Just wondering how much skinny people eat in a day and if I am over eating?

Do you go for whole days without eating? I'm not a doctor but I wouldn't have thought 800 calories would be considered "healthy" for an adult woman, especially if you're not overweight/trying to lose weight.

I can go a whole weekend without eating. Less so now. It’s not particularly deliberate it just happens. When I used to eat what is considered normally I could pile weight on and still feel hungry. I realised it wasn’t hunger but unstable blood sugars. I am definitely not advocating my regime but it has afforded me health benefits. Like I said if I’m really hungry I will eat. I view food as just fuel now rather than something pleasurable

Size 6-8 but I am petite and always been this size. In my late forties I am now 7-8 pounds more than in my twenties but same clothes size.
I never followed a diet, but I am generally very active.

I don't have any restrictions and tend to vary my ingredients a lot. Generally speaking comparing my diet to others I'd say:

  • I don't eat lots of carbs and very rarely in the evening
  • I don't snack much, perhaps a banana or some cheese or a couple of crackers mid afternoon, but not every day
  • I think the biggest thing I always noticed is that I am satisfied with much smaller portions of most. It physically hurts eating too much and I get bloated.
  • I do small breakfast but tend to be protein. I like it and I don't get hungry/have good energy levels until lunch.
broccolienthusiast · 18/09/2024 15:26

Roughly ~2500 calories a day, loads of peanut butter and all plant based :) size 6

MaltipooMama · 18/09/2024 15:27

I'm a size 8-10 and 5'5 and my day normally looks something like this:

Breakfast - maybe cereal or toast, McDonald's on a Saturday or sometimes nothing at all!
Lunch - ham salad sandwich and crisps, or as I'm on mat leave I might make a more meal-y lunch like pesto Parmesan pasta or leftovers from dinner the night before
Dinner - this is varied, always meat of some kind though, mainly chicken or beef but sometimes fish or pork, lots of veg or salad (always one or the other) and a carb. I love potatoes so it's normally that but last night was rice. I do like pasta too
I also have 3-4 cups of tea/coffee throughout the day

Weekends is a takeaway normally on a Saturday, and big roast on a Sunday. I have a big appetite so my dinner portions are huge but I cook everything from scratch and reduce a lot of the pre-made sauces from supermarkets

5’2”, pushing 50, size 4-6.
Using yesterday as a typical example:
Breakfast: small bowl of porridge and fresh fruit
Mid morning: satsuma
Lunch: Home made veg risotto (small portion) and a few squares of dark chocolate (3 maybe?)
Mid afternoon: avocado mashed on toast
Dinner: home made veg spag bol (medium portion, but eaten v slowly)
Before bed: banana
Plus lots and lots of unsweetened, black, caffein free tea.

This gives me hope, a lot more than I expected a size 4 would be able to eat, especially at 50!

PoodlesForeverLove · 18/09/2024 15:28

I don't know if this is helpful @Mamabear04 but I lost 30lbs by watching what I ate and not having more than 1500 calories per day. The weight loss was about 1 to 2 lbs a week, over many months, so slow enough not to ever feel starved, nor did it come off so quick that it piled right back on. It stayed off. I also started increasing my activities, so walking fast for 3-4 miles per day instead of just 2 miles. Initially I cut out any really high fat foods like bacon, cheese, ice cream and high calorie empty things like alcohol. But for the most part I ate the same foods I've always eaten and enjoyed, and I think this is key. You need to know how much you're putting in each time and at the same time not get obsessed with it and you need to feel like you're not missing out.

you're forgetting to mention the endless exercise you must be doing.

Flashcardsagain · 18/09/2024 15:28

Age is a huge factor here. I could eat tons in my 20s, quite a lot in my 30s. Now I'm 40 I have had to drastically cut calories and increase exercise to maintain.

yes, I should add, I'm early 50s. Was very slim / skinny until late 40s (covid confinement).

People always say this but I've never been able to eat that much without gaining weight or maintaining an obese weight, regardless of age bracket.

jolota · 18/09/2024 15:29

It's not really that simple, people have different metabolisms, different exercise levels, different health issues etc.
I lived on chocolate bars when I was at my skinniest (6/8), but I was very stressed with work, didn't have time for proper food/lunches and spent a lot of the day on my feet. So skinny but absolutely not healthy at all anyway.
I also look at one of my friends who eats in a similar way to me now, but is far more active yet is 2 sizes larger - its just really not simple to compare yourself to what others eat and assume you will have exactly the same weight journey.
I'm a 10/12 now, with a toddler, no where near as active as I'd like to be. I started eating big portions when hungry while breast feeding and am struggling to bring my appetite back down, I eat relatively healthily but no longer breast feeding means the calories are sticking in a way they didn't before (size 10 before pregnancy and until my daughter was about 18 months old).
I think I am lucky genetically/health wise, rather than having a really healthy diet & active lifestyle.
For completeness:

  • 1 cup of coffee with oat milk
  • Green/herbal tea x 2
  • Coconut water
  • sourdough sandwich with figs and cream cheese
  • a bell pepper
  • handful of brazil nuts
  • satsuma
  • a biscuit
  • dinner will be lamb with vegetables (think there's broccoli in the fridge)
  • Only drink wine/alcohol on the weekend if with friends/family so maybe 2-3 times a month

Though thinking about it, I have almost naturally done 16/8 fasting for years because I don't tend to feel hungry in the morning; so I tend to eat lunch around midday and dinner around 6pm. I did eat earlier in the day when first breast feeding but have since gone back to lunch/dinner only. I suppose since having a baby and introducing coffee into my life, I've probably broken my fast with coffee most days though, so perhaps that's irrelevant now.

