This man was the HEAD of the Police Federation but felt it was "funny" to say he'd "enjoy comforting her in her hotel room" about Lissie Harper, Andrew Harper's widow. How can a man who says something like that be trusted to make any judgement on any aspect of any woman's life.

He also groped a woman, made a gross sexualised remark to a pregnant woman and this behaviour was 'so common' from him that the Head of Comms said he'd 'got used to it'.

AIBU to say that the Police force has a HUGE epidemic problem with misogyny?

PC Andrew Harper's grieving widow slams lewd comments

A misconduct panel was today told that retired PC John Apter allegedly made sexualised comments about Lissie Harper in the wake of her hero husband's death.

I read about this this morning. It's just...grim. On so many levels. But the worst thing is, it's not surprising in a horrible sort of way, for middle aged men of a certain type, but also for people employed as Policemen.
As for all men caught in this
Kind of behaviour-my first thought is 'you're vile' and my second is ' but you also must be either completely thick or incredibly arrogant to believe you can do and say this sort of stuff and get away with it anymore'.

I hope they throw the book at him.

He sat drinking from a hip flask for during the Police Bravery Awards and was so drunk he was not allowed to speak. What an excellent role model to younger Police.

He's a disgrace. Although having spent time at Police Federation HQ I am not surprised.
Male, pale and stale is all I'm saying.

From the Guardian. Apter in the wake of Sarah Everard's murder-

'In 2021, he wrote in the Sunday Times: “We need to consign to the history books some of our canteen culture where sexist nicknames and derogatory remarks are made. When banter crosses the line to become sexist, derogatory or homophobic, that’s when it ceases to be banter.” '

All the time behaving like a parody of a 1970s office lech (although the comment about Lissie Harper might have been a bit much for some of those)

@Uricon2 exactly, the people being asked to resolve misogyny are misogynists. And so nothing ever changes.

Ugh. Why do men even think like this, and why have they not got a mechanism that stops the words dribbling out of their sorry little mouths. Washing out with soap would be a great start. Bit of restorative justice, eh?

Also, (side point, I know) but literally no one would want to be 'consoled' by you anywhere John. Because you are not the smartest, kindest of men - and also take a look in the mirror. I mean it doesn't make a difference what a misogynist looks like, he's ugly on the inside but just the sheer irony of a bland middle aged man coming out with this nonsense, like he's the answer to every maiden's prayer. I mean, come on.

The photo of Lissie - so full of dignity and poise despite everything.

The police everywhere are corrupt, misogynist, incompetent and generally not fit for purpose. I can't see how anything will ever change as long as the people in charge are just more of the same.

Thevelvelletes · 25/09/2024 20:06

A fucking reprobate,it's a disgusting way to talk about women let alone a widow who lost her husband in the most tragic of circumstances.

user47 · 25/09/2024 20:37

@Thevelvelletes and surely the Head of the Police Federation should be upset enough by what happened to her husband to not be making crude jokes about his griveing widow. It really does beggar belief. 😡
