I work in a team of about 15 people and we all start at the same time every day and always have. Every day starts with a team meeting. 1 or 2 people are 5 - 10 minutes late EVERY day, often with no apology. There's been emails, it's been brought up at meetings but nothing changes. I think it's so inconsiderate.

Do they report into you? If yes then address it. If no then it isn't your concern.

Brefugee · 17/09/2024 19:43

what purpose does the meeting serve? vital stuff to get work done? shut them out and send them home.

Of course it's her concern!

It's wasting her time!

Hernamewaslola22 · 17/09/2024 19:57

I don't get how it isn't my concern. The rest of is have to be there on time. It's so inconsiderate and disrespectful to the rest of the team. It also means they miss important announcements. It's so rude too!!

Depends why they are late I suppose. If that's what time their train gets in it probably can't be helped. If they're just tardy then it's more annoying.

They drive. Not from further away than any of the rest of us, in fact closer than most of us. Also if it was a train..then get an earlier train?

Have they got an agreement with the boss to be 5 - 10 mins late - do they have caring duties either dropping kids at school or looking after elderly relatives ?

Scallopp · 17/09/2024 20:22

Are u their boss? If not, why isn't their boss disciplining them?

Can the meeting start ten minutes later?

KnickerlessParsons · 17/09/2024 20:32

Have you tried suggesting to the meeting organiser that the meeting regularly starts 10-15 mins later so thar no one misses any info? I'd be suggesting thar IN the meeting, when everyone is there.

Angeldelight50 · 17/09/2024 20:43

Some people are just chronically late, annoying but it is what it is. I’d just go ahead and start the meeting, if they miss any important updates that is their concern, not yours.

KerryBay · 17/09/2024 20:51

How long is the meeting?

5-10 minutes to be late on a consistent basis is certainly disrespectful to all of your time, certainly with no apology or acknowledgement for the impact on you all.

BobbyBiscuits · 17/09/2024 20:54

I'd say it reflects poorly upon them to the bosses, so other than that I don't see why it bothers you. Unless work is being affected or it makes your tasks harder/burdens your workload.
Maybe you can be a bit late sometimes, seeing as it seems management allow it.
It isn't really appropriate for you to confront them on timekeeping unless they're your direct reports or you're their senior.

No. And I don't see why it should have to. How hard is it to be on time.

The meeting is about 10 - 15 minutes long

Why should the time of the meeting have to change because people can't be bothered to get there on time? Suspect if the meeting was 5 minutes later they would still be late!

The meeting is about 10 - 15 minutes long

Then being 5-10 minutes late regularly is unacceptable, that is more than half the meeting time and sounds like it’s intended to be a quick sync!

UghFletcher · 17/09/2024 21:20

Are you their manager and aware of accommodations made to them? If not, then it's frustrating but fuck all you can do about it.

IF you're their manager and it's not agreed late starts then bring it up as a performance / business hygiene issue.

Are you the chair of the meeting? Call them out on it and remind them of the start time and raise it with their manager.

Otherwise, not your circus and all that. Moaning on here won't stop it

Merryoldgoat · 17/09/2024 21:28

Hernamewaslola22 · 17/09/2024 21:16

Yes

Ok. So your issue is with 2 specific people?

If you’re not their manager it’s not your business to police. You can raise it with your manager if you want to but if I were your manager I’d tell you to mind your own business.

Fedup369 · 17/09/2024 21:29

I'm 5-10 minutes late for work every Wednesday evening without fail and it's so frustrating to ME! I hate it, but it can't actually be helped and I've spoken to my manager about it, but he's never around anymore and I feel like the section leaders get pissy with me and it's awful, my partner is a tradesman and was working on a building site in our town for a few years, when that ended his next job site is 20-30 minutes drive depending on traffic, he can't leave site till 4:30 and I start at 5. When he worked in our town it was easy, I was actually always early, now it's almost impossible to be on time. I can't drive so I'm sat in the car with the 3 kids ready to go, he pulls up in his van. Gets into the car and we go and I'm still late. I've cried on the journey many times, it's embarrassing,

Fedup369 · 17/09/2024 21:32

And it's a massive arguement starter, when he gets home at 4:58pm and my work is a 10 minute drive away, the frustration makes me cry and then I snap at him. It's just a crap situation but unless I want to pay through the nose for child care I need to keep this job

Merryoldgoat · 17/09/2024 21:33

@Fedup369 what work do you do? Can you not negotiate slightly later hours?

I start later than most other staff where I work but I work later. I know it depends on the type of job which is why I ask but I would feel so stressed that day - awful.
