Agent didn't see it not being carried?

you'd look a bit daft demanding a deep clean simply because a handbag dog walking a few steps on your carpet.

Which isn't really the point, but to be honest I'd take the Newfie any day; handbag dogs are notorious for toileting indoors...🙄

OneRarelySeesABrazierTheseDays · 02/10/2024 07:32

Did the dog like your house?
Has it made an offer?

HomeTheatreSystem · 02/10/2024 07:40

Definitely complain! How are you to trust them when you've caught them out lying? What else will they lie about if you keep these guys on as your agents? Tell them they need to pay to have the carpets cleaned. If you apply basic commonsense and consideration for other people, you'll have known it was not ok to take the dog to the viewing without at the very least checking first. I say that as a dog lover.

Absolutely this. No one should have to stipulate upfront anything that any sane normal non absolutely entitled as fuck would dream of thinking was unacceptable anyway.

When I was selling my house a couple arrived eating chips out of a box and threw a fit because I refused to let them in until they’d finished eating them. They keeping wailing ‘but we’re hungry’ - maybe I should have stipulated ‘no hot food while you view’ according to some on here!

greengreyblue · 02/10/2024 07:46

I am a dog owner and I find it unacceptable. Didn’t have dogs when I had young chn and that would’ve really bothered me. My dog would automatically wee or spray in your garden if it went out, it’s instinct.

Screamingabdabz · 02/10/2024 07:46

Fanlover1122 · 01/10/2024 21:29

I bring my dog to house viewings….7 figure properties…..

I do check with the agent though - whether or not it’s ok, it may be entitled of me, but at the price point I am looking at I don’t expect to hear a no 🤭

Edited

Ugh. You don’t think social etiquette applies to you because you have money? And you don’t expect ‘to hear a no’? Vile classless behaviour.

greengreyblue · 02/10/2024 07:49

@Fanlover1122 the value of the property has no bearing on viewing etiquette. You sound delightful by the way. 🙄

That's insane as well!

This thread has been quite an education.
If we sell up the viewings list for the agents will be no dogs, no food, no alcohol, no strong perfume(!), shoes off... I'll be a nightmare vendor 😆

Kids under 1 with pets have a much healthier gut biome than kids without. They probably did your kids gut biome a favour.
