Anyone work in a Premier Inn?

fizzypop100 · 22/09/2024 20:28

Our teen slept heavily and wasn't responding to us knocking loudly on his hotel room door and calling his phone. The receptionist had a look but couldn't open it with her key card because he had locked the door from the inside.
She said the only way to open it was the police. Surely there is a way to open the door in these circumstances, without damaging the door ?
(Next time I'm booking a connecting room)

I used to work for an international hotel chain as Reception Supervisor. I could create a master key at reception to open any hotel door. Even if it's locked from the inside, our master key would open the door. We sadly had a guest die in their room, and we had to create a master key to let the police in. We also had a serious fire and had to open doors to ensure the hotel was evacuated (some people thought the fire alarm didn't apply to them). Keycards are set to a certain room number or as a master key. They are overwritten and overwritten over and over as needed. I've never heard of a hotel not being able to open the doors from the outside. Either the receptionist didn't want to, or they didn't have credentials to create the keycard

A sensible answer, thank you

This is really worrying. What if the manager is someone who likes to let himself into guests' rooms in the middle of the night?

OnTheBoardwalk · 22/09/2024 21:10

Room next door to me had alarm going for over 2 hours (before and after breakfast)

i told housekeeping outside and she called 2 other members of staff who opened door and found no one inside

as an 18 year old adult there were no strange circumstances, just no one answering the door. To me that’s no reason to force entry. What if things had gone missing in the room after he'd locked it

I'm very pleased nobody can get into the door of my locked hotel room.

It's not all about you you know!

Your kid did something stupid. Own it.

Which bit was ‘stupid?’ He locked the door from the inside. Same as you say you do.

He slept deeply. That wouldn’t have been deliberate.

You know nothing about people you’re calling stupid. Which makes you stupid.

Your son sounds like a div! I pity the people trying to sleep in nearby rooms just because your son wasnt responding to you. You must know he was a heavy sleeper. How was he expecting to wake up?

Unconvinced8768 · 22/09/2024 21:13

I don’t think they mean ‘origin’ as ‘ethnicity’.

fizzypop100 · 22/09/2024 20:36

Thank you. I can't understand why there isn't a deadlock key for staff to open doors in urgent circumstances?

Unfortunately no reply as yet from him

Itsagrandoldteam · 22/09/2024 21:15

I might be wrong but I didn't think the room card would open the door if it was dead bolted from the inside, so in that case 2 room cards wouldn't make any difference.
My DH stays in the same room as our adult son when we stay in Premier Inn's, he is a deep sleeper and we don't trust him to wake up with his phone alarm.

SailingOnAWave · 22/09/2024 21:16

As someone above mentioned, make sure you have two key cards. This is advice I will remember when my son is this age.

I hope you managed to catch your flight!

I can only assume the safe keeps a log of when it is opened

What do they mean then?

The key card does not open the door when it is locked from inside.

fizzypop100 · 22/09/2024 21:03

None would do that. We wanted to be able to open the door slightly so we could shout him awake

Maybe he was ignoring you as he had decided to stay in the country for longer and was fleeing you? The hotel staff have no idea

Im guessing you didn’t name only your teen on the booking on the room (as they don’t allow under 18s to stay in a room alone). If over 18 then presumably they have the same right as any other adult to not open the door.

”Children aged 16 or 17 years will be permitted to stay in separate room(s) under the responsibility of the parent or guardian and the parent or guardian must also stay in the hotel at all times the children are within the hotel.”

Not the point of the post, but I feel your pain @fizzypop100 when it comes to a teenager who sleeps like the dead. I have one of those and honestly, a brass band could march through the room and he wouldn't stir. I wish he'd been like that as a baby. But no ...😭

kenidorm · 22/09/2024 21:18

The key card does not open the door when it is locked from inside.

The hotel I used to work at, the key cards would open a door if it was locked from the inside. For that reason I put a chair up against the door when I stay alone anywhere now.

idkbroidk · 22/09/2024 21:20

he's 18. AN ADULT. you should have let him miss his flight. he needs to learn the consequences of his actions.

RJ2023 · 22/09/2024 21:20

HappyFitnessQueen · 22/09/2024 20:58

You could have requested two key cards for the room when you checked in. That's what I would do if my teens were staying in a separate room.

Whenever I stay in a Premier Inn there's normally a mechanical lock you can turn on the inside of the door, which I had assumed prevents the keycard from opening the door. If it does, unfortunately two keycards may not help. If that lock doesn't prevent the door from opening from the outside I am going to be more worried about staying in Premier Inns!

idkbroidk · 22/09/2024 21:20

Oh look, another Mumsnet poster who thinks children turn into fully fledged adults at the stroke of midnight on their 18th birthdays. A bit of nuanced thinking wouldn't go amiss. Not everyone has the same level of maturity when they hit 18.

kenidorm · 22/09/2024 21:24

@Lulubo1

The hotel I used to work at, the key cards would open a door if it was locked from the inside.

Right, but the whole thread is about the fact that in this particular hotel they do not.

llamali · 22/09/2024 21:24

Would you want some randomer to be able to unlock your door in the middle of the night while you're sleeping?

DaniMontyRae · 22/09/2024 21:24

fizzypop100 · 22/09/2024 20:53

There was a member of staff and 4 members of family stood outside his room !

Not everything is about you and your situation. The poster you responded to used a well known example of why staff shouldn't be able to access hotel rooms with master keys. Wanting to put women at risk of being raped because your son sleeps through alarms is pretty horrific.

HolyPeaches · 22/09/2024 21:25

fizzypop100 · 22/09/2024 20:48

I think the embarrassment of us all standing there when he finally emerged was enough to stop it happening again. Plus my brother shouting at him 🤦

Shouting at him for what?!

Surely he’s not the first person on earth to sleep through door knocking and phone calls.
