AIBU to ask how to respond to recruiters when they ask this?

I don't want my answer to influence anything to come?

I don't think it's a bizarre question, you waste everyone's time when the budget is 40 and you are on 65 and want an increase.

I've recently said currently on x looking to achieve x.

It makes no sense to say you're on X and want Y instead of just saying you want Y.

As an employer I always want to know current salary. I had an applicant once who said they were an experienced finance business partner with 5+ years experience in a fast growing FMCG company. Turns out they were basically doing the role of an accounts clerk with a glorified job title, working in a start up family business earning £25k a year. The job wasn’t a suitable fit.

I’ve always been honest about what I earn and what I expect to earn but it’s entirely optional to put at this stage. If you tell them then make it clear what you expect to be paid as-well.

I have worked for many corporates where you are not allowed to disclose your salary, so I always tell them that. Never had and issues
