Those protestors actually make me feel even less bothered by climate change. I genuinely don't give a shit anymore.

Have they managed to convince anyone?

So do we keep our fingers crossed, or do we take the actions we know could lessen the worst of it?

I don't believe anything I do will do anything to lessen the worst of it.

Imagine your roof was leaking and about to cave in and all but one of the builders in town have said it will collapse in the next year etc

A planet is much more complicated than simple remedial action on a small building.

but people seem to forget that also by the time we get to this future, science could of already solved the climate crisis etc

Also, this isn’t some far off future problem. It’s happening now. In the U.K. there is increased mortality and morbidity due to climate change. There are more floods and fires. In Europe just this last month there have been major floods. All over the world people are already dying and suffering.

The fact that we are discussing the issue here makes me think they're doing something right. It doesn't really matter whether you like them, support them, believe them or are worried about climate change and the future. It's pushing the issue up the agenda and that's the point isn't it?

AmICrazyToEvenBother · 29/09/2024 09:11

They just make me angry. What the fuck does destroying art have to do with oil? Whilst capturing it all on their phones. No doubt.

Yamantau · 28/09/2024 23:44

when there is whole galaxies of planets, why should humans just stay on earth, ? where is the point of it or logic especially if we develop the tech to fly airplanes then why not develop space craft etc ?

😂😂 Good one. I’m being reminded of Homer Simpson’s plan to live under the sea. 😂😂😂

wickerlady · 29/09/2024 09:13

They make me care even less each time I see them throwing their toys out of the pram in some new, bizarre way.

We are a country whose economy is predominately service-industry based. We hardly produce a thing. Having Gill and Ken car share to their office is a drop in the ocean. Focus on China and Indias mass production for the west. If we are indeed able to influence climate change, we perhaps need to focus our attentions here.

The 'protesters' are ridiculous, glad that they are being charged. Throwing soup at a painting or Harrods isn't helping at all.
Inconvenience the billionaires who can make a difference.
Not someone average trying to drive to work.

It's always always always someone else's problem though isn't it? Richer people, governments for not having a plan, other countries.

Of course there are things you can do!

Of course a planet is more complex than a house. It’s an analogy not a direct comparison.

yes because earth is so yesterday, the future of humanity is in the stars the sooner humanity can expand to the stars then we can leave earth prime behind and build an empire for humanity in space

OMG you've solved the climate crisis! How long is going to take to build an empire for humanity in space? Can I stop re-cycling yet??

It's ironic that you feel a painting is more valuable than the planet we live on. If the planet cannot survive then there will be no point in having possessions.

The fact oil is responsible killing 40000 people in the uk prematurely every year and damaging their quality of life is of human value but a painting is far more important to others

I don’t think they are getting their key message across though. I bet if you ask most people they think all they want is people to give up their cars and flying. It’s much bigger than that, it’s also about consuming. They want governments to take notice, and I don’t think they are and they won’t unless the public are behind them. Stunts like the ambulance and train just put people off. They need the public on their side and honestly being an organisation of posh kids isn’t going to do that.

Although I know people who have stopped flying, most people can’t give up driving because there is no alternatives. Lots of people near me just take taxis as the buses are so unreliable/expensive. Outside of cities it’s very hard to live in a lot of places without access to a car.

KeepYaHeadUp · 29/09/2024 09:18

•Have you seen how big the planet is - and how insignificant the UK is?•

It's not about the land mass though. It's about consumption and emissions and our direct + indirect emissions are totally out of proportion to our land mass. We outsource production to other countries then say "their emissions are loads worse than ours" and then go about our day.

PuppiesLove · 29/09/2024 09:18

Of course a planet is more complex than a house. It’s an analogy not a direct comparison.

I don't think there is anything meaningful I can do.

I hope you don't own a car, don't go to concerts or shows that involve people flying in using private planes, don't holiday anywhere but near home, don't produce any landfill (there are people actually doing that).

If it made a difference, I suspect I'm actually willing to give up more comforts than most so called greenies. I support a radical revamp of the earth and how we live, but the world's not going to follow that, so I just get on with the world as it is.

yes, that is the entire point - it keeps it relevant news and in the public eye

I’ll admit I don’t really understand those who are so opposed to their methods. Protests aren’t meant to be neat or convenient. Surely their long-term goals are more important than the material things they ruin on the way?

I think that's the point OP is trying to make - their methods do not achieve their long term goals.

I care a great deal about the environment and the future of our planet but even I switch over/change the page/tune out whenever they are mentioned. There comes a point when they are disliked so much they no longer are effective and I suspect they're well past it. What good are their protests doing then? If everyone just keeps rolling their eyes at them and ignoring them?

I don't know what the alternative is, but I don't think throwing soup over art is a good tactic.

Yes, we should stop buying unnecessary shit.

So much so. I am rewilding and planting a wildlife friendly garden. My neighbours have plastic fairy solar lights in a tree that will probably break down in five minutes (and that disrupt wildlife). Those sorts of unnecessary and stupid plastic products should be banned to start with.

FixTheBone · 29/09/2024 09:19

savannahowl · 28/09/2024 16:27

I have 'reproduced' 😂
And no, still don't care.

Generations down the line will either figure it out, or not.

We've already figured it out, decades ago.

Point is, nobody did or is doing anything about it.

I'm not a hypocrite. I don't participate in those things while complaining about having to change the planet.

KeepYaHeadUp · 29/09/2024 09:29

@PuppiesLove - well, no, you do participate in the things, you just don't care about the issue of climate change

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 29/09/2024 09:30

@ColdinSeptember it isn’t just that the public transport is rubbish outside of cities, many rely on cars to do their jobs, I live rurally and work in community nursing alongside many home carers, we will always need cars to care for the ever growing elderly population in those rural areas with more and more hospital at home being called for. There is no alternative transport for that therefore I will always need my car, electric is not a viable solution for me currently due to costs and no option of charging at home

I'm not sure that some soup on a van Gough disrupted any ambulances?

Well, just in case you were unaware, a van "Gough" painting isn't the one and only thing that JSO have ever targeted.

KeepYaHeadUp · 29/09/2024 09:29

@PuppiesLove - well, no, you do participate in the things, you just don't care about the issue of climate change

I don't care about the issue of climate change and I actually don't participate in those things (other than producing landfill) because I have a wider care for the environment. As I said above, I am rewilding and planting a wildlife friendly garden. I do care for the wildlife. I would give up more comforts for the planet than most greenies probably would. Not because I care about climate change but because I care about the plants and wildlife. I live a pretty conscious life, but don't care about climate change directly.

My biggest vice would be driving long distances regularly to spend time in the wild. I own that and plan to keep it up.
