To suspect vegetables are crucifying me?

From a family of IBS sufferers, mine has worsened in the past few years.
Always loved veg, eat it every day, and have generally aimed to consume the low fodmap variety to be on the safe side.
Had tests, no allergies, other issues, etc.
I did the FODMAP exclusion last year and had mixed results, although followed it to a tee.

Recently had another bad bout, lasting a few months so kept a food diary.
I observed the following within a day or 6 hours of eating
:
Potato, carrot, green beans with chicken breast - lots of uncomfortable gas.
Mixed low fodmap salad with tuna - less painful but still bloated later.
Cheese on toast - no symptoms.
50g of penne pasta with peppers and tomato - no symptoms.
Roast with root veg and stuffing - raging hell.
Homemade coleslaw with cabbage, carrot, radish and cress - fartsville.
Small Co-Op margherita pizza with olives, spinach and chilli peppers - no symptoms.

Cutting a long story short, I can conclude that I am safe with tomato, spinach and various peppers. I am safe with some wheat and lactose.
I simply can't eat other low fodmap veg without issue.
Most people I read about say gluten, dairy or high fodmap veg caused their issues but I seem to be an outlier. There is so little veg left that I can comfortable eat that I am a bit fed up. Is this even enough to get by on?

So much messaging about how veg can be consumed in great quantities but not for me. I feel a bit shortchanged.

Could it be chicken? I had terrible IBS pains until I stopped eating chicken.

mrwalkensir · 29/09/2024 00:20

I've always been fine with veg apart from peppers. Fruit an absolute no go, Find the whole smoothie fetish thing weird. It was always a running joke in the past about scrumping leading to gut trouble!

LittlePotOfCress · 29/09/2024 00:28

Thing is, people suggest so many things from cheese to mayo to ryvita. I know they're trying to help though.
The ones I have listed are the most repetitive triggers, as far as I know. It is easy to become muddled since no two IBS sufferers have the same triggers.

I'm so fed up this weekend that I'm sick and tired of food full stop.
DH said ' why not try soup for a while?'. Aaagh! It's not my favourite and always blows me up. I can possibly manage a creamy tomato and that's it.

If I could live on cheese toasties and tuna tortilla's with cucumber I'd be happy!

FODMAP took out a lot of veg for me. I’ve an IBD rather than IBS.
Peppers are very much dead to me.

MissEsmeWatson · 29/09/2024 00:33

I've been told that organic veg is much better for IBS sufferers, but it's very expensive of course.

I'm sorry to hear that, It's exasperating isn't it?
The hardest thing is getting your head around it as veggies are so touted as the cure all for life's ailments. We are told to eat them unlimited, to pile 'em up!

Ah well since there's so few I can eat I can probably afford it Grin

One of my DDs gets really done by oil, especially olive oil. Took her ages to twig to it. She only clicked when she added a very very small amount of mayo to a previously safe meal knowing she was fine with eggs and it gave her hell.

It didn't make all the veggies ok, but there are some now that she can steam and be fine that roasting just wasn't

Birdscratch · 29/09/2024 00:38

I have IBS. I know my food triggers but the main one for me is stress. Stress always kicks it off. Once it’s really bad all I can eat is potato in all its forms and tuna. It gets so depressing.

DevilledEggsies · 29/09/2024 00:39

You should try carnivore.
In your shoes I’d eat nothing but chicken for a week (unless I had a bad symptom day) to see how I got on.

LittlePotOfCress · 29/09/2024 00:45

I feel like I've tried so many combinations, but recently I haven't excluded veg altogether. Might be worth a shot for a week or so.
If I exclude any more I would be worried about not getting enough nutrients and fibre (and I know it's the sugars and fibre that aggravate IBS). Sadly I don't think I could stand carnivore on it's own.

Stress was my initial presumption over the years, but recently there is a direct and obvious link to what I eat. I have wondered if stress is causing oversensitivity, so that whatever I eat is going to hurt, but.....just bloody confusing!

