To think most people can’t list every item of clothing they currently own

As the title said most - I’m sure people who just like a basic capsule wardrobe can or those really not interested in clothes.

I’m doing a huge clothes cleanse at the moment and I’m so embarrassed, multiple of items that are similar, trainers I don’t remember buying etc

Anyone else?

alarmallamaduck · 22/09/2024 05:52

I think I probably could, or at least I know well enough not to re-buy whst I already have.
That said, I still have a lot of clothes! A large chest of drawers is stuffed full, plus a big double wardrobe from Ikea, plus a large basket which is where my underwear live because there’s no room in my chest of drawers!

For those of you who don’t remember what you’ve got - where do you keep all these clothes?!

Sharontheodopolodous · 22/09/2024 06:20

About 6 months ago, work asked us to have a clear out so they could have a jumble sale

7 black bags of clothes, scarves and shoes later,it hadn't even made a dent (dp donated one tee)

It was a bit of a shock-i had another two clear outs and stopped buying clothes unless I needed, rather than wanted it

I cull my clothes every 3 months. Everything fits in one double wardrobe and one chest of drawers.
I only wear trousers.. no skirts or dresses. I moved around a lot in my 20s and I became quite minimalistic from then.

BusterGonad · 22/09/2024 06:23

I think I could, I may miss a few dresses as I don't wear them often, therefore not remembered so well. I've moved countries every year for the past 4 years, each time my clothes go to the bare minimal. The biggest cull was just over a year ago, now I'm restocking and trying to buy things of natural fibres and things I love.

Neinneinnein · 22/09/2024 06:31

I have a good clear out every so often, so while I cannot list everything I could probably list around 80%. Lots of folk have far too many clothes, there's no shame in it but equally it's probably beneficial to have regular sort outs, especially if you enjoy buying more clothes and/or permanently change size.

Sprinkly · 22/09/2024 06:33

Oooh do you have vinted?

Neinneinnein · 22/09/2024 06:33

SunnieShine · 21/09/2024 22:10

Why would you want to?

To know if you need more or not.
To plan what to wear.
To feel organised.

Bgfe · 22/09/2024 06:41

Some style icon once said people should have 8 outfits (plus sports clothes and nightwear etc).

I would love to have fewer clothes and less expectation to wear something different all the time. Be more Steve Jobs! Same outfit every day.

I treat my work wardrobe like that. Black trousers. Top. Cardigans. Probably have 8 outfits of that combo. I am not a style icon!

TerfTalking · 22/09/2024 06:57

I’m like you OP, so many similar items and things with tags on.

After a recent weight loss I did a cull, and found dozens of unworn items that I’d bought and didn’t fit at the time.

i have about 8 pairs of new or barely worn black sandals. Probably 20 coats and jackets, six pairs of similar jeans.

When the kids moved out DH and I (he’s worse than me) took over their fitted wardrobes. We now have four bedrooms with our clothes and coats in them all, and a cupboard under the stairs with many more coats in.

I’m sure it wouldn’t look as bad if DH did a cull too, but he doesn’t get round to it.

shiverm · 22/09/2024 07:35

I'm tryying to have less clothes. I used to be an avid charity shopper and vintage eBay shopper (in my 20s, when eBay and charity shops had more quality items) and bought some amazing stuff. But that stuff it in bags now and reminds me of my 20s a bit too much. Ive been selling old beloved items on vinted lately and have managed to raise quite a fund. I've bought two items from the funds that I'd never had considered before due to cost, a quilted linen gingham dressing gown and a cashmere jumper from toast (cold house!) I get such a lot of satisfaction not from the money part but from the volume of stuff going down! I'd love to keep going but I do find listing things a total drag. There's this ridiculously priced sun hat I'm fantasising about, and if I can sell another load of older things I'm gonna get it 😎

Maybe one day I'll be able to list my clothes?! (I do though buy multiples of trousers that I love though so I can wear them for years like a cartoon character. Love finding bnwt multiples on selling sites).

Sorry that was a ramble!

Bodeganights · 22/09/2024 08:18

I could list 90% of it I think.

A decade ago I moved house, so I did a sort of swedish death cleaning thing with my clothes which were many. I was too brutal so although it worked for the house move, I felt like I didnt have enough, so I bought more.
I filled up a triple and double wardrobe in a few years. With tat.
At some point I realised that I just dont want the massive choice and I only wear a few items often, also have more disposable income so can buy better quality.

So to combat the overflow of clothes my rule is one item in, two items out.
Same with bedding and towels and teatowels and shoes etc btw.

It makes me really think about if I want it, will wear it, want to lose 2 other items enough to have it.
I've been looking for the perfect quality and timeless leather jacket for months. It's got to be the right one, because two very good items have to go.
At this point I dont really need to do the two out thing, but it made me see just how much i bought without thinking it through.

Also some sentimental stuff in the attic and one day I'll get rid but not quite yet.

