To ask if there are any new treatments/pills for OCD.

I have OCD thoughts always worse when I'm stressed or overwhelmed.
Why does the stress bring them on, today I feel more calm, and less thoughts?
Start of the week was bad though.
Secondly are there any new treatments coming out?
I wonder if one day there will be some sort of pill to banish them altogether?
Currently take Citalopram.

Propranolol not new but works very well when overwhelmed

Brobdingnagian · 20/09/2024 16:55

I used to be on Citalopram but when my OCD got really bad I switched to Lofepramine (a TCA) which has worked well for the best part of 15 years, although I’m struggling a bit now after a triggering event.
amitriptyline though, also listed below, which I was given for nerve pain, was absolutely awful for me. Propranolol helps a bit for when I’m feeling very overwhelmed.

TCAs may also be recommended for other mental health conditions, such as OCD and bipolar disorder. Examples of TCAs include amitriptyline, clomipramine, dosulepin, imipramine, lofepramine and nortriptyline. Some types of TCAs, such as amitriptyline, can also be used to treat chronic nerve pain.

I don't think any anti depressant gets rid of it totally though. I was wondering if one day there will be anything that eliminates it altogether?

I don't have that, but solution focused hypnotherapy has worked wonders for me with other things. It's not weird or controlling, it helps you understand how your subconscious mind is working and how you can help it to change its way of reacting.

Do you combine your medication with therapy?

Choice4567 · 20/09/2024 17:43

I was in fluoxetine for OCD, it worked quite well

I am on 200mg sertraline and this is the only medication and the only dose that works the best.

@Sprinkles211 Propranolol made me worse. I was terrified that my heart would stop. I stopped taking it. Did you have any issues when you started? I only tried for a few months, but I'm considering trying again.

WhatMe123 · 20/09/2024 18:26

Sertraline combined with cbt using exposure and response prevention is the optimum treatment op 😊 it's what's recommended in the nice guidelines

Agree, why does that happen.
It can come and go.

I think because mostly it's not completely cured, it's managed. Sometimes/often the symptoms aren't particularly noticeable but if you're tired, stressed etc it can get a bit worse for a while. I have a physical chronic illness, as well as MH problems, and that also tends to get a bit worse temporarily when I'm ill / stressed / very tired.