I have recently cut out:
Mayo, cauliflower, crackers, chocolate, leafy stuff and white carbs. No joy whatsoever.

This is me currently too. I am just so fed up of food completely. I am sick of the whole ordeal. I wish there was a pill i could just take instead of eating, it would make my life easier.

PrincessofWells · 29/09/2024 00:51

My worst triggers are alcohol and chocolate, followed by beans but not green beans.

LittlePotOfCress · 29/09/2024 01:03

yeh, alcohol has turned on me since i got older, too.
Thankfully chocolate like me!

Just musing about 'Do you eat your 10 a day'.... OMG I would love to, but yikes!

Is it things that grow in the ground? All the root vegetables plus potatoes - thats what jumped out at me from your list.

Birdscratch · 29/09/2024 01:05

It’s different for everyone. I figured out my triggers after about 15 years of it. I can eat a meal with bread in it once or twice a week. If I eat it more frequently, my IBS kicks off. That one was hard to pin down because it seems to be a cumulative effect and isn’t easy to link to a specific meal. I can’t tolerate milk well. If I drank a glass of milk I’d be ill within a few hours. I can get away with milk in a sauce or custard maybe once a week. If I stick to that and avoid quorn, blueberries and onions in large quantities I can eat what I want most of the time including veg.

Birdscratch · 29/09/2024 01:09

If I watch England play football in a knockout tournament I’ll be in pain by the end of the game. Stupid stress.

Nastyaa · 29/09/2024 01:12

I ate one single apple at work & I was in excruciating pain. Shooting pains down my leg, I could barely drive home as it hurt to move my thighs.

Not sure really.

I can safely eat:
Cress
Tomato
Spinach
peppers (all of them)
avocado
olives
nuts
herbs
cucumber
blueberry and strawberry
bread, pasta, rice
hard cheese and lactose free milk
basic pizza
pesto without garlic

Have issues with:
potato
cauliflower
onion
garlic
parsnip
sprouts
cabbage
kale
raspberries
leeks (the worst thing ever!)
most fruit
yoghurt
all beans, lentils, chickpeas, sweetcorn
asparagus
mushrooms
broccoli
chippy or fast food or flavoured noodles
stuffing

Xmas is haaard!
I am currently undecided about peas and carrots.

If I can get enough micronutrients from the safe list, I would rest easier.

you should get tested for sibo (small bowel overgrowth)
also I had this and did a colon irrigation once a month for a year - cleared out my old stuff and never had a prob eating fruit and vegg again no more ibs

LittlePotOfCress · 29/09/2024 01:50

ok the sibo stuff has freaked me out Shock

You can’t sort this out alone and nor can you take too much advice from a bunch of Mumsnet randoms. You need proper support from a dietitian, not least because you need to ensure proper nutrition. In Australia, you can just make an appointment, no need for a GP’s referral.

This is a list of dietitians around the world who are experienced in food intolerances and elimination diets https://www.fedup.com.au/support/failsafe-dietitians.

garlictwist · 29/09/2024 05:20

I don't eat veg at all because it makes me shit. If I eat veg I'm up at 4am desperately needing to go and on the toilet for a couple of hours. I now eat one banana a day as my "one a day" as that's all my bowel can tolerate and take a multivitamin. Yes, it's not great health wise but I feel so much better for it.

Bgfe · 29/09/2024 05:31

I know someone who’s on a mission to live a very long and healthy life. He is a highly intelligent man now in his 80s and now eats nothing but animal products. No fruit and veg. It is a thing. He is incredibly fit.
He was discussing a book called something like ‘plants are trying to kill you’ and extolling the virtues of a carnivorous diet. Jordan Peterson does the same.
It’s very much against the received wisdom so will get shouted down on here but you may want to explore further.

stayathomer · 29/09/2024 05:41

Mum has coilitis and diverticulitis which alternate/ when she has a colitis flare up she has to stay away from a list of veg and go onto eg white bread. Just letting you know in case it’s related, not sure if it’s possible to have ibs and colitis but just in case!
