To think most people can’t list every item of clothing they currently own

As the title said most - I’m sure people who just like a basic capsule wardrobe can or those really not interested in clothes.

I’m doing a huge clothes cleanse at the moment and I’m so embarrassed, multiple of items that are similar, trainers I don’t remember buying etc

Anyone else?

Any recommendations for wardrobe apps? Not so much for buying as I'm avoiding buying anything. In fact that's helping my clothes actually reaching the end of their life while in my hands now too.

I’ve got that much clothes that I literally have nothing to wear. I don’t know what I own and it’s quite disorganised. I end up wearing the same few outfits and often I’m stood at the driver waiting for clothes to be dry enough to put on so I can leave the house. I also have items of clothing I’ve bought with no plan of how to wear it and I can then end up buying an array of things to try and make it an outfit but never quite pull it together so it’s never worn. I dislike probably 80% of what I own.
It’s ridiculous and I’m determined to work up the energy to having a major major clear out and create a capsule wardrobe. I just don’t know where to start with it as it’s just one corner of my extremely chaotic life!

soupfiend · 22/09/2024 15:59

I was just thinking today I need to find space for an extra wardrobe!

mitogoshigg · 22/09/2024 16:04

When I moved i donated 6 bin bags of clothes and ragged even more, shameful as whilst some were past their best, many I had just forgotten about and now outgrown Grin

I don’t think there’s any value in being able to list your clothes off the top of your head.

I have tonnes of clothes and I love them all. I like to look put together, I like to have fun with clothes, I like to look appropriate for the event.

Me too, I like having lots of options. When we're on holiday I have a day outfit which is different every day and then to go out in the evening which is different each time. I like to match shoes with various outfits and thats not including 'scruffies' for sitting about it and also things that get dirty if we go out walking or cycling

I remember a thread recently where people were aghast that someone might have more than 2 coats, Ive got about 8, they all serve a different purpose. Then I have about 5 leather/suede jackets, again all for different looks.

Countingcactus · 22/09/2024 16:24

I definitely couldn’t list everything, but I’ve never not remembered buying something or bought something similar to something I already own without realising

MartinsSpareCalculator · 22/09/2024 16:25

I definitely could. I have a sort out every couple of months and can easily visualise my wardrobe. Everything is organised in the right place so I could tell you everything I own in order of where it is in the wardrobe.

angellinaballerina7 · 22/09/2024 16:26

I filled an entire walk in wardrobe recently and I don’t know why I kept most of it. It makes me feel a bit queasy when I think about it properly tbh!

CornedBeef451 · 22/09/2024 16:43

I probably could if I had to. I hate shopping so have the bare minimum I can get away with.

I definitely know what footwear I have, 8 pairs total including my gardening crocs. 2 coats, one waterproof, one warm. 2 pairs of jeans, 2 pairs of joggers, 5 pairs of summer trousers. 4 pyjama bottoms, 6 vests, approx 14 tops. Not sure how many socks and pants. 2 proper bras, 4 non wired bras. Inexplicably 6 pairs of trampoline socks from various kids places and, at a guess, 4 pairs of tights and one pair of chub rub shorts. One hoody, 4 cardigans. Oh, just remembered 2 dresses and a formal coat that doesn't fit that I need to get rid of.

I can't imagine having so many clothes I forget what I have, the horror of shopping for it all!

TylerEndicott · 22/09/2024 17:28

@Homebird8 the app I use is Stylebook. I think it cost £5 but has been so worth it.
What takes up time is actually listing what you already own. For anything new I lift the photo off the shop's website which makes it quicker and easier but for older clothes that aren't available online I've had to take photos myself.

The closet section has got different categories but you can tailor it and make subcategories so for "Tops" I've then split it into long sleeved, t-shirts, sweatshirts etc. Handbags split into crossbody, clutch, totes.

You add things like size, fabric composition, price, special notes. If you're someone who sells unwanted clothes on Vinted or eBay it's helpful as you can see what you paid for it new, or if the fabric care label can't be read because of repeated washing you've got a record of it.

I literally emptied all my wardrobes and tried to be ruthless with what I kept. Then I bought new coat-hangers those slimline ones so saved quite a bit of space and it looked much better.

It has helped me work out what I need each season and what I definitely don't need more of.

Childfreecatlady · 22/09/2024 17:29

I couldn't list all of my clothes, coats, bags or shoes tbh. We are about to move and I think I will end up with a large amount of items to sell or donate. I also have quite a few pairs of beautiful designer shoes that have only been worn a few times BC they are so uncomfortable and I have no clue what to do with them. Their resale value is prob half what I paid but in my head I will just see that as a loss, even though I never wear them.

First world problems I suppose.

Childfreecatlady · 22/09/2024 17:31

alarmallamaduck · 22/09/2024 05:52

I think I probably could, or at least I know well enough not to re-buy whst I already have.
That said, I still have a lot of clothes! A large chest of drawers is stuffed full, plus a big double wardrobe from Ikea, plus a large basket which is where my underwear live because there’s no room in my chest of drawers!

For those of you who don’t remember what you’ve got - where do you keep all these clothes?!

We are converting a large double bedroom into a full dressing room, this is where I will be keeping everything though I know I definitely need to have a clear out regardless.

BloodyHellBob · 22/09/2024 17:46

I definitely couldn't list everything in my wardrobe but I'm currently doing a huge clear out. Over the summer I've got rid of about 6 massive bin bags full of clothes. My next step is selling some on Vinted and then I'm going to buy myself a new wardrobe (an actual wardrobe!) and have only the clothes that I love and wear in it...at least that's the dream!!

Alli88 · 22/09/2024 17:53

I can. I have three dresses, 2 skirts, one top, 2 cardigans, one pair of boots, 1 pair of flip-flops and 1 pair of of shoes.

ShamblesRock · 22/09/2024 17:56

Some things I could, others not so much.

So black work trousers is 3. T-shirts would just be lots.

I've just got a lot of new clothes and I need a good wardrobe sorted out. I have quite a bit that I like but just never wear.

Duchess379 · 22/09/2024 18:44

Yeah, I'm a clothes hoarder. I've got dresses/shirts/jumpers that I've had for yonks but will never wear. I moved 11yrs ago and the biggest inconvenience was the amount of clothing & shoes I had. I've got high heels I won't get rid of but can't wear because I have arthritis in my knees 🙄
