Being named Christine

Do you think it is old fashioned? I don't know any others around my sort of age (other than Christine Lampard) and I (might be imagining it because I am sensitive) see people do a double take when I'm introduced. All the Christines I know in real life are minimum pension age at least.

I don't like Chris as it makes me feel like people think I'm a guy and I don't like Chrissy either as I feel silly.

I've rarely known women younger than me called Christine (I'm 62) - I blame it all on Christine Keeler
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/dec/05/christine-keeler-obituary

I am the youngest of the 4 Christines who sing in our community choir (mainly over 70s):

I have never been called Chris and gave very short shrift to the one person who decided to trying calling me "Chrissie".

I have nothing against the name, and wouldn't choose to change it : at school there were 6 Catherines in my year group .......

I love love love the name Chrissie!

mikado1 · 25/09/2024 13:17

I think Chrissie is dreadful and so is Tina. Christine or Christie/Chris much nicer.

I very much doubt people are raising eyebrows OP, so I think it's all about your perception of your name and hopefully the reassurance here has helped.

I only knew one growing up (Ireland) and she's one of 3 I know now that are all in the same community now as adults. All in early/mid 40s. I know one 12yo Christine, which I did think was an unusual pick at the time.

I definitely wouldn't see it as an equivalent of Maureen, I don't know any Maureen under 70. I think that would be much more unusual/ageing.

Singinghollybob · 25/09/2024 13:19

I know 2 Christine's- one 40 and the other 44 and I've never thought it was odd.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 25/09/2024 13:20

I am 38 and knew two Christines in my school year (and also several Christinas).

VisitationRights · 25/09/2024 13:23

All the Christine/Christina I know are about 45-55 years old so not that far off your age. Your name is of its time.

harrumphh · 25/09/2024 13:24

Find it bizarre anyone would do a double take over the name Christine.

Maybe if you're 20 or younger people find it weird your name isn't Ella or Evie.

goodluckbinbin · 25/09/2024 13:25

It’s just not trendy right now! It’ll come back… if you’d have told me I’d have young children in schools with classmates names Wilfie, Ivy, Violet, Stan, Frank , Agnes, etc I would have laughed! my friends 8 year old is in a footie team with 3 Wilfred’s!

Freshflower · 25/09/2024 13:25

I knew a few Christine's growing up , they will be about 40 now. Or older ladies were normally called Christine. What about Crystal , or Kirsten or kirstine sounds nice?

Choosenandenough · 25/09/2024 13:27

I love the name because it reminds me of the Stephen King novel/movie about the car! I loved that movie when I was young. Now I know that might not be an amazing or helpful answer but I genuinely just love the name! It also gives me California 70’s vibes which I also love! I guess it’s what you associate names with but it’s a thumbs up from me!

TENSsion · 25/09/2024 13:29

I went to school with a Christine (I’m 37) and she went by Christie

Ellerby83 · 25/09/2024 13:30

It's a nice sounding name but it is dated. I'm 51 and have never met one my age or younger.
I do like Christie as an alternative.

persisted · 25/09/2024 13:30

I knew one in my year at school, we are mid forties now. Also SIL who is in her early 30s. I would never think twice about it.

TerribleGardener · 25/09/2024 13:30

I'm 45, there were 2 Christines in my year at school (about 150 kids in my year altogether, so probably approx 75 of those were girls) so must have been fairly common for our generation.

TENSsion · 25/09/2024 13:31

cheeeesey · 25/09/2024 12:30

"I've never thought about it but Chrissie Hynde is very cool."

She's not Christine though and she's 73 🤣

Yes it's an older name, but it's nice. I have a friend in her 40s named Christine

She is a Christine.

Ellerby83 · 25/09/2024 13:31

I think pp is right that Christine Keeler killed it off as a popular name

JBJ · 25/09/2024 13:32

I know a Christine who's in her early 30's and a Christina who's 45, plus there were two in my year at school (I'm 46), so I've never associated it with an "older" name really.

IDontHateRainbows · 25/09/2024 13:32

It's in the same cohort as Barbara, Patricia, lesley etc

Ie boomer generation

But it's not too bad for a boomer name

Fedup369 · 25/09/2024 13:33

I wouldn't bat an eye at 42 year old called Christine, unless you look a lot younger. I'm 30 and went to school with a girl called Christina- she was always known as Chrissie though even to this day, suits her actually and I think most people that know her assume that's her actual name

Fonzies · 25/09/2024 13:35

This is the first Christine I thought of. Not old!

Being named Christine
Clearinguptheclutter · 25/09/2024 13:37

I’m 46 and think it’s nice. Most Christines I come across are probably a bit older than me but to me it doesn’t sound as dated as say Linda or Deborah (no offence if that’s your name

Fedup369 · 25/09/2024 13:37

I think it's pretty normal to not be fond of your own name, I hate mine.

mine often appears on 10 worst girls names lists 😂 it's Kelsey.

always hated it always will but what can you do 😄

Bigcat25 · 25/09/2024 13:38

I think it's a lovely name and wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Lemonadeand · 25/09/2024 13:49

I know what you mean. I guess you could tweak it to Kristen.

lotuspocus · 25/09/2024 13:52

I know six Christines in their mid-20s to 30s. One goes by Chrissy and another by Christy, but the others all use Christine.
