Dog came to our house viewing

Memberberry · 01/10/2024 20:21

Our estate agent brought a potential buyer round to view our house today who turned up with their dog. I saw them on the front door ring camera carry it in to our house but when I checked the back garden camera I could see it walking on our carpet!

We have a 5 year old and a 5 month old and it walked all over where the boys play (luckily most of their things were put away for the visit) and the estate agent knows this.

The dog also was carried into their bedroom and held above our baby’s cot.

if this hadn’t annoyed me enough when asked about it the estate agent lied and said the dog was carried the whole time. When I told her we can see it on the ring she said she’d make a note that no pets would be allowed on future viewings and that’s it ok as the dog didn’t go to the toilet in our garden.

I don’t think I’m being unreasonable but just wanted to gauge opinions before I speak to the agent properly tomorrow and whether that’s normal behaviour or is as bizarre as I think it is.

I'm a great dog lover and my current dog is small enough to be carried but I wouldn't dream of doing that!! If the dog had just had an operation or something and couldn't be left, one of us would have waited in the car with her. And clearly that wasn't the.case here. Totally unacceptable of the EA to allow such complete disrespect. What if one of you were severely allergic? Not that it's OK even if you're not. I'd be changing agent and telling them why!

@AutumnTimeForCosy24 if a Newfoundland turned up at my home with prospective buyers, I'd probably reduce my asking price 🤣.

I haven't had the opportunity to be around many, but the few interactions I have had, I just feel so content.

@ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver

me too!!

My cousin had one, she was absolutely gorgeous! She lived to sit on your knee & cuddle!! Great in the winter, not so much in the summer!

HeadsAlwaysSpinnig · 01/10/2024 23:14

What if the bloody thing has fleas!

When I'm selling my 7 figure property I shall absolutely tell you to leave your dog behind. My dogs don't need your mutt in their home.

Each to their own right? Your prerogative to say no! Hopefully you are not as rude in real life! It is rather acceptable in the small corner of London where I live to take dogs to most places, it just is what it is. I wouldn’t like to live there if I was afraid of/ didn’t like dogs. Equally one of the reasons I love living there is because it’s dog friendly! I wouldn’t live in an area that wasn’t dog friendly - I where I couldn’t take a dog into shops etc, for example I wouldn’t expect to take a dog into shops in the Southall/ Hounslow area of London.

As a fellow Londoner I was so happy to see my local cafe putting up a sign to say that they have changed to a dog free cafe.

From speaking with the owners turns out they had got a lot of feedback about people not enjoying eating in a place where dogs were allowed so saw a gap in the market, because it had went so far in the other direction over the last couple of years

They have been full every time I have passed so it’s not causing them any issue

letthemalldoone · 01/10/2024 23:27

Well clearly it wasn't great on the part of the estate agent, but I do think you are slightly overreacting. I doubt the dog did any actual harm by walking through your house, though I agree it shouldn't have been there.

We learned the hard way about pets and viewings... two of our prospective buyers screamed and fled when they saw our two large cats basking on the sofa! After that, we put them in the cat carrier in the car during viewings!

sheldonRockz · 01/10/2024 23:29

You are not being unreasonable OP, it’s mental they’ve been allowed to bring the dog on the viewing.

your agent sounds rubbish what with lying to you and then book g viewings with people who are not even on the market yet. If it was me, i’d be looking at a different agent as I’d have no trust in them.

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 01/10/2024 23:29

You need a new estate agent. First they didn't communicate to ask you about allowing the dog in. Then they lied. The first could be carelessness or low standards. The second is dangerous in someone you're trusting with the keys to your home.

AutumnTimeForCosy24 · 01/10/2024 23:11

@Beesandhoney123

you cannot speak for 'everyone'

I wouldn't mind people bringing their dog

I wouldn't be secretly despising them

I find it odd to do so without asking first, I'd never have thought to stipulate that when discussing things with the EA.

In my opinion should be included in my original post. Or maybe ' very few people'

Def not implying 'everyone'

FerienInLipizza · 01/10/2024 23:34

So despite you saying only proceedable buyers, they are showing people around that have not even marketed their houses AND they are allowing dogs into your home? They need shaming on social media FFS. They're lemons.

TwistedWonder · 01/10/2024 23:36

How have we got to such a ridiculous point in society where someone needs to specify in advance that anyone viewing their home shouldn’t arrive with animals in tow? How can anyone seriously expect to bowl up at someone they’ve never mets home with an animal and think that’s normal behaviour?

Whatever next? Maybe turn up with a llama or a camel or a penguin or maybe an aardvark why not eh?

AlmondsAreGreat · 01/10/2024 23:39

I wouldn’t even turn up with my kid, never mind a dog. The sense of entitlement is unreal.

That is great for them! Catching that gap in the market.

Choice is a great thing, hence I live where dogs are allowed pretty much everywhere!

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 01/10/2024 23:47

Whether I want to encounter animals in cafés has nothing to do with whether I want random life forms brought into my home in my absence!

OuiLaLa · 02/10/2024 00:04

Blimey, I wasn’t even allowed to take my 4 year old child into a viewing even if carried!

2921j2 · 02/10/2024 00:10

I love dogs and I have one. But bringing a dog to a viewing in someone’s home is absolutely terrible behaviour. I think it’s possibly even worse that your estate agent a) didn’t put a stop to it and b) is a straight up liar.

Holidaysrule · 02/10/2024 00:19

I have dogs and there is no way I would ever take them to view a house. In fact, I did today, and I left the dogs firmly at home,
That said, the fact that a dog “walked on your carpet” or was “held over your babies cot” is no reason to have a massive melt down. It’s a dog, not a plague ridden dead body! Tell your estate agent no dogs allowed and move on.

Josette77 · 02/10/2024 00:20

Super shitty.

I have a dog and cats. What if you had cats and the dog attacked them?

Normallynumb · 02/10/2024 00:21

Completely unacceptable and unnecessary.
I wouldn't be impressed by the estate agent lying..
You or DC could have a dog allergy

JustBec · 02/10/2024 00:25

I’m a huge dog lover - you couldn’t bring enough dogs to my house, generally, but this is a huge no-no! I can’t quite comprehend how anyone (agent or viewer) thought this was reasonable or normal!

Bizarre to bring a dog, out of order for the EA to lie but you do sound a little bit unhinged about it all.

Curious if potential buyers know you're going to be watching them on your cameras? I think I'd find that weirder 🤷🏼‍♀️

Fraaahnces · 02/10/2024 00:34

I’d get a new agent. This one’s quite liberal with the truth.
