I work in a nursery. A child’s behaviour wasn’t very good today. He was hitting others, throwing things and being quite aggressive towards the others. One of the members of staff mouthed to another ‘he’s such a little shit’ and the other agreed and nodded. Aibu to think this isn’t on?

Nursery staff have feelings too. As long as they didn’t say it to him or in front of other children it’s fine.

It was in front of him and the other children but just sort of mouthed/a whisper

Not on, not appropriate, and not professional. I'd report it. What if it's a red flag to worse treatment of children and you didn't say anything?

Northerngirl89 · 27/09/2024 17:32

So no, you're not being unreasonable. And the fact that you posted it means you know it isn't right. Go with your gut and tell your superior/manager.

Edited as missed your first line,

If makes you uncomfortable then have a chat with your line manager.

Not acceptable. Not professional. Any thoughts like that should stay in the thinkers' heads.

Skilled childcare workers actually see the behaviour and try to uncover what's underlying it (without being psychologists, obvs but they see the child, and see a child who needs help)

Behaviour is communication in young children.

Not professional but if it's a one off, I would let it slide- if not I would talk to the staff member before doing anything else.

It's not great. But I've worked in a nursery. 10 hour shifts of shite pay, no job progression, constantly asking the children questions and "being at their level", never allowing them to just play by themselves, not even being allowed to chat to another staff member for two minutes, never being allowed to tell them off, doing the same activities day in day out because of lack of resources or money, I can totally see why someone would crack a little bit.

I mean..sounds like he was being a little shit.

I dunno, staff need to blow off steam too. So long as they didn't say it in a way that any children could hear and don't treat the child any differently, I would say it's probably ok.
