To expect a cash upgrade of flight at airport?

Does anyone have any experience of upgrading from Economy to Premium Economy or Business class at the airport?

I have a BA long haul flight booked in Economy using a companion voucher (so I got 50% off the number of avios required to book and then paid some cash on top). Because it's a reward flight, I can't do anything to upgrade before the airport but they've said I can ask at check in/bag drop and if there's seats available in a higher class I can pay to upgrade.

Has anyone done this before? How much did you have to pay if so?

If it helps, the full price Economy ticket would have been about £1400 return and there are a good number of seats left in PE and business on the flights, from what I can see online.

It's in a week so hopefully unlikely to fill up much more..

TIA.

It's a piece of string question. It depends on how full the flight is. And probably also how well you can haggle.

Just in case anyone comes across this, thought I'd update!

On the way out it was completely full - no seats to upgrade.

On the way back, I asked at the check in desk and it was the equivalent of £461 to upgrade to PE (nothing left in business) so I did it! I got the front row of PE - so extra legroom as it is the bulkhead where they have to have space for babies so they don't let you book this until 24 hours before. (Obv I checked no babies in the space!)

I think considering the deal I got for the flight overall it was worth it as the leg rest, inclined seat, front row etc was so good - very spacious and I'd say by far the best seat you could get on the plane without being in business class. 14/15 hours so not a short flight!

I will say that generally though, I was unimpressed with BA's offerings for food/drink etc on this leg - only 2 meals on a 14/15 hour flight in daytime! And then dimmed the lights for 90% of the time despite it not being nighttime where we took off from or when we were going to land! Oh well!
