Baby fell off the couch while husband was "watching" him

So earlier today I was in the kitchen, DH in the living room with our 6 month old baby on the couch while he was changing his nappy, he is too busy watching the football and the next thing I shouted him just as the baby was falling off the couch, unfortunately he hit the hard floor and started to cry. Luckily he is ok now and iv been keeping my eye on him ever since so signs of anything serious but I'm so angry at him. I have told him again and again you can't take your eyes off him now that he is rolling, like a nagging wife but for very good reason and now it's happened as he never listens to me.
This is my 3rd baby so I would say I'm an experienced parent whereas this is his first baby, so he has taken a bit of guidance from me and I thought he was doing ok until today.
The problem is I'm meant to be going to Barcelona on Wednesday for a couple of days for a hen do and he is in charge of the 3 children and now after today my gut reaction is to not go as he cannot be trusted, what would you do?

@KezzaMucklowe it was actually the game before the city game, that he claimed he wasn't that bothered about watching so

My dts were prem too - similar sounding gestation.
I get it I really do. However we all make mistakes and it literally sometimes only takes 1 second.
It sounds like he is really upset.
In my experience there's lots of anxiety in the 1st year after having a premature baby. It's such a traumatic experience.
I think you should go away and enjoy your holiday.

Give over. Oooh, football is so exciting and tense that I can't focus on more important things than overpaid grown men running after a ball! Grow up.

You know, it's conceivable that sometimes, just sometimes, people might find things interesting that you don't. And that doesn't make these things worthless. Strange that, as an adult, you don't seem to understand that.

GoldenNuggets08 · 22/09/2024 20:49

I remember when my little one fell off the bed, I was distraught. I would hate to think my OH thought less of me as a parent and that I couldn't br trusted as a result of it. His reaction sounds like he won't let it happen again!

PlayDadiFreyr · 22/09/2024 20:49

I was both watching and reacting to my son falling off a chair today. I caught him, but he twisted so that his head bumped the floor nonetheless.

Cheeky little beggar loved it, but point being, it's easy to get wrong!

Funnily enough, my husband was very premature, and he hates how anxious his mum is around babies. She's constantly taking him away from perfectly safe activities. Please try and relax a little, play is so important for babies.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 22/09/2024 20:51

My DD rolled off the bed right in front of me when she was a baby and it had happened before when DH and I were both in the room (didn’t realise she could roll then). It happens

DrinkElephants · 22/09/2024 21:13

It happens. My baby fell off our bed because I didn’t realise she could throw herself forwards not just sideways! I was caught off guard but she was fine didn’t even realise what happened. It’s one of those things tbh. This doesn’t sound like he deliberately did it and when baby starts moving more it can really catch you off guard.

CyanFawn · 22/09/2024 21:22

Sure you've made some mistakes as the kids have been growing nobodys perfect, as you said it's your 3rd. He's probably learned from that experience how much babies wriggle and by the sounds of won't be doing it again...

BTW my 6 month old threw himself backwards out my arms the other day (4th child). He cried I cried he's absolutely fine and life continues

saltinesandcoffeecups · 22/09/2024 21:27

Did you make a similar mistake with your other 2 children? I think you’d be hard pressed to find one who didn’t.

coxesorangepippin · 22/09/2024 21:27

he was really upset and started to cry

^

The baby or the dad??

Facetious, but yeah, dad needs to have eyes in the back of his head

He probably can’t be trusted.
Most men can’t.

Gross.

Llttledrummergirl · 22/09/2024 21:34

All 3 of mine rolled off the bed when they were in my care, fortunately dh still trusted me to take care of them.

Accidents happen despite the best of intentions. Mine are all adults now so I obviously learned from the experience.

Go to Barcelona and have fun.

Mayorq · 22/09/2024 21:35

That's amazing that none of your 3 kids ever fell over or bumped themselves while you were minding them. Fair play OP.

Ruthietuthie · 22/09/2024 21:36

My baby fell off the bed, quite a high bed at that, on to a hard wooden floor. One night, my husband was so tired, walking him up and down the corridor, that he drifted asleep and walked straight into a door, banging the child's head hard. Both were mistakes - mine caused by lack of attention.
Mistakes happen. The baby is fine.
I would feel dreadful if my response to a mistake was to make my husband cry (I don't think I've ever made him cry) and to cause the whole family to become upset. This is an out of proportion reaction.
Your poor husband - the dynamics (you've had children before, he hasn't, so you rule the roost) are obvious here - take care that you aren't alienating and undermining him which will cause long-term damage to your family relationships.
Calm down, go on your trip, trust that you picked a good person to be your baby's father, and accept that mistakes happen.

@llamali he was really upset and started to cry that he hurt his son and he only has himself to blame and that I was right he was too busy watching the football. He has spent the rest of the day playing and cuddling him.

Sounds like he had learnt the lesson and this could indeed be a blessing in disguise. Your son is okay and your husband can now really see the impact of this. We’ve all slipped up with our first.

the weekend away is probably what all of you need!

You really think you did something here.

Of course I understand different interests. But the FOOTBALL ABOVE ALL ELSE stance is ridiculous. To the point where it's OK to half-ass looking after your child in a tricky moment because MAN CHASES BALL. Oh, but it's OK because it was a "tense game". FFS. If a woman had done this because she had her eyes glued to Love Island or something, she'd have been eviscerated. But football, it's OK.

Lorddenning1 · 22/09/2024 21:57

@Mayorq they have all of them now, my 2 older sons are my husband's step children and it happened too with their dad but on the bed and they fell on a carpet so not as bad, this is why I always tell him to be careful when they start to roll, based on past experience, if I ever need to grab a nappy or anything I tend to keep an hand on his belly to make sure he doesn't roll, I'm not a prefect parent myself, but recently I have been telling him lots as sometime he props him up on a pillow and the baby only needs to roll a bit and he will fall.

Are you just blatantly ignoring all of the comments on this thread from women who have accidentally had their child fall off a couch or bed while they were watching them ooorrrr....????

sunsetsandboardwalks · 22/09/2024 22:01

How would you feel if you made a mistake and your son got hurt, and your DH was furious at you for it?

Was it ideal? Of course not, but it was an accident and it could just as easily been you who was distracted and let him roll.

Screamingabdabz · 22/09/2024 22:01

I wouldn’t trust a man who thinks watching football is more crucial than watching his young baby doesn’t fall and get hurt. His priorities are all wrong.

Lorddenning1 · 22/09/2024 22:02

@Ruthietuthie that's quite a leap that you think I made my husband cry, he got upset after the incident when we were talking about what happened, because he knew it was because he was watching the football and he blamed himself.

Pretty sure I'd be equally understanding to a woman who accidentally made this mistake, regardless of what they were watching. But sure.

Edit: whoops. Somehow replied to the wrong post. Apologies. Was supposed to be for the Football Hater.

Sapphire387 · 22/09/2024 22:04

OP, I think this is your anxiety talking. No, it's not ideal, but pretty much every baby has rolled off the sofa, bed, or similar. Have you forgotten what it's like to have a toddler who is constantly falling over and knocking into things? Your husband has hopefully learned his lesson.

Lorddenning1 · 22/09/2024 22:06

@Sapphire387 I think you are right, I explained further up the thread that he was premature and could have died so I worry about him more with his feeding and development, he spent time in neonatal and was so tiny that I still think of him as fragile.
