I know I am being unreasonable to ask is here really. But hey ho. Lots of good ideas abound. I want to buy a largish pencil case or make up bag for my 2 DDs and fill it with essential items. A bag that is small enough for them to keep in their back packs. They are aged 23 and 20 and are lovely young women but are always running out of basic things. One is on the PGCE. One is a university.

This is meant to be a fun but useful extra Christmas present that will save them time and money and be appealing. I have in mind already: small pack of paracetamol, tissues, wet wipes, tampons, pen, safety pins, mini deodorant, mini toothpaste and travel toothbrush, chewing gum, £10, couple of £1 coins, portable charger, plasters. Any better./different ideas?

Just to reiterate.. this is not a major present. Just a fun thing for them to open that will be useful rather than tat.

Thanks all.

Add a she wee to the list.

Casper73 · 01/10/2024 12:06

A couple of safety pins

@sashh Yes - ime 6th formers love silly stickers, especially if they can stick them on their heads, hands or jackets instead of in their books. It's all done in a very silly, fake cutesy way that is quite nice imo.

Awww this is just such a lovely idea! What a thoughtful mum you are.
What about one of these flatlay pouches to put it all in? They’re a bit spendy but quite glam, and would lovely as a make up bag or being pulled out to hunt for the essentials! They come in all sorts of patterns- I got one for myself recently for holiday and it has oranges on it haha!

i have a flatlay make up bag, they are marvellous.

Just another thought, you can get tine first aid kits, might be useful.

Nail file
Nail Glue
Hand sanitizer
Mints
Folding toothbrush Mini Toothpaste
Dental floss
Folding brush
Compact mirror
Bottle opener
Personal alarm

Isthiscorrect · 02/10/2024 15:27

A fold up shopping bag.
All of the above.
Why not get all the bits and pieces then you can visually see the size of the bag?

I had a bag made for my friends 40.th. It was just the size for her cigarettes 🙄 but it was sequins and it had her name on it and if you flipped the sequins the other way it had her age 😂😂
Something like that maybe?

Lovely idea if they were in their mid teens but they’re grown women who should be organised enough not to keep running out of basic things.

Well you’re a bundle of joy aren’t you! Of course they are old enough to manage, but OP is being a lovely mum and planning a useful present for her DDs of little things in a pouch that can be transferred between bags. Useful at any age, in fact a present I’d really appreciate and I’m in my 50s!!

AvoidingStalkers · 05/10/2024 08:22

I think this is a lovely Idea.....I am definitely stealing it and doing something similar for my 14 year old daughter at Christmas!

yikesanotherbooboo · 05/10/2024 08:49

I have a bag like that ( was a free bag from Clinique ) in my handbag. I am much older than your DDs but it has:
Notebook
Pen( s)
Headphones
Lip balm
Lipstick
Tissues
Paracetamol
Little sunscreen
Phone charger lead
It used to have hand sanitiser but I no longer feel the need.

BoysBagsShoes · 05/10/2024 09:36

What a brilliant thread! I’ll definitely be doing this for my DSD when she goes to uni next year. Obviously depends on what your daughters usually use, not sure if people have mentioned these yet:

  • aloe Vaseline - good for lips, but also burns, nails, dry skin, flyaway hair
  • any OTC meds DDs use regularly. Anti-histamine will be in DSD (indigestion meds in mine!)
  • Small pocket tissues
  • perfume samples
  • cheap multi makeup kit (neutral lipstick for lips/cheeks, concealer, eye pencil, small mascara)
  • post office pre-loaded debit card
  • credit card size multi tool. Has a ruler, screwdriver etc.

I will say that this was my initial reaction ie what’s wrong with them, why is this a thing. I then reflected on my reaction and realised I was jealous as I’d never have been given a thoughtful present like that or been allowed to be a bit disorganised etc as that would have been punished. So perhaps that poster may want to think where her comments are really coming from. Just a thought.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 06/10/2024 12:35

Thanks all. So many great suggestions since I last checked in. I’ve got a good list now. Want to keep the bag small and light enough to get carted about with them. And the bonus is I am going to do myself one too!

I would also add written on a piece of paper main telephone numbers/emergency contacts, just in case lose phone/or it loses charge.
