To think most people can’t list every item of clothing they currently own

As the title said most - I’m sure people who just like a basic capsule wardrobe can or those really not interested in clothes.

I’m doing a huge clothes cleanse at the moment and I’m so embarrassed, multiple of items that are similar, trainers I don’t remember buying etc

Anyone else?

Absolutely no way could I list everything. I probably couldn't even list just coats and jackets. I have way too many clothes. Lots of bags in the loft too. I worked in fashion for years so bought way too much. Now I don't buy much but would love to do a clear out.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 21/09/2024 22:03

I was really pleased the other week when I found a pair of jeans from my favourite brand, in my size, on sale for a really cheap price.

Until I looked in my wardrobe a few days later and realised I already own a literally identical pair.

No33 · 21/09/2024 22:06

I just moved house. I was disgusted at my amount of clothing.

I then went into the loft and found even bloody more.

Teenagerantruns · 21/09/2024 22:08

I have far to many cheap leggings and tee shirts not am sure how many But could list my coats, shoes and nice clothes for going out. I also now only have 4 jumpers and 7 bras after having a clear last week.

ResultsMayVary · 21/09/2024 22:08

I don't know about other people but I certainly couldn't list mine!

Currently doing a cull and it's partly a trip down memory lane (I have clothes many decades old) or a realisation that I am a dumping ground for other people's unwanted clothes - many of the clothes I was gifted second hand. About to get rid of three bags of clothes and even that doesn't put a serious dent in the number.

Monvelo · 21/09/2024 22:08

I could give it a fair go.

SunnieShine · 21/09/2024 22:10

Why would you want to?

1033NWCAL069 · 21/09/2024 22:17

I probably could and I have quite a lot of clothes. They are not fashionable or anything but I'm very particular about what I buy. I love my clothes and spend a lot of time picking out exactly what I want. If I don't like something I return it or get rid of it.

NZDreaming · 21/09/2024 22:47

@camrtal i could probably give a good run down of most of what is in my wardrobe. I only have what’s in there - nothing stored in the loft or under the bed. I don’t buy clothes regularly, maybe twice a year I’ll buy a handful of new things but I do get rid as well. I used to have a lot of shoes but recently sold most of them as I just wasn’t wearing them post pandemic.

I don’t have a huge interest in clothes and dislike shopping but I take care of what I have. I have some items that I still wear which I’ve owned for about 15years. I try not to buy fast fashion anymore and can’t understand the mentality many people seem to have nowadays of buying something new every week. I read something the other day where a lady was complaining she had to ‘throw out items that still had tags on’ as she’d moved in with a partner and she didn’t have enough room.

I get that some people love clothes and that’s fine but I wish the focus was more on quality over quantity.

TylerEndicott · 21/09/2024 22:56

I use an app, whenever I buy something new I paste photo and details on there, items are categorised.
It's been really helpful in working out what I need, whilst reminding myself what I already have.

camrtal · 21/09/2024 23:00

SunnieShine · 21/09/2024 22:10

Why would you want to?

It’s not that deep, certainly not enough for the passive aggressive aibu attitude.

I just thought it would be an interesting discussion and I was enjoying reading the comments until I got to yours, But there always has to be one I guess.

I’m tempted to start listing things that are hung up, in the spare bedroom, in my wardrobe - otherwise it’ll just get forgotten about and never worn.

TimelyIntervention · 21/09/2024 23:03

God no I couldn’t even begin to list mine.

However. I bet I could fairly easily give you a list of clothes which would cover 95% of what I’ve worn in the last year, plus a few special occasion items. There is definitely a lesson there which I am steadfastly ignoring!

TomatoSandwiches · 21/09/2024 23:07

YANBU

I started a clear out today and itemised everything I want to go. Managed to get 27 items done, photoed and packaged but still have 2 double wardrobes full to go 😫

Ooh, what's the app?

honestasever · 21/09/2024 23:14

I could mostly list what I have - I think!
Would probably miss some things out but I don’t have that many clothes tbh

ThirstyThursday · 21/09/2024 23:15

I could probably make a pretty good list of about 80% of 'specific clothes' (like 'white linen shirt'' grey linen shirt' ' bright pink cardi') but I have a 'pile' of leggings, many t shirts & loads of socks.

I have some in the loft which are sentimental & not taking up space I need for anything else. So no harm in them.

Divebar2021 · 21/09/2024 23:21

I have the Stylebook App and have probably three quarters of my clothes on there. I know the cost, types of fabrics / colours etc and because I record what o wear daily I know what has been the best / worse value. Even knowing I’ve bought a lot of it second hand I still feel I have too much.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 21/09/2024 23:30

I think I could get to 90/95%. And the bits I didn't remember would be 'Oh duh, yes of course!' when seen again. I don't follow fashion and have had most of my clothes for 7 or 8 years at least which I suppose helps to 'cement' them in my brain. I try not to buy too many new things (can't bloody afford them any more, that helps!) so as to not get overwhelmed with gubbins I don't need, but my one weakness is socks. I love the cute patterned ones from FatFace, with bees and mice and things all over them. I do have about 40 pairs of socks altogether! They are the one thing that accumulate faster than I wear them out.

DramaAlpaca · 22/09/2024 01:10

I couldn't possibly itemise mine. I have so many clothes. Far too many, really. I just love clothes and fashion, luckily have a decent amount of disposable income, and don't restrict what I buy. I know I need to learn to be more discerning.

I've got a few bags ready to take to the charity shop when I've time, but that's the tip of the iceberg. I need to do a proper sort out.

DelphiniumBlue · 22/09/2024 01:34

I have far too many clothes, and lots of them don't fit any more. I have weeded some out, 3 bags to charity shop recently, but I still have too many. If I put my mind to it, I could probably list most of them. It would take a while though!

Sallyingon · 22/09/2024 02:29

I think I could do it. I have quite a lot of clothes but I know them all well and wear everything

Bjorkdidit · 22/09/2024 05:25

Well to be fair, that is what you asked.

Your title is misleading and you've probably used the wrong section.

Posting 'AIBU to think most people can’t list every item of clothing they currently own' reasonably raises the question 'why would you want to'.

If you want to chat about how you have an embarrassingly large wardrobe, you'd have been better off posting in chat about having an excessive amount of clothes, shoes and accessories, instead of a contrived AIBU where the answer would be that YANBU because most people probably can't.

autienotnaughty · 22/09/2024 05:29

We had a house fire a few years ago and I lost all my clothes. I now have a single wardrobe (as in one door) and three shelves. I could absolutely list my wardrobe contents (although knickers and socks would be a rough guess)
