To say the Ferrero palm oil promo is hypocritical

There is a sponsored thread appearing in my MN feed about sustainable palm oil. Some kind of collab between Ferrero and Chester Zoo.
From what I recall, Ferrero has a pretty bad track record of child labour in both hazelnuts (Turkey) and cocoa (West Africa). I don’t take very kindly to them preaching on a parenting forum about sustainable palm oil 🤨

Yes! And why do we need any kind of palm oil anyway? Total greenwashing

Imgoingtoaskthequestion · 27/09/2024 20:17

Thanks, I’ve been thinking the same. I check labels for palm oil before buying food because it seems to be in so much food now. I won’t buy it and I don’t eat it. I don’t think sustainable palm oil exists.

Palm oil production destroys the habitat of orangutans.

Palm oil has been found in studies to be carcinogenic: breast cancer (in mice)

I read something about it being a bad fat, like trans fats, bad for your heart and arteries, and it’s only a matter of time until it is regulated away from processed foods like trans fats were.

Hey. Yeah to be honest I read something online a while ago about this and it shocked me. Chester Zoo and Ferrero are in kahoots with each other and this is good to know. It's a massive greenwashing lie about "sustainable" palm oil. And there's a lot of companies and Zoos benefit financially out of this greenwashing. If you haven't already check out this website Palm Oil Detectives which goes deep into the relationships. Short version - RSPO palm oil is complete BS. Here's the link https://palmoildetectives.com/2021/10/22/greenwashing/

Best to just boycott palm oil wherever you see it! Good luck.

Sustainable or not is missing the point.
I'm not a fussy eater but palm oil is rank.
I don't buy stuff (especially chocolate) that contains it.

Yeah fully agree! The taste is rank.

There's a lot more to it than that though.

It's destroying rainforests all over the world, sending many animals extinct not just orangutans but many others. As an animal lover this really upsets me and made me actively looking for it and stopping buying it. I found a way to do that online through a website I found. See link above.

In recent years it's come to light it's not just animals being impacted by palm oil, little children and women are forced to work for large palm oil corporations in SE Asia and in South America to pick the palm oil. They are paid a tiny amount and do backbreaking work and often die while working - women and children!

Learning all this made my blood boil, as a mother this really really p**d me off to the next level! So yeah - it goes beyond the taste of it. It's the taste of child abuse and child slavery and animal extinction that you are tasting, no joke!!

Basically Ferrero is a buyer of this palm oil linked to child slavery. So their claims of being "sustainable" are a total greenwashing lie.

I only discovered recently, how bad palm oil is for health. As I have been discovered to have high cholesterol, it's one of the main things I've had to cut from my diet.
Compared to most other oils, it's shockingly damaging and a risk for heart attacks and strokes. So just another reason to avoid it.

mumoffourau · 31/07/2025 12:12

Why on earth this s is allowed in our food I will never know. Sorry I get very emotional about this!

I try my hardest to stop my kids from eating it. I can't stop when they see their friends tho and other parents let them eat it.

You speak the truth about how it's causing heart disease, heart attacks, diabetes, also other things like dementia as well, absolutely shocking it is. This is a good resource on all things palm oil and how its totally bad for you and it's linked to diseases. I will tell whoever listens to me so stop eating it. Nasty s**t for sure. Not to get off the topic but that's just the tip of the iceberg really, so many other additives are linked to these diseases.

I started growing my own food but tbh I have no idea what I'm doing really LOL