LaerealSilverhand · 18/09/2024 15:29

Whatever I want. Also cycle 100-150 miles per week and lift weights 3 times a week.

If you are a size 10 and the same height as you and the same basic activity level as you

Otherwise it's meaningless

Yes, and also age.

HesterRoon · 18/09/2024 15:31

I’m a 10. Breakfast is 2 slices of toast and marmalade followed by homemade granola and kefir. Lunch is a subway wrap or leftovers or salad with can of tuna. Followed by banana, orange and berries with Greek yoghurt. Packet of mints. When I get home, I have a piece of bread with peanut butter. Dinner is fish, chips, salad or chicken with squash and other vegetables, veg chili, cottage pie etc. Then a chocolate eclair for pudding, crumble, or chocolate. I like sweet things but generally have them at mealtimes. I don’t really snack between meals, maybe the odd biscuit or hot cross bun if I feel like it. I’d rather have decent meals-and also at home, we cook the vast majority of our food.

ranchdressing · 18/09/2024 15:32

Different every day but i ONLY eat whole foods. Well, on 13 days of every 14.

That means nothing processed, not even pasta or bread really.

Just pure ingredients.

ZanyPombear · 18/09/2024 15:32

DoubleParent · 18/09/2024 14:49

Today -

Sausage sandwich for breakfast at work around 9am, but more usually I just have a cup of tea and two chocolate digestives as my breakfast about 10am. I had both of those today.

Tuna and tomato sandwich and McCain Microchips, and some homemade carrot cake for dinner. Can of coke.

Fish and chips for tea, probably another cup of tea and a biscuit.

Cheese on toast and cereal before bed. Apple and a banana somewhere through the day.

I run about 6 miles once a week, no other exercise really.

Edited

are you one of the ones that specify wether you’ve had lurpak and not just ordinary spread

Funkyslippers · 18/09/2024 15:33

I'm not skinny, just slim, size 10, and do some form of exercise every day.
I tend to eat
Fruit & greek yogurt for breakfast
Sometimes piece of toast & butter or cereal bar
Sandwich with something like ham, cheese, salad, mayo etc for lunch
Piece of fruit
Piece of cake or chocolate bar for a snack
Dinner is steak, homemade chips, salad & mayo or pizza, garlic bread & salad etc
More fruit after if I'm hungry
I also have 4 cups of tea & usually a latte & 1 glass of wine
I always have something sweet in the afternoons but also eat lots of fruit & veg

You must be really tall because how can you consume 2500 calories and be size 6

ginandlemonade23 · 18/09/2024 15:36

I'm a size 8-10 and I eat overnight oats in the morning (filled with various seeds, nuts and either blueberries or other fruit such as peaches).

Lunch is usually a leftover dinner.

Dinner is either salad, soup, chilli, pasta sometimes, wraps

Snack in the morning is usually a banana

5’4 and I’m very active

Fathercrispness · 18/09/2024 15:39

Size 8/10

breakfast: poached egg on toast and large coffee

lunch: snacking on crisps, biscuits and fruit. Today I had 3 packs of walkers cheese and onion, 2 Kit Kats and 2 pears. Plus cups of tea.

dinner: large portion of whatever we’re feeling the kids. Lasagne would be typical.

glass of wine in the evening

I need to get on top of eating healthily so I’m absolutely not giving this as a good example but there you have it! When younger I was quite fat because I ate takeaways and drank a lot of beer. Lost most of it on a health kick with diet and exercise in my early thirties. Stopped exercising and put on loads of weight in pregnancy (twice) but then lost it all breastfeeding and it’s just stayed off.

Mushroo · 18/09/2024 15:41

It’s meaningless because I’m thin not healthy. I felt much better when I was exercising regularly and was a good stone heavier. Right now the word id use is ‘withered’ (I weigh about 7.5 stone).

today:
black coffee
halloumi and mushrooms on toast.
dinner will be shepherds pie and half a Bakewell tart for dessert.

Teentitansgo · 18/09/2024 15:42

Breakfast is coffee and 2 wheatabix with whole milk and dried fruit every day.

Lunch I eat by 12 latest and is pretty much always a cheese or tuna sandwich, crisps and a piece of fruit.

Dinner is early too...around 5pm. Normal meal would be something like homemade pizza, macaroni cheese, spaghetti bolognese or chilli and rice. Big portion of carbs and small portion of the meat if I have it. Bit of extra veg. Mostly drink water.

I go to bed early and watch TV about 8pm. Sometimes I take up a chocolate bar or pastry with me.

I'm tall and a size 8. It's genetics for me. I don't follow any sort of diet.

As above I would say my portions of carbs are bigger than average but other elements average or smaller. I wouldn't say I don't eat enough but I saw something the other day on fbook from people suggesting 10 fish fingers is a 'normal' portion, so who knows!

dawngreen · 18/09/2024 15:43

I don't really get the question, because age plays a part in it. When I was a size 10 I would eat, and drink what ever I wanted. But late 30/40 I started diets etc.