FiveTreeHill · 22/09/2024 08:27

I don't think I could just list it but I definitely would know looking at something if I already own it or similar, and there definitely isn't things I don't remember buying

I do have a lot of clothes though, or at least I thought I did! But I try and only buy things I really like

CrunchyCarrot · 22/09/2024 08:33

I could probably list about 90% of them. I don't have an excessive amount, in fact I've been doing 'Swedish death cleaning' because I don't want my DP to be left with a huge amount of my stuff when my time comes. Got rid of 5 bags of clothes a couple of days ago. Don't buy a lot of stuff and only have a couple of pairs of shoes. I need to get rid of more stuff though, but not clothes as that's been done, now onto books!

Cantonet · 22/09/2024 08:34

I've listed all the clothes I've bought over the last 2 years on the Whering App.
This was after my kids pointed out I was re-buying similar items every year. I'm certainly aware of duplicates in my wardrobe now.

My old clothes & jackets are often re-worn by my dds. 20 year old brown leather jackets/leather trenches/Sheepskins are now back in fashion & have been worn over the last two years.
One rifles through my Cashmere & wears large cowl neck sweaters off the shoulder. Plus my silk dressing gowns & blouses were worn frequently this summer by dd2.
So I would say don't get rid of quality clothes if you have dds.

KnittedCardi · 22/09/2024 08:35

I definitely coulds and my husband's and kids. I run a pretty strict household "stuff" wise. Twice a year everything is taken out, and kept, chucked or recycled. I do the same with books, toys etc.

I've aways been like that. Very ruthless, but OCD. I sometimes regret clearing stuff, the kids definitely do!

I think some of it stems from DM not having any sentimentality on possessions as they lost pretty much everything during WW2.

I could probably list about 80%.

If I was to empty every item, I'm sure there would be a few that I very forgotten about, I moved house last August so had a massive cull then.

There's certainly a few items that mock me each time I open the wardrobe as they don't fit nicely due to my meno belly, mainly summer dresses but I think I'll get rid of those next year if I think they actually don't fit again as I didn't wear any of them this year so they're just taking up space.

These days I mainly wear jeans, t-shirt and trainers so I'm not even sure why I bother buying anything else!

Tagyoureit · 22/09/2024 08:52

Sorry not why that has tagged you @AuntieMarys

LoquaciousPineapple · 22/09/2024 09:09

I couldn't list everything off the top of my head, but there aren't any items I'd be surprised to see if I went through the wardrobe. I regularly declutter and only buy clothes I love and would wear frequently. If I don't wear something regularly or it doesn't fit anymore, I donate it or sell it.

sunonthetrees · 22/09/2024 09:14

I don’t have lots of clothes and I still couldn’t do it…

Does make me think that I probably ought to do a clothes sort out though - to work out what I really ought to buy… I wear the same 2 things all winter and they have holes now…

rickyrickygrimes · 22/09/2024 10:07

Yes I could. DH and I share one double wardrobe and one 3-drawer chest and a coat rack. There’s storage for 6 /7 pairs of shoes and boots each, so that’s what we have. I usually things until they are done, then it’s one in - one out.

i grew up in a house full of stuff, especially my mums clothes. It has multiplied since we moved out and she now has a triple wardrobe in her room plus a double wardrobe in the spare room, plus coats / hats etc in yet another spare room wardrobe. When we visit, we end up living out of suitcases because there’s nowhere to hang anything 🙄. She doesn’t wear even 25% of it but keeps buying more because she can’t be bothered to sort it. It will be left for my sister and I to do 🙄.

Unsurprisingly both of us are extremely minimal with clothes and match stuff to storage. Not the other way round.

Completelyjo · 22/09/2024 10:11

I don’t think there’s any value in being able to list your clothes off the top of your head.

I have tonnes of clothes and I love them all. I like to look put together, I like to have fun with clothes, I like to look appropriate for the event.

kardashianklone · 22/09/2024 10:31

I had this exact thought during the pandemic and downloaded the ‘Save your wardrobe’ app and it tracks every single item I own, how many times I wear it, how sustainable and ethical the brand is and what colours I mostly wear, and I can plan my outfits in advance. So now I reckon I could list them all just because I see them on an app so frequently.

honestasever · 22/09/2024 15:42

I like to know what I’ve got as it helps me to put items together without too much thought. I know if I pull out a certain pair of trousers or skirt, exactly which tops and shoes work with it. It makes holiday packing simple and everyday life simpler.

IncessantNameChanger · 22/09/2024 15:51

I have at least 250 individual items of clothes which is way too much. I'm trying to start sorting my wardrobe into outfits and aim to get down to about half or less what I have now. Part of the issue is clothes from.pre covid times where I got dressed up to go out or smart casual for work. I feel like life's changed since then and I can wear the same dress for the school run and dinner out and I even wore it to a wedding. A few nice M&S and Fat face dresses covers every possibility as life gets more casual. My wardrobe is stuck in my past
