Anyone work in a Premier Inn?

Our teen slept heavily and wasn't responding to us knocking loudly on his hotel room door and calling his phone. The receptionist had a look but couldn't open it with her key card because he had locked the door from the inside.
She said the only way to open it was the police. Surely there is a way to open the door in these circumstances, without damaging the door ?
(Next time I'm booking a connecting room)

You could have requested two key cards for the room when you checked in. That's what I would do if my teens were staying in a separate room.

This is the answer.

I'm very pleased nobody can get into the door of my locked hotel room.

It's not all about you you know!

Your kid did something stupid. Own it.

Waiting for the police to bother getting around to attending seems pretty unpredictable. Why can't these hotels keep a single master key in a "break glass in case of emergency" box?

Finally someone who understands

This is the answer.

This was not offered and I had no idea this was an option

There was a member of staff and 4 members of family stood outside his room !

Yes in this case there was but if hotel staff could just gain entry at will which is more or less what you're suggesting then how would the next Lucy Spraggan be safeguarded.

FawnFrenchieMum · 22/09/2024 21:01

All the people that think the staff should be able to open the door - how would you feel if staff burst in whilst your in the bath / sleeping naked / avoiding your ex-partner who is looking for you / your mother who you are not speaking to etc says they should?

BridgetJonesBigPants · 22/09/2024 21:01

A fire is an emergency. A teen missing a flight because they sleep in isn't. It's annoying, but not a legitimate reason to break into an adult's hotel room.

helpfulperson · 22/09/2024 21:02

Of course it isn't an emergency situation. It's annoying, inconvenient, expensive and many other things but it isn't an emergency. No-one is going to die because of a missed flight.

Have a look at one of the threads about women having strange people walk into their hotel room and you will see why these locks are in place.

Next time you and he will know not to use the deadlock or to get two keys and give you one.

Unconvinced8768 · 22/09/2024 21:02

Good thinking re: 2 cards!! Thanks!

I disagree it wasn’t an urgent situation. He could have been ill or worse. Stuff happens.

Who decides what’s an emergency?

I didn't realise they couldn't get in.

Doesn't help the OP, but this makes me a lot happier about travelling on my own.

None would do that. We wanted to be able to open the door slightly so we could shout him awake

Of course but any person who cannot be raised despite repeated efforts in a locked room surely quickly becomes a serious concern?

I think missing a flight is an urgent situation

Not a police matter though.

It's not about YOU having access, it's about random members of staff in poorly paid jobs then also having access.

This. I would be very unhappy about a random member of staff having the ability to access my room when I had taken all precautions to make myself safe.

The problem is OP still thinks it was urgent.

YOU wouldn’t do that, other not so pleasant parents / ex’s would do that.

You’re struggling to see any situation outside your own. Not everyone is a nice respectable human.

Not with the deadlock on the door.

TheBossOfMe · 22/09/2024 21:07

I think the safety of guests takes priority over the inconvenience of missing a flight because a teenager couldn't wake up on time!

Unconvinced8768 · 22/09/2024 21:08

I’m saying I do think it was urgent!!
if someone is not responding to calls and bangs on the door I think it’s perfectly reasonable to want to get in. Yes, he could have been asleep but he also could have been ill or injured.

just recently I was involved in the (sadly unsuccessful) resuscitation of a 24 year old who’d died in their sleep. These things happen, even if you think they don’t.
