AIBU to ask what you would put in a small bag for 2 early 20s DDs.

I know I am being unreasonable to ask is here really. But hey ho. Lots of good ideas abound. I want to buy a largish pencil case or make up bag for my 2 DDs and fill it with essential items. A bag that is small enough for them to keep in their back packs. They are aged 23 and 20 and are lovely young women but are always running out of basic things. One is on the PGCE. One is a university.

This is meant to be a fun but useful extra Christmas present that will save them time and money and be appealing. I have in mind already: small pack of paracetamol, tissues, wet wipes, tampons, pen, safety pins, mini deodorant, mini toothpaste and travel toothbrush, chewing gum, £10, couple of £1 coins, portable charger, plasters. Any better./different ideas?

Just to reiterate.. this is not a major present. Just a fun thing for them to open that will be useful rather than tat.

Thanks all.

Oh my. It's threads like these that make me think like I live in another universe

Why?

Slidesclipsandbobbins · 29/09/2024 15:08

Yes, I'm wondering why too @lateatwork?
What's wrong with the thread?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 29/09/2024 15:17

A couple of hair slides

Ophy83 · 29/09/2024 16:22

I'd avoid sharp metal items that may not be allowed everywhere e.g. planes. Definitely second including lip balm, knickers and maybe a mini pot of sudocrem.

Everything you’ve listed is spot on. Just maybe add some hair bands and clips and a tiny travel pack of make up wipes. Mini mascara and tiny perfume sample bottle too.

Oh I love this!! I had to work all this out for myself unfortunately haha, but I would have loved the thoughtfulness as a gift from my mum.

I personally would add: mini dry shampoo (for those bad hair days) and perhaps Rennies/travel sickness tablets if your DD suffers from motion sickness at all. But maybe that's just a me thing... (life saver when you do need them though!)

It will be a very personal little bag, but just so lovely and thoughtful :)

Moll2020 · 29/09/2024 19:10

What a brilliant idea, do you mind if I copy?

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 29/09/2024 19:20

I haven’t read the full thread so don’t know if these have been suggested but I have lots of the Elizabeth Scarlett pouches - they are so brilliant, well made and can take a surprising amount of stuff and have some really beautiful designs:

Mia Tui do some lovely bags with lots of compartments and they all come with little extras like make up bag / coin purse space for water bottle

I love this idea, and think I may have to steal it for my 17 year old daughter. I would love someone to do it for me. ☺️

Oh my. It's threads like these that make me think like I live in another universe

This reaction has amused me disproportionately. I would love to know what can possibly be considered offensive to anyone about this thread. It's such a modest and yet kind, practical gift that almost anyone would appreciate from a relative.

What universe do you live in? One in which young women do not sometimes need deodorant, plasters, pounds and pens?

I cannot believe this is actually a thing

What does this mean? I genuinely don't understand what people mean when they ask "if something is a thing".

Especially in this case. It's one woman doing something and a few other women saying it's a nice idea. Does that constitute "a thing"? It's a collection of several small things to be specific ....

And it's hardly some radical idea that you can't possibly have imagined ever happening. "Mom buys daughter small bags full of essentials - stop the press!"

It's just a thoughtful idea for a gift because her daughters are a bit scatty. They can leave the bags at home if they don't like them....

I'm loving this idea. I'm a Christian so would probably also write a little piece of scripture like a psalm for my kids to read if they felt stressed or anxious. You could always write a really heartfelt message and put it in a tiny envelope for them to read when they felt wobbly, that they could hold dear to their hearts in times of uncertainty. Something to remind them how much you love them and why they are wonderful!

Love this

changeme4this · 29/09/2024 21:29

Is there a monthly beauty/health pack type subscription you could buy? We did this for DD (New Zealand) and she was able to try all sorts of products we wouldn’t normally buy.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 28/09/2024 19:48

Oh you are all so brilliant. Fantastic ideas. I’m also glad that it got a positive reception and people don’t think it’s a stupid idea. Feel free to keep ideas coming. Now to find the bag. Ang ideas? Thanks so much.

A pair or two of black opaque tights x

Avoidingsleep · 29/09/2024 22:25

Mini perfume and party feet gel pads too.

scrivette · 29/09/2024 22:25

I am unorganised and have about three of these I keep in the locker near my front door that I can grab on my way out.

Each one has;
Packet of tissues
Vaseline tub
Pen/mini notebook
Lip gloss
Fidget toy (for DC)
£1 coin/trolly thing

You can get a small tin of cream/balm from Body Shop or L'Occetain that can be used for lots of different things if you wanted something different from the Vaseline.

I have them in a small pencil case or pouch. You can get personalised pouches made too.
